To fix a Google manual action, open the Manual Actions report in Google Search Console, identify every listed issue and affected URL pattern, correct the violation across the full affected scope, and then select Request Review. Explain what the issue was, what you changed, and what the changes accomplished. Google says most reviews take several days or weeks; wait for a decision before submitting another request.

What a Google manual action means

A manual action means a human reviewer determined that some or all of a site’s pages do not comply with Google’s spam policies. Depending on its scope, affected pages may rank lower or be omitted from Google Search results. Searchers may not see a notice explaining why.

The Manual Actions report identifies the action and gives affected-page patterns. Those patterns help you investigate, but they do not prove that every URL matching a pattern is affected. Read the action description and its policy-specific guidance before deciding what to change.

Google’s spam policies cover practices that violate its rules for Search. Its systems can detect policy violations automatically, and human review may result in a manual action when needed. The notice is therefore important: it identifies an issue Google has determined applies to your site, rather than merely a tactic you suspect may be connected to a change in traffic.

A traffic drop is not proof of a manual action

A decline in visits or rankings by itself does not establish that Google has applied a manual action. Check the Manual Actions report for the relevant Search Console property. If it shows no action, there is no manual-action review request to submit; investigate other possible causes of the decline instead.

Google distinguishes manual actions from security problems. The Manual Actions report covers manually detected policy issues. The Security Issues report identifies hacking or behavior that may harm visitors. If your investigation or notice points to a compromise, check the security report as well.

These reports answer different questions. A manual-action notice points to a policy issue that needs remediation and review. A security warning calls for investigating the safety of the site and its visitors. If both kinds of problem are present, deal with each in the appropriate report; resolving one does not establish that the other has been fixed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to confirm the issue and map its scope

  1. Open Google Search Console and select the property for the site that received the notice.
  2. Open the Manual Actions report. Expand each listed action and read its description and affected URL patterns.
  3. Check the Search Console message center and the notification email for the notice and any related details.
  4. Record each separate action, the patterns it names, and the policy issue to investigate. Treat the patterns as clues to scope, not a complete list of affected URLs.
  5. Inspect the matching parts of the site, including relevant pages or templates that may not be obvious from a few sample URLs. Determine where the same issue appears beyond the examples you first find.

There may be more than one action on a property. Each must be addressed; resolving one does not clear the others.

When you map the scope, use the action description to guide the investigation rather than treating the report’s examples as an exhaustive URL inventory. A listed pattern can help you find a page group or site area to check, but Google cautions that not every URL matching a pattern is necessarily affected. Conversely, checking only the first few listed examples may leave the same problem on other pages covered by the issue.

Keep a working list of the action names, affected patterns, pages or templates reviewed, and changes still needed. This is useful both for making sure the full scope is addressed and for accurately explaining the work later. If several actions appear, track them separately so that a successful fix for one policy issue does not distract from an unresolved one.

How to fix the violation before requesting review

The right remedy depends on the action in the report. Use Google’s issue-specific instructions rather than inferring a violation from a traffic pattern. The examples below illustrate how the investigation differs by issue.

User-generated spam

Check forums, comments, profiles, and other areas where visitors can submit content. Remove inappropriate spam and consider measures that prevent or reduce repeat submissions. Review the affected areas broadly: removing a few visible examples does not address spam that remains elsewhere in the relevant scope.

Look beyond a single post or comment if the report points to user-generated spam. The same problem may occur across multiple forum threads, profile pages, or other submission areas. Identify where the content is being added and clean the affected areas; then consider preventive measures so that the same kind of spam does not simply reappear. In your review request, give concrete examples of the bad content removed and, when applicable, good content added.

Hidden text or keyword stuffing

Use URL Inspection to check what Google fetched for affected pages. Look for text hidden through styling or other techniques, as well as unnatural repetition of words. Remove the violation or restyle the content so it is presented appropriately to visitors and Google.

Check the rendered and fetched page rather than relying only on what you see in the normal browser view. Hidden styling or other differences may not be apparent from a quick visual scan. For keyword stuffing, review the actual wording and remove unnatural repetition instead of simply shifting repeated terms into another part of the page. After changes, use URL Inspection to confirm that the fetched content reflects the corrected version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cloaking or sneaky redirects

Compare the page Google fetches with what people see, and identify the code or configuration causing any improper mismatch or redirect. Remove or correct that cause, then check the result for the affected behavior. For a suspected mobile redirect, verify the fix on a smartphone or mobile emulator as well as in your other checks.

A redirect or page mismatch should be investigated as behavior, not just as a URL list. Check what happens for the users or devices implicated by the notice and compare it with the page Google fetches. If a mobile redirect is involved, a desktop check alone is not enough: test on a smartphone or mobile emulator as Google’s guidance specifies. The aim is to verify that the cause has been removed and that the affected behavior no longer occurs.

Other spam-policy issues

Google’s spam policies cover multiple practices, including cloaking and doorway abuse. The report’s wording and linked issue guidance should determine your diagnosis. Do not assume that one example or one generic cleanup method applies to every action.

