The fix depends on the remote and the key. On the Google TV Streamer Voice Remote, hold the YouTube button and select the installed YouTube app you want, or configure the star button as a favorite-app shortcut. Google does not document a universal built-in remapper for every branded app key or every Google TV remote. If the key is different, a button-mapping app may work only when your TV supports the required Android Accessibility Service. If the remote controls menus but not TV power or volume, troubleshoot infrared (IR) setup separately.
Identify the remote and the button first
Do not start by changing random settings. Google’s documented app-selection and shortcut controls apply specifically to the Google TV Streamer Voice Remote, the remote Google says can control a Google TV Streamer (4K) or Chromecast with Google TV. Other Google TV remotes may have different keys, firmware, or no equivalent setting.
Write down the exact device model and the label on the key that opens the wrong app. The two supported cases are materially different:
- YouTube key: the remote can choose among installed YouTube apps.
- Star key: the remote can hold a favorite app, the Google Home panel, or an input shortcut.
Google’s instructions do not say that the Netflix key, another branded key, or an arbitrary physical button can be reassigned through the same menus. Use the procedure that matches the key instead of assuming every button is configurable. Fix the YouTube button
This is the directly documented solution when the wrong launch is caused by the YouTube key on a Google TV Streamer Voice Remote. The key selects an installed YouTube app rather than accepting an arbitrary package.
- Turn on the Google TV device and leave it at the Google TV interface.
- Press and hold the YouTube button on the Google TV Streamer Voice Remote. A short press is not the selection gesture.
- Wait for the list of installed YouTube apps to appear on screen.
- Select the app you actually want the key to open. Google gives YouTube, YouTube TV, YouTube Kids, and YouTube Music as examples of choices.
- Press the YouTube key once to confirm that it now opens the selected app.
The selector only covers YouTube apps that are installed on that device. It does not turn the key into a shortcut for an unrelated streaming service, system setting, or sideloaded app outside the supported list. If the hold gesture produces no list, verify that the remote really is the Google TV Streamer Voice Remote and that the relevant YouTube apps are installed and available to the current Google TV profile.
Google’s complete remote description is at support.google.com/googletv/answer/15323195?hl=en. The support page was undated in the accessed content; the instructions identify the compatible Google TV hardware rather than promising the feature on every third-party Google TV remote.

The star button is a separate customizable control on the Google TV Streamer Voice Remote. It can open one favorite TV app, the Google Home panel, or a device input. If it currently opens an unwanted app, edit the star shortcut rather than changing the YouTube setting.

Create or replace an app shortcut
- Press the star button once.
- From the choices shown, select the TV app you want to use as the favorite.
- Choose Create shortcut.
- Press star again to check that the selected app opens.
Edit an existing star shortcut
- Press and hold the star button for one to two seconds.
- When the shortcut editor appears, choose a different favorite app, the Google Home panel, or an available device input.
- Save the displayed choice, then test a normal press.
For an input shortcut, Google also documents this settings route: All Settings > Remotes & Accessories > Set up remote buttons > Customizable button. Menu wording can vary slightly by software version, but the control is the customizable button, not a general-purpose editor for every branded key.
Follow Google’s dedicated instructions at Set up the Google TV Streamer Voice Remote customizable button. The page describes the supported actions; it does not establish that the star key can launch any arbitrary package or that the feature exists on unrelated remotes.
When the key is not YouTube or star
A branded app key that always opens the wrong service may be physically fixed by the remote firmware. The reviewed Google support instructions do not establish a built-in, general-purpose remapper for every dedicated key, every television brand, or every Google TV remote model. First check the manual for the exact remote and confirm whether the key is intended to be configurable.

Button Mapper TV Quick Actions
The Google Play listing for Button Mapper TV Quick Actions says it can remap remote buttons to apps, system settings, and navigation shortcuts on Android TV and Google TV. The listing says the app detects physical button presses through Android Accessibility Service. It was listed as updated September 2, 2026. These are the developer’s listing statements, not an independent compatibility guarantee.

