If your steps have stopped updating, a recorded activity is missing, or the weather forecast on your watch is stale, work through the checks below in order. Sync requires a Bluetooth connection between the watch and phone, plus internet access on the phone so Garmin Connect can reach Garmin’s service. Start with connection and service checks; remove and re-pair the watch only if those simpler steps fail.

First, identify what is—and is not—failing

Garmin’s sync troubleshooting guidance covers data such as daily steps and recorded activities, as well as information such as the weather forecast. A watch that is connected to the phone but has not uploaded an activity may need a sync or internet check. A watch that no longer appears connected may need Bluetooth or pairing troubleshooting.

These symptoms do not, by themselves, establish that every Bluetooth-related feature is broken. Follow the checks below and test the specific missing data after each one. Garmin recommends testing as you go rather than immediately resetting a pairing that may still be working.

It helps to separate the connection into two links. Bluetooth connects the watch to the phone; the phone’s Wi-Fi or cellular connection gives Garmin Connect a route to Garmin’s service. Both links are needed for the phone app to receive watch data and pass it along. A working phone-to-internet connection does not prove that the watch is connected, and a watch-to-phone Bluetooth connection alone does not supply the phone’s internet access.

Start by naming the symptom you can observe: steps have not changed in the app, an activity recorded on the watch is absent, weather on the watch is old, the app does not show the watch as connected, or Garmin Connect appears to sync but the expected information is still missing. This is not a diagnosis by itself, but it gives you a result to check after each troubleshooting step. Avoid treating an unrelated Bluetooth feature as proof that activity or weather data has synced.

1. Check Bluetooth, internet access, and Garmin service status

  1. Confirm Bluetooth is on at both ends. Check that Bluetooth is enabled on the phone and on the Garmin device. If the watch has a power mode that disables Bluetooth, see the power-mode check below.
  2. Give the phone internet access. Connect it to Wi-Fi or a working cellular data connection. Bluetooth can link the watch to the phone, but the phone still needs internet access to sync data with Garmin Connect’s service.
  3. Check Garmin’s service status. Look at Garmin Connect’s service status at the time you are troubleshooting. If the service is experiencing an issue, wait and retry before changing a local pairing.
  4. Open Garmin Connect and check the result. With the watch connected, opening the app should start syncing. Garmin identifies the green dot at the top of the Home screen and a sync animation next to the device as visual indicators that syncing is underway. Then confirm that the missing steps, activity, or other data has actually appeared.

A sync indicator means the app is showing syncing activity; it is still worth checking for the specific item you expected. If the app does not show the data after the sync attempt, continue to the next check.

Try these checks in a straightforward order rather than changing several settings at once. First look at the Bluetooth status on both devices, then confirm the phone can access the internet, and then check Garmin Connect’s service status. Open the app after those conditions are in place and look for the watch’s connection and the sync indicators Garmin describes. If one condition was missing, correct it and test the same symptom again before moving on.

If Garmin’s service status shows an interruption, a local pairing reset is unlikely to address that service-side problem. Leave the pairing unchanged, make sure the phone is online, and retry when the status indicates service is available. Service status can change, so check it when you are troubleshooting rather than relying on a previous check.

If the app opens and shows a green dot or a device sync animation, that is useful evidence that a sync attempt is underway, not proof that every expected record has appeared. Look for the specific step count or activity in Garmin Connect. For a stale weather forecast, check whether the information on the watch changes after the phone and watch have synced. If the indicator appears but the item remains absent or old, proceed through the remaining checks.

2. Restart the watch and phone

Restart both devices, then open Garmin Connect and try syncing again. Garmin Support says, “Many issues related to Bluetooth® can be resolved by restarting your phone and Garmin device.” The wording is general troubleshooting guidance, not a guarantee that a restart fixes every sync problem.

  1. Turn the Garmin device off and back on using the controls and instructions for your model.
  2. Restart the smartphone.
  3. After both have started, confirm Bluetooth is enabled, open Garmin Connect, and check whether the watch begins syncing.

Watch menus and restart procedures vary by model, so use the owner’s manual rather than assuming one button sequence applies to every Garmin watch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restarting is a relatively simple check to try before removing a device from the app or the phone’s Bluetooth list. After both devices have restarted, confirm the connection again instead of assuming the previous state has carried over. Then open Garmin Connect and look for the connection and sync indicators, followed by the actual data you were missing.