For example, a doorway-related notice should not be treated as though it were a hidden-text notice simply because both can involve many pages. Start with the named policy and the instructions attached to that action. The examples in this article are ways to think about common investigations, not substitutes for the issue-specific fix Google identifies in the report.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Resolve the full affected scope

Google says fixing only some affected pages will not lead to a partial return to search results. Correct the issue across all affected pages and address every action listed in the report. Before review, make sure Google can access the corrected pages: they should not require a login, sit behind a paywall, or be blocked from crawling by robots.txt or a noindex directive.

  • 【Plug and play】: This mouse and keyboard pad is powered by USB, plug and play, no driver required. One button control light modes. Press one time to change the lighting mode, press twice to change the brightness, press and hold about 3 seconds turn ON/OFF.

Check the changed pages and behavior using the method appropriate to the issue. For example, use URL Inspection to inspect fetched content, and test mobile behavior when the notice concerns sneaky mobile redirects. Do not describe the site as fixed until you have checked the relevant changes.

Accessibility matters because a review depends on Google being able to inspect the corrected pages. A page may look fixed to a site owner while remaining inaccessible to Google because it requires a login, is behind a paywall, or is blocked by robots.txt or noindex. Check those conditions on the relevant pages before submitting. Do not use an access restriction as a substitute for fixing the underlying issue.

Completeness matters just as much. Google says partial cleanup will not earn a partial return to Search results. If a problem spans a page group, a template, or several user-submitted areas, address the whole affected scope rather than requesting review after making a representative sample look compliant. If the report lists multiple actions, resolve all of them before asking Google to review the site.

How to request a review in Search Console

Submit a request only after all listed issues have been corrected and the affected pages are accessible to Google. In the Manual Actions report, select Request Review and provide a factual account of the work. Google says an effective request explains the exact quality issue, the steps taken to fix it, and the outcome of those efforts.

  1. Name the issue. Refer to the policy problem identified in the report. Be precise rather than making a broad claim that the site is now compliant.
  2. Describe the changes. Explain what you removed, corrected, rebuilt, or changed to address the violation, and where the changes apply.
  3. State what you verified. Describe the checks you performed and the result. For broad spam issues, Google’s guidance suggests giving examples of bad content removed and good content added.
  4. Submit once and wait. Send the request through the report after the work is complete. Monitor Search Console and your email for confirmation and the decision.

Keep the explanation specific to work actually done. A promise to clean up later, a general apology, or a claim that the site is fixed without describing the changes does not tell the reviewer how the violation was resolved.

A useful request is an account of remediation, not an argument about the notice. Explain the issue named by Google, the actions taken across the affected scope, and how you checked the result. If you removed specific spam, identify the relevant areas and give examples. If you corrected code or page behavior, describe the correction and the verification you performed. Avoid claiming that every possible issue on the site has been eliminated unless your checks support that claim.

Before submitting, compare your explanation with the action list you made during diagnosis. It should cover each listed action and describe work already completed, not planned work. If the report names more than one issue, explain what you did for each one. The request should help Google understand the changes and their outcomes without relying on vague assurances such as “we fixed everything.”

How long a review takes and what the decision means

Google says most reconsideration reviews take several days or weeks. Link-related cases may take longer than usual, so there is no single turnaround date to rely on. Google confirms receipt and sends a message when the review is complete.

Do not submit another request while the current one is awaiting a decision. If Google determines that the site no longer violates the relevant policy, it will revoke the action. A request is not a guarantee of reinstatement, and a successful review does not promise a particular ranking or amount of traffic.

If Google finds that the site still violates the cited policy, use the report and its issue-specific guidance to find what remains unresolved. Correct the remaining problem across its full scope, check the changes, and follow the current instructions for requesting another review after the pending request has received a decision.

Timing is a range, not a fixed service deadline. Most reviews take several days or weeks, and Google notes that link-related reviews may take longer. Watch Search Console and the email associated with the property for the receipt confirmation and the completed-review message. While a request is pending, submitting another one does not replace the need to wait for that decision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The outcome concerns whether Google considers the cited policy violation resolved. Even if the action is revoked, that is not a promise that rankings or traffic will immediately return to a particular level. If the action remains, treat the decision as a reason to continue diagnosis: revisit the cited issue, check the full affected scope for anything missed, and make further corrections before following the review instructions again.

Special cases that change what the action affects

Structured-data manual actions

A structured-data manual action removes eligibility for rich-result appearances. Google says it does not affect how the page ranks in ordinary Google web search. Check the report and correct any applicable misleading, invisible, or mismatched structured data; do not treat this action as evidence that ordinary rankings were penalized.

This distinction can help focus the investigation. If the notice is specifically about structured data, the reported effect is on eligibility for rich results, not ordinary web ranking. Correct the markup that is misleading, invisible to users, or mismatched with page content as applicable, and use the Manual Actions report to follow the review process. Do not assume that a ranking decline is explained by this action simply because rich-result eligibility was removed.