FOBB: TV Remote Button Mapper
The Google Play listing for FOBB: TV Remote Button Mapper describes disabling unwanted shortcuts and an optional Pro feature for mapping buttons to custom apps. It also warns that some televisions may turn off its accessibility service after a restart or standby. The listing was updated June 30, 2026. Treat the feature, payment tier, and compatibility statements as developer claims.

Check compatibility before relying on a mapper
- Confirm that the app’s listing names your operating system or TV platform as supported.
- Install only from the TV’s official app store and read the current listing permissions and update notes.
- Open the television’s Accessibility settings and look for the service the app requests. Labels and locations differ by manufacturer; do not assume that an Android phone’s menu path exists on a TV.
- Enable the service only if you understand that it can observe physical button presses to trigger shortcuts.
- Use the mapper’s button-detection screen to press the problem key. If the app cannot detect a key event, it cannot remap that key.
- Assign the target app and test from the home screen, inside another app, after a restart, and after waking from standby.
- If the service disappears after standby or reboot, re-enable it or remove the mapper and return to the remote’s built-in behavior.
Do not treat a mapper as a guaranteed fix. The two listings describe different features, and either may be affected by the TV manufacturer’s accessibility implementation, remote firmware, or an update. A mapper also cannot correct a physically damaged key or a remote that is sending no detectable signal.

App selection and television-control failures can look similar because both involve the same remote. The symptom that matters is whether the remote can navigate Google TV. If directional buttons and app navigation work but power, volume, or input do not, Google identifies a possible infrared (IR) configuration problem: the remote may not be sending the correct signal to the television’s sensor.
- Open Settings on Google TV.
- Select Remotes and accessories.
- Choose Set up remote buttons.
- Inspect the configured television or other device for the controls that fail.
- Run the on-screen setup or correction for the affected power, volume, or input buttons.
These steps configure TV control; they do not change which streaming app a dedicated app key launches. If the remote cannot navigate Google TV either, troubleshoot pairing, batteries, and the remote connection using Google’s general guide: Troubleshoot the Chromecast or Google TV Voice Remote.

Troubleshoot a failed change
The YouTube app list never appears
- Check that you are holding the YouTube button, not tapping it.
- Confirm the remote is the Google TV Streamer Voice Remote and the device is a Google TV Streamer (4K) or Chromecast with Google TV.
- Install the YouTube apps you expect to choose, then repeat the hold gesture.
- If the key still behaves as before, restart the Google TV device and test again before trying third-party software.
The star shortcut keeps opening the previous app
- Hold star for one to two seconds to enter editing rather than pressing it once.
- Choose Create shortcut after selecting the new favorite; merely highlighting an app is not the documented save action.
- Check All Settings > Remotes & Accessories > Set up remote buttons > Customizable button if the shortcut is an input rather than an app.
The mapper installs but cannot see the button
- Verify that the requested Accessibility Service is enabled on the TV, not only on a paired phone.
- Test another key. If no key is detected, the TV may block the service or the app may not support that remote protocol.
- Review whether the service was disabled after standby or restart, a behavior specifically described in the FOBB listing for some TVs.
- Remove the mapper if it causes duplicate launches, delayed input, or other remote problems.
The app opens correctly only sometimes
- Test from the home screen and from inside another app; some mappers use context-sensitive shortcuts.
- Test after a cold restart and after standby. Accessibility-service persistence can differ between those states.
- Check for a duplicate assignment in the mapper and in the remote’s built-in star shortcut.
- Return to the built-in Google configuration when it supports the key; it has fewer moving parts than an accessibility-based overlay.

When replacing the remote is, and is not, relevant
You do not need a replacement remote merely because the YouTube or star shortcut is set incorrectly; use the documented configuration first. A replacement becomes a separate hardware decision only when the existing remote is damaged, lacks the controls you need, or is not compatible with the built-in feature you want. Google documents the Google TV Streamer Voice Remote for Google TV Streamer (4K) and Chromecast with Google TV, so verify compatibility before buying any remote advertised for a different Google TV product.