If a restart does not change anything, note which part still fails. For example, is the watch absent from the app, is it shown as connected but not syncing, or does the app show a sync attempt without the expected activity? That distinction helps you choose the next relevant check and avoid repeating steps that have already produced no change.

3. Check whether a watch power mode has disabled Bluetooth

Some Garmin models offer Battery Saver, Stealth Mode, or Expedition Mode settings that can disable Bluetooth. If your model has one of these modes enabled, turn it off temporarily and retry the sync.

The available modes, their effects, and their menu locations differ across watches. Consult the owner’s manual for your specific model; do not assume a universal settings path. If switching off a mode restores syncing, review that mode’s behavior in the manual before using it again so you know when Bluetooth may be unavailable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This check is relevant only if your model offers a mode that affects Bluetooth. Do not assume that every Garmin watch has all three modes, or that every mode has the same effect on every model. Use the manual to confirm whether a mode is present and what it changes. If none applies to your device, leave the setting alone and continue to the proximity check.

If you do turn a mode off, treat that as a test: open Garmin Connect and check whether the watch reconnects and whether the missing data appears. If the test works, the result points to the mode’s Bluetooth behavior as relevant to your setup. If it does not, restore your preferred settings as appropriate and continue troubleshooting rather than repeatedly toggling modes without checking the outcome.

4. Bring the watch close to the phone

Keep the watch near the phone while checking the connection and retrying sync. Garmin gives an approximate Bluetooth range of 30 feet (10 meters), but that is not a guaranteed working distance: walls, objects, and other wireless signals can reduce the effective range. A short distance between the devices is a useful troubleshooting condition, not proof that range is the cause.

For this test, keep the phone and watch together while you open Garmin Connect and attempt a sync. This removes distance as one possible complication, without requiring you to change pairing or other settings. If the watch reconnects or the sync proceeds nearby, try to keep the devices within a practical range when syncing. If the same symptom remains, proximity alone has not resolved it; move to pairing only after the preceding simple checks have failed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Garmin’s 30-foot (10-meter) figure is an approximation from Garmin Support, not a promise that a watch will connect at that distance in every room or environment. Obstacles and other wireless signals can reduce effective range. A device that fails to sync while close to the phone still needs the other checks in this guide; moving even closer is not a substitute for confirming internet access, service status, Bluetooth settings, and pairing.

5. Remove and add the watch again if simpler checks fail

Resetting the pairing is more disruptive than checking Bluetooth, internet, service status, or restarting. If those steps have not restored syncing, remove or unpair the watch from Garmin Connect and, where applicable, from the phone’s Bluetooth settings. Then add it back through Garmin Connect.

  1. In Garmin Connect, use the app’s device settings to remove the affected Garmin device. The labels and navigation may vary with app version and phone platform.
  2. If the watch remains listed in the phone’s Bluetooth settings, remove or forget it there as applicable. Garmin notes that with Garmin Connect app version 5.21 and newer, removing a device in the app may also remove it from the phone’s Bluetooth menu.
  3. Return to Garmin Connect and use its add-device or pairing flow to pair the watch again.
  4. Follow the app’s prompts, then check the app for the device connection and retry the sync.

Garmin’s detailed pairing guidance does not recommend pairing through the phone’s Bluetooth menu instead of through Garmin Connect. Use the app’s pairing flow. Because wording differs across iOS, Android, Garmin models, and app versions, follow the labels shown on your own devices rather than relying on a menu path written for another setup.

  • 【Plug and play】: This mouse and keyboard pad is powered by USB, plug and play, no driver required. One button control light modes. Press one time to change the lighting mode, press twice to change the brightness, press and hold about 3 seconds turn ON/OFF.

Do not start with this step if Bluetooth, internet access, service status, a restart, or an applicable power mode has not yet been checked. Removing a device changes the pairing state, while the earlier checks are less disruptive and may reveal that the problem is simply a missing internet connection or a service interruption. A pairing reset is a reasonable next test when the simpler checks do not restore the connection or syncing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When you remove the watch, check whether it is still present in the phone’s Bluetooth settings before deciding whether a separate removal there is needed. Garmin Connect version 5.21 and newer may remove it from that list when you remove it in the app, so seeing no remaining phone-side entry can be expected. Conversely, if the entry remains, Garmin’s instructions allow removing or forgetting it there as applicable. The exact screens and wording depend on the platform and app version.

