If a game download is stuck or keeps failing, first check whether the platform is having an outage. If service is available, restart the launcher or console, retry, then narrow the cause by whether the problem affects one game or every download, the exact error, and whether the symptoms point to network or storage. Use the repair steps for your platform rather than deleting game data or repeatedly reinstalling.
Capture the symptom before changing settings
Note the device and platform (for example, Windows with Steam or PS5), game, exact error message or code, and the percentage or file size where the download stops. Also check whether other downloads work. A stopping percentage alone does not establish the cause; the other clues help separate a title-specific problem from a launcher, network, service, or storage issue.
Check whether the platform is having an outage
Check the status page for the store or console network before changing local files. Steam notes that a system-wide network problem can make Steam inaccessible; Epic and PlayStation also direct users to check service status when downloads stall. If an incident is reported, wait for it to clear and retry rather than repeatedly reinstalling.
Restart, retry, and use the relevant platform repair
Steam
Restart Steam and the computer, then retry. If the download still fails, Steam’s update and installation troubleshooting recommends options including clearing the download cache, repairing the library folder, verifying installed files, changing the download region, and trying another drive when available. Choose steps that fit the error rather than treating the list as a mandatory sequence.

- Open Steam > Settings > Downloads and select the option to clear the download cache.
- Sign in again when prompted, then retry the download. Steam says clearing the cache does not affect installed games, but it does require signing in again. See Steam’s cache and installation guidance.
- If an installation or update error persists, use Steam’s library-folder repair option, or verify the installed game’s files if the game is already present.
Epic Games Launcher
For a stuck download, Epic’s stuck-download guidance describes signing out, force-closing Epic tasks, enabling debug logging, and signing in again to retry. For slow downloads, consult its slow-download guidance for checks such as download speed limits, connection, DNS, proxy settings, and allowed domains. Launcher menus can change, so follow the current steps on Epic’s support page.
PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4
Test the console’s network connection and check PSN status first. PlayStation’s downloaded-game troubleshooting points PS5 owners to Safe Mode’s Clear Cache and Rebuild Database for relevant stuck-download cases, while PS4 guidance says to rebuild the database. Use the instructions for your console generation; do not choose a recovery option based on a different model’s menu.

EA app
If you use the EA app, try its App Recovery cache-clear option where applicable. EA’s download and installation troubleshooting also identifies two specific clues: a PC download stopping at 4 GB may indicate that the destination is FAT32, whose file-size limit is 4 GB; a “Create Folder Error” indicates a permissions issue. These clues apply to those symptoms, not every failed download.
Test the network if the symptoms point to a connection problem
If multiple downloads fail, speeds fluctuate, or the problem changes by location or time, test the connection before reinstalling. Steam’s network connectivity guide and Epic’s slow-download guide suggest checking the router, trying Ethernet or another internet connection, and reviewing firewall, DNS, proxy, or interfering-application settings as applicable.

- Try a direct wired connection if your device and router support it, or test another network. This checks whether the Wi-Fi path or current connection contributes to the issue; it will not fix a platform outage, entitlement problem, broken launcher cache, or failing drive.
- Check that a launcher download speed limit is not enabled.
- If you use a firewall, proxy, or managed network, check whether it is blocking the platform. Steam notes that university networks and proxies may block required ports.
- If connection trouble occurs only at certain hours, Steam says that pattern can suggest an ISP-related issue.
Change one setting at a time and retry. That makes it easier to tell whether a change helped.
Check free space, destination drive, and permissions
Confirm there is enough free space for both the game and its update, and that the selected drive is connected and writable. A drive that has disconnected, run out of space, or lost folder permissions can stop an otherwise healthy download. Steam offers a library-folder repair function and recommends trying another drive when installation errors persist. For an already installed game, Verify Integrity of Game Files can detect and repair corrupted files.

Do not delete game data or saved games as a generic troubleshooting step. The support guidance here does not establish that deleting saves is necessary, and recovery or backup options differ by platform.
Choose the next step from the evidence

When the download still will not complete
Keep the error text, stopping point, platform, and results of the status, restart, network, and storage checks together when contacting the platform’s support. That information helps distinguish a service issue from a launcher, connection, or drive problem. The right fix cannot be determined from “stuck” alone; it depends on the platform and the specific error or conditions.