Site reputation abuse

Google defines site reputation abuse as publishing third-party pages on a site in an attempt to exploit the host’s ranking signals. Third-party content is not automatically a violation, and appropriately marked affiliate links are not site reputation abuse by themselves.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a remedy based on whether it actually addresses the use of the established site’s reputation. Google’s guidance discusses removing the content, rebuilding it as first-party content, moving it to a new domain, or using noindex. Noindexing alone does not automatically clear an action: you still need to respond through Search Console and explain what you did. Moving the content to a subdirectory or subdomain of the same site may not solve the underlying problem and may be viewed as an attempt to circumvent the policy.

Remediation choice What to consider
Remove the third-party pages Does removal eliminate the content that was using the host’s ranking signals?
Rebuild as first-party content Does the resulting content genuinely belong to and serve the site, rather than retaining the same third-party arrangement?
Move to a new domain Does the change separate the content from the established host’s reputation, and does it address the underlying policy concern?
Noindex the content Noindexing does not itself clear the action; explain the change and the steps taken in a review request.
Move within the same site A subdirectory or subdomain may not resolve the issue and can appear to be circumvention.

There is no single relocation or indexing setting that substitutes for resolving the policy concern. Compare options by asking whether the third-party content still benefits from the established host’s ranking signals, whether the content has genuinely become first-party, and whether the change could look like an attempt to evade the policy. In particular, a new location within the same site may leave the underlying relationship unchanged. Noindexing may be part of what you do, but it does not automatically clear the manual action; explain the steps taken in a Search Console request.

There is also a geographic qualification specific to this policy. In an August 28, 2026 update, Google said site-reputation manual actions beginning August 30, 2026 affect Search results shown outside the European Economic Area (EEA). In the EEA, the action’s impact does not apply to users there; the affected section may instead be separated and ranked independently over time. Site owners continue to receive Search Console notifications and can request review. This EEA rule applies to site reputation abuse, not to manual actions generally.

The geographic change does not remove the need to address the action. Google’s August 28, 2026 announcement says that, beginning August 30, the impact of site-reputation manual actions applies to results shown outside the EEA. Within the EEA, the affected section may instead be separated and ranked independently over time. This is a rule for the site-reputation policy, not a general exception for other manual actions; site owners still receive Search Console notifications and may request review.

Common mistakes that delay resolution

  • Assuming a ranking drop is a manual action: confirm that the report contains an action before planning a review request.
  • Fixing only sample URLs: investigate the affected patterns and remove the issue throughout the affected scope.
  • Leaving another action unresolved: check the whole report and address every listed issue.
  • Blocking Google from corrected pages: check for login requirements, paywalls, robots.txt blocks, and noindex directives that prevent review.
  • Using one generic fix for every notice: follow the specific guidance for the issue named in the report.
  • Requesting review before verification: inspect the changed content or behavior first, using appropriate checks such as URL Inspection or a mobile device test.
  • Sending repeated requests while one is pending: wait for Google’s decision before submitting another.
  • Expecting a guaranteed date or ranking: reviews take several days or weeks in most cases, link-related reviews can take longer, and revoking an action does not guarantee a particular search position.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I fix a Google manual action?

Open the Manual Actions report in Search Console, expand each action, and use its description and affected URL patterns to investigate. Follow the issue-specific guidance, correct the violation across the full affected scope, resolve every listed action, and make sure Google can access the corrected pages. Then request review and explain what you changed and how you verified it.

How do I request a review in Search Console?

After the issues are fixed, select Request Review in the Manual Actions report. Explain the exact policy issue, the steps taken, and the outcome. For broad spam issues, include examples of bad content removed and good content added when relevant. Submit one request and wait for Google’s decision.

What should I include in a reconsideration request?

Describe the issue named in the report, the specific changes completed across the affected scope, and the checks you performed and their results. Keep the account factual and specific. Do not rely on a general apology, a promise to fix the site later, or an unsupported claim that everything is resolved.

How long does a reconsideration request take?

Google says most reviews take several days or weeks. Link-related reviews may take longer. Monitor Search Console and your email for the decision, and do not submit another request while the current one is pending.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a structured-data manual action lower ordinary rankings?

Google says a structured-data manual action removes eligibility for rich-result appearances but does not affect how a page ranks in ordinary Google web search. Correct any applicable misleading, invisible, or mismatched structured data and follow the report’s review process.

Is third-party content or an affiliate link automatically site reputation abuse?

No. Google says third-party content alone is not a violation, and appropriately marked affiliate links are not site reputation abuse by themselves. The policy concerns third-party pages published to exploit the host’s ranking signals. Assess whether the arrangement and content actually address that concern; noindexing or moving pages within the same site does not automatically resolve an action.

What if the Manual Actions report is empty but my traffic fell?

A traffic or ranking decline alone does not confirm a manual action. If the relevant property’s Manual Actions report shows none, there is no manual-action review request to submit. Investigate other possible causes of the decline. If hacking or harmful behavior may be involved, check the separate Security Issues report.

The Bottom Line

Confirm the notice in Search Console, follow the guidance for the policy Google identified, and fix every affected area before requesting review. Make the corrected pages accessible, explain the completed work and verification clearly, then wait for Google’s decision; most reviews take several days or weeks, and a revoked action does not guarantee a particular ranking.