For the re-add step, begin inside Garmin Connect and follow its add-device flow. Garmin does not recommend initiating the pairing from the phone Bluetooth menu instead. If the app cannot find the watch, keep it near the phone, make sure Bluetooth is enabled, and check the relevant permissions in the next section. Do not use a menu path written for a different operating system or watch model as though it must match yours.

After pairing, verify the result in two stages: first confirm that Garmin Connect shows the device as connected or syncing, and then confirm the particular missing steps, activity, or other data is present. A successfully re-added watch is not by itself confirmation that the original sync symptom has been resolved.

6. Check app, watch software, and phone permissions

Update Garmin Connect and the watch

Check that Garmin Connect is current and that the watch has current device software. Garmin identifies Garmin Express on a personal computer as one way to check for and install available watch software updates. An update is maintenance guidance, not a promise that updating will resolve every sync issue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also confirm that the phone meets Garmin Connect’s requirements. The appropriate requirements depend on the phone and software version; use Garmin’s current app and device guidance for your platform rather than assuming one requirement applies to every phone.

App and device software checks are useful after the basic connection checks, but they do not replace them. A current app cannot pass watch data to Garmin Connect if Bluetooth is off, and the phone still needs internet access to reach the service. Likewise, installing an available update should not be treated as proof of a fix: reopen the app and check the same missing data after any update or maintenance step.

Garmin Express on a personal computer is one route Garmin identifies for checking for and installing available watch software. Use it as an update option, not as evidence that every sync issue has a software cause. The availability and process for software maintenance can depend on the device, so follow Garmin’s instructions for the specific watch rather than assuming one update procedure applies to all models.

Review Bluetooth and nearby-device permissions

  • iPhone: Confirm that Garmin Connect has Bluetooth permission. Garmin’s Bluetooth permission instructions explicitly do not apply to iOS 18 or newer, so do not follow older iPhone menu directions as if they were current for those versions. Use the permission controls and Garmin guidance applicable to the installed iOS version.
  • Android 12 or later: Garmin’s pairing guidance identifies Nearby Devices permission as relevant when the app is finding a device during pairing. If the watch will not appear in Garmin Connect’s add-device flow, check that permission for the app.

Permission checks are especially relevant when adding or finding a watch. If an already paired device is present but its data is stale, first confirm the connection and internet checks above rather than assuming a permission setting is the cause.

Permission names and instructions are platform- and version-dependent. In particular, Garmin’s cited iPhone Bluetooth permission page says its instructions do not apply to iOS 18 or newer. Do not copy older navigation directions into a newer iOS version and expect the labels to match. Use guidance that applies to the installed system version. On Android 12 or later, Nearby Devices permission matters when Garmin Connect is searching for a watch during pairing; it is a targeted check if the device is not appearing in the app’s add-device flow.

If the watch is already listed and appears connected, a permission check may not be the first place to focus. Recheck Bluetooth, phone internet, Garmin service status, and the sync result first. If you have just removed the watch and are trying to add it again, the relevant permission becomes more directly applicable because the app needs to find the device.

What to do if the data still does not appear

Use the point of failure to choose the next check instead of repeating the whole sequence at random:

  • The watch is not shown as connected: Recheck Bluetooth on both devices, watch power modes, proximity, and whether the watch can be found through Garmin Connect. If basic checks have failed, use the app’s remove-and-add pairing flow.
  • The watch appears connected, but syncing does not start: Check the phone’s internet connection and Garmin Connect service status, restart both devices, and open the app again.
  • The app indicates a sync, but the expected activity or steps remain missing: Verify the specific data in Garmin Connect after the attempt. Do not treat the visual sync indicator alone as confirmation that the expected item is present.
  • The watch cannot be found during pairing: Keep it near the phone, check relevant Bluetooth or Nearby Devices permissions, and start pairing from Garmin Connect rather than the phone’s Bluetooth menu.

If you are unsure which branch applies, return to the observable symptom rather than changing several settings at once. A watch that is missing from the app points first toward Bluetooth, a power mode, proximity, or pairing. A watch that appears connected but does not upload data makes the phone’s internet access and Garmin’s service status important checks. If the app shows that syncing is underway but the expected record remains absent, check the record itself instead of relying only on the indicator.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After each change, test the same item that first revealed the problem. If steps were stale, check the steps; if an activity was missing, look for that activity; if weather was old, look again at the forecast on the watch after syncing. This makes it easier to tell whether a step helped and prevents a connection indicator from being mistaken for confirmation of the data you wanted.

