First determine whether the screen is flickering over time or whether the picture stays steady but looks tinted or washed out. Those are different problems. Check the video connection, then run your Dell monitor’s built-in diagnostics using the instructions for its exact model. If the symptom appears in the diagnostic, contact Dell Support about repair options; if it does not, investigate the computer, cable, or graphics software.
Identify what is changing on the screen
“Flashing color” can describe more than one symptom. Note which one matches what you see:
- The whole image flickers or flashes: the picture changes over time. When it started—and whether it followed a Windows or graphics-driver update—can help identify a software-related cause.
- One color flashes while other parts of the image remain normal: record which color and whether the effect occurs all the time or intermittently.
- The image is steady but tinted or washed out: this is a color-accuracy issue, not necessarily flicker.
If it is safe and practical, check whether the symptom also occurs with another input or source. This can help distinguish a monitor-side symptom from one associated with the connected computer.
Check the input and video connection
- Confirm that the monitor is set to the input connected to your computer.
- Inspect the video cable and make sure it is firmly seated at both the monitor and computer ends. If the cable appears damaged or unreliable, consider a replacement that matches the ports on both devices. A flashing-color symptom alone does not establish that the cable needs replacing. Dell’s display and video troubleshooting guidance includes checking the connection.
Run the Dell monitor’s built-in diagnostics
Use the integrated self-test or built-in diagnostics for your exact monitor model. Find the model’s Dell user guide and follow its instructions; the diagnostic procedure and on-screen controls vary by model. Dell recommends this test for display abnormalities such as flickering and color fade because it helps distinguish a monitor abnormality from a computer or video-card issue. Dell’s monitor diagnostic instructions explain the process.

| The flicker or color abnormality appears in the monitor’s test | Contact Dell Technical Support about repair options. Dell’s instruction is: “If the screen abnormality is present in the integrated self-test mode, contact Dell Technical Support for repair options.” |
| The diagnostic looks normal | Continue with the computer, video connection, and graphics-software checks below. A normal test does not identify which of those is responsible. |
If the symptom is flicker, check Windows graphics software
Restart the graphics driver
On a Windows PC, press Windows+Ctrl+Shift+B to restart the graphics driver. The screen may flash briefly during the restart; Dell says that brief flash is expected. This step is relevant to flicker, not a remedy for every stable color cast. See Dell’s display/video troubleshooting guidance.
Consider rolling back a recently updated driver
If the flicker began after a display-driver update, check whether Windows offers the option to roll back that driver. Dell notes that rolling back may help, but the option may not be available. Avoid assuming an update caused the problem unless the timing fits.

If the picture is steady but the colors look wrong
Check the monitor’s color settings using the controls and instructions for your model. In Windows, search for Calibrate display color and follow the on-screen calibration steps to adjust gamma, brightness, contrast, and color balance. These adjustments address a consistently inaccurate-looking image; they do not establish why a screen is flickering. Dell discusses both types of symptoms in its display and video troubleshooting guidance.

Contact Dell Technical Support about repair options if the abnormality appears in the monitor’s built-in diagnostic. When you contact support, have the monitor’s model or Service Tag available and describe whether the issue is flicker, a single flashing color, or a steady color cast. If the diagnostic looks normal, continue investigating the computer and connection rather than treating the test as proof that a particular component is at fault.
