A Plus Code that fails to open is usually malformed, missing the + character, or a short code being used without its town or city. Re-enter the exact code, add locality context to short codes, and verify the returned pin against a known address or dropped pin. If the pin is merely nearby, check the code’s precision: Plus Codes identify areas, not necessarily a building entrance.

Why a Plus Code fails or points somewhere unexpected

Google Plus Codes are Open Location Codes that represent geographic areas. A full global code contains the characters needed to identify a location anywhere; a short local code omits its first four characters and depends on a nearby reference location. That difference explains most “wrong place” reports.

The code was copied with a missing or changed character

The + is part of the format, not decoration. Google says it follows eight characters in a full global code and four characters in a short local code. A missing plus sign, a transposed character, or a character outside the Open Location Code alphabet can prevent decoding or produce an unintended result. Preserve capitalization and punctuation exactly as shown when copying the code. See Google’s Plus Codes support documentation and the Open Location Code specification.

A short code is being used in the wrong locality

A short code deliberately omits its first four characters. Google Maps resolves those missing characters from the user’s current area, so the same short code can identify different places in different cities. A code copied in one city and opened in another can therefore land at the wrong place even when every character is correct. Enter it with a locality, such as H93V+7F, Kolkata, or obtain the full global code. Google compares a standalone short code to an address such as “100 Main Street” without a city.

The returned point is inside the coded area, not at the doorway

Plus Codes describe areas. According to Google, two characters after the plus sign identify an area under about 14 × 14 metres, while three characters after the plus sign identify an area under about 3 × 3 metres. A valid code can consequently place the marker in a yard, parking area, road segment, or the center of a building footprint rather than on its entrance. This is normal precision behavior, not necessarily a bad code.

The device is offline without map data for the region

The Google Maps app can decode a Plus Code offline and drop a pin. However, seeing detailed map information or getting navigation directions offline requires the relevant region to have been downloaded in Offline Maps first.

Fix a Plus Code step by step

1. Re-enter the exact code, including +

  1. Return to the original message, document, sign, or map listing and copy the code again instead of retyping it from memory.
  2. Confirm that the plus sign is present in the expected position: after eight characters for a full global code or after four characters for a short local code.
  3. Look for transcription errors such as swapped characters, omitted characters, added spaces, or punctuation substituted for the plus sign.
  4. Remove only accidental spaces around the code. Do not remove the plus sign or “correct” characters by guesswork.

If the code still fails, compare it with the Open Location Code specification. Not every possible character combination is a valid code.

2. Add a town or city to a short code

When the code has only four characters before the plus sign, treat it as local. In Google Maps, search for it in the form SHORTCODE, Town/City. For example, use H93V+7F, Kolkata rather than H93V+7F when you are not currently in Kolkata.

This locality is essential when the sender and recipient are in different cities. If you can contact the sender, ask for the full global code instead; it removes the dependence on the device’s current location.

3. Use Google’s documented search flow

  1. Desktop: Open Google Maps, select the search box, and paste or type the Plus Code. Add the town or city when using a short code outside the local area.
  2. Mobile: Enter the code in the Google Maps app or in Google Search. No additional app is required for the basic lookup.
  3. Submit the search and wait for the map marker and location details to load. Do not assume that the first text suggestion is correct until the marker is visible.

Google’s full instructions are in Find and share a location using Plus Codes.

4. Regenerate the code from the intended point

If the copied code opens a surprising place, create a new code from a verified point instead of editing the old one.

  1. Search for the intended street address, landmark, or business in Google Maps.
  2. On a phone, long-press the exact spot to drop a pin. On desktop, click the exact point on the map.
  3. Open the location details and find the Plus Code shown for that pin.
  4. Copy that code and share it exactly as displayed. If it is short, include the town or city with it, or share the full global code when available.

Before sending the code, compare the pin with a known address, nearby landmark, or coordinates. This catches a misplaced pin that was dropped on the wrong side of a road or on a neighboring property.

5. Decide whether the apparent error is only a precision issue

Zoom in on the returned marker and compare it with the destination’s actual entrance. A code with two characters after + represents an area under approximately 14 × 14 metres; three characters after + represent an area under approximately 3 × 3 metres. If you need a specific doorway, generate the code by dropping the pin at that doorway and use the longer code shown by Google.

Do not move the marker merely because it is not centered on a building. The code may be valid while identifying the coded area’s center or another point within that area.

6. Prepare offline use correctly

  1. While online, open Google Maps and download the region containing the destination through Offline Maps.
  2. Later, enter the Plus Code in the app without an internet connection.
  3. Use the decoded pin for location reference. Detailed map tiles and turn-by-turn navigation are available offline only where the required region was downloaded.

If no map detail appears offline, reconnect and download the correct surrounding region; decoding alone does not download map data.

Full global codes versus short local codes

Code form Context required Best use Typical failure Fix
Full global code None beyond the code itself Sharing across cities or countries Copied character, missing plus sign, or invalid combination Re-copy exactly and validate the syntax
Short local code Current location or an explicit town/city Local directions and compact sharing Resolves to a similarly coded area near the user Append , Town/City or request the full code

The key distinction is context: a short code is not globally unique by itself. If the recipient will open it outside the sender’s area, include the locality every time.

What to check when the marker is still wrong

  • Compare the city first: A different city usually indicates missing locality context for a short code.
  • Compare the characters second: A single transcription error can produce a different valid location or an error message.
  • Compare the scale third: A marker within a few metres may be correct because the code identifies an area rather than an entrance.
  • Check the source pin: Regenerate the code from a newly dropped pin if the original was copied from an unverified listing or message.
  • Check connectivity: Offline decoding can work without offline map detail or routing unless the region was downloaded in advance.

Using Plus Codes in software and APIs

Applications should treat a Plus Code as structured location input, not as an ordinary street address. The Open Location Code specification notes that some character combinations do not decode to valid coordinates, so validation should happen before geocoding or routing.

Validation and locality handling

  1. Accept the original code without silently removing the plus sign or changing characters.
  2. Validate the code against the Open Location Code rules and reject combinations that cannot decode to coordinates.
  3. For a short code, require a locality or a trusted reference location. Do not infer a city from an unrelated device setting.
  4. Resolve the code to latitude and longitude and log the result, along with the original text and locality used.
  5. Show the resolved point to the user for confirmation before saving it, dispatching a driver, or creating a route.

Google Maps Platform support

Google documents Plus Code support in Places, Place Autocomplete, and Geocoding APIs. Its Routes API documentation also shows a complete 10-character code used as a route location. Review the current Plus Codes technology documentation and Routes API location guidance for the product and request format you are implementing.

For a short code received from a user, retain the locality context alongside the code. Logging only the abbreviated text makes later troubleshooting ambiguous because the same short form can resolve differently in another reference area.

How to share a Plus Code so it opens correctly

  • Prefer the full global code when the recipient may be in another city or country.
  • If sharing a short code, write the town or city immediately after it, for example H93V+7F, Kolkata.
  • Keep the + character and every original character intact.
  • Include a plain-language landmark or address when the destination has multiple entrances.
  • After copying, open the code yourself and confirm that the marker is on the intended property.
  • For offline meetings, tell the recipient to download the area in Offline Maps before losing connectivity.

Why Plus Codes are useful despite these caveats

They provide a compact way to identify places that may not have a conventional street address, including remote roads, temporary sites, and individual points within a large property. Google states that “Plus Codes are free for anyone to use, forever” in its support material. Their reliability depends on preserving the syntax, supplying locality context for short forms, and matching the code’s precision to the task.