If these checks do not resolve the problem, consult Garmin Support with the watch model, phone model, operating-system version, Garmin Connect version, and the symptom you observe. Those details help distinguish a device-specific menu or compatibility issue from a connection or service interruption.

When contacting support, describe what you tested and what happened: whether Bluetooth was enabled on both devices, whether the phone was online, whether Garmin’s service status showed an issue, whether the watch appeared connected, and whether Garmin Connect displayed its sync indicators. Include whether you restarted the phone and watch, checked any applicable power mode, tried the app’s pairing flow, and reviewed relevant permissions. This information is more useful than saying only that Bluetooth is broken, because the symptom may be limited to data syncing rather than every Bluetooth-related feature.

There is no reason in these troubleshooting steps to assume you need a replacement watch, cable, phone adapter, or Bluetooth accessory. The recommended sequence is to check the connection and service, restart, review power modes and proximity, re-pair through Garmin Connect if needed, and then check app, software, and permissions. If none resolves the issue, Garmin Support can help with model- and platform-specific guidance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are my Garmin steps not updating in Garmin Connect?

Check that Bluetooth is enabled on both the watch and phone, that the phone has Wi-Fi or cellular internet, and that Garmin Connect’s service is available. Open Garmin Connect with the watch connected and check for the green dot and device sync animation Garmin identifies, then verify that the steps themselves have updated. If not, restart both devices and continue through the troubleshooting steps.

Why is my Garmin activity missing even though the watch is connected?

A Bluetooth connection links the watch to the phone, but the phone also needs internet access to send data to Garmin Connect’s service. Open the app, check Garmin’s service status, and verify the activity itself after a sync attempt. A sync indicator shows syncing activity; it does not confirm that a particular activity has appeared.

Does Garmin Connect need internet to sync my watch?

Yes. The watch uses Bluetooth to connect to the phone, and the phone needs a working Wi-Fi or cellular connection to reach Garmin Connect’s service. Bluetooth by itself does not provide the phone’s internet connection.

Should I pair my Garmin watch from the phone’s Bluetooth settings?

No. Garmin’s detailed pairing guidance recommends pairing through Garmin Connect rather than starting in the phone’s Bluetooth menu. If basic checks fail, remove the device as applicable and use Garmin Connect’s add-device flow. Screens and wording vary by phone platform, app version, and watch model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why can’t Garmin Connect find my watch during pairing?

Keep the watch near the phone, confirm Bluetooth is enabled on both, and start the search from Garmin Connect. On Android 12 or later, Garmin identifies Nearby Devices permission as relevant to finding a device during pairing. Check the permission applicable to your phone and app version.

Can Battery Saver stop Garmin Connect from syncing?

Some Garmin models have Battery Saver, Stealth Mode, or Expedition Mode settings that can disable Bluetooth. Check your model’s owner’s manual to see whether it offers such a mode and what that mode does. If it is enabled, turn it off temporarily and retry syncing.

How far can my Garmin watch be from my phone?

Garmin Support gives an approximate Bluetooth range of 30 feet (10 meters). It is not a guaranteed range: walls, objects, and other wireless signals can reduce effective range. Keep the devices close together while troubleshooting.

Does removing my Garmin device from Connect also remove it from Bluetooth settings?

Garmin notes that in Garmin Connect app version 5.21 and newer, removing a device in the app may also remove it from the phone’s Bluetooth menu. Check the phone list afterward; if the watch remains there, remove or forget it as applicable before adding it again through Garmin Connect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I tell Garmin Support if syncing still fails?

Provide the watch model, phone model, operating-system version, Garmin Connect version, and the exact symptom—such as stale steps, a missing activity, or old weather. Note which checks you tried and whether the watch appeared connected or Garmin Connect showed sync indicators.

The Bottom Line

Start with Bluetooth on both devices, phone internet access, and Garmin Connect’s service status. Restart the phone and watch, check whether a watch power mode disables Bluetooth, and keep the devices close while testing. If simpler checks fail, remove and re-add the watch through Garmin Connect—not the phone’s Bluetooth menu—then review app and device software and platform-specific permissions. After every attempt, verify that the missing steps, activity, or forecast actually appears.
