If your Fire TV Stick is slow, freezing, or showing low-storage messages, start by restarting it and checking for a software update. Next, troubleshoot the affected app or free storage. If videos buffer but menus remain responsive, check Wi-Fi before assuming the Stick itself is at fault. Save a factory reset for problems that persist after these simpler steps.
Start with a restart and software update
A restart is a quick first step for sluggish menus or a temporarily frozen screen. Amazon documents restarting from Settings or by disconnecting power. Menu names vary by model and software version.
- Restart from Settings: Open Settings > My Fire TV > Restart, where available, and follow the on-screen prompts.
- Restart by disconnecting power: Unplug the power cord or adapter, wait at least three seconds, then reconnect it. If the screen is stuck, Amazon’s frozen-screen guidance advises unplugging the device for 60 seconds before reconnecting it.
- Check for an update: Go to Settings > My Fire TV or Device & Software > About > Check for System Update. The exact path depends on the device. An update check is worthwhile, but Amazon does not promise that installing an update will improve performance.

Fix a Fire TV Stick app that freezes or misbehaves
If only one app is freezing, crashing, or behaving inconsistently, try clearing that app’s cache before taking broader action. Amazon says clearing app data and cache can help resolve intermittent app issues or on-screen low-storage messages.

- Open Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications.
- Select the affected app and choose Clear cache.
- Reopen the app and check whether the problem continues.
- If it does, return to the same menu and choose Clear data, if available.
Clearing data is more disruptive than clearing cache: it removes the app’s stored data, so you may need to sign in again or restore your app settings. Check Amazon’s instructions for clearing app data and cache.
Free space when your Fire TV Stick is running out of storage
Uninstall apps you no longer use
Open Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications, choose an app you no longer need, and select the uninstall option. Games and other large downloads you rarely use are practical candidates. Removing an app is different from clearing its cache or data: the app is uninstalled and may need to be downloaded again if you want it back.

Check whether Auto Offload is available
On eligible Fire TV devices, Auto Offload can remove infrequently used apps when storage is low. Amazon says apps may be offloaded after 60 days of non-use; internet access is required, and saved login information and preferences are retained for redownloading. Availability is not universal: Amazon lists exclusions that include older Fire TV and Stick generations. Check your device’s settings and exact model rather than assuming the feature is present.

Check your model before considering storage expansion
Storage capacity and expansion options vary across Fire TV generations. Amazon’s model specifications list 8 GB of total storage for several models and 4.5 GB available for internal storage on a number of older models; these figures do not describe every Stick. The same model differences matter when considering an SD card, USB drive, or other expansion accessory. Check the specification for your exact device before buying or connecting storage equipment.

Tell slow menus apart from video buffering
Slow navigation, delayed app launches, and lag across the home screen point toward device or app troubleshooting. Buffering during playback can instead be caused by Wi-Fi or network conditions, so buffering by itself does not establish that the Stick is slow or failing.
- Check the Fire TV’s network status and reconnect to Wi-Fi if needed.
- Restart the Fire TV and your modem or router.
- If the signal is weak, move the Fire TV and router closer together where practical.

Check power and HDMI if the Stick freezes or will not start
A device that freezes at startup, shows no picture, or will not power on may have a connection or power issue rather than a storage problem. Amazon advises using the supplied power cable and adapter, checking the TV’s selected input and HDMI connection, and connecting the Stick directly to the TV instead of through an HDMI hub. If the original cable or adapter is lost, Amazon recommends compatible Amazon-branded replacement equipment.
- Confirm the power cable and adapter are connected securely and use the supplied equipment if you still have it.
- Check that the TV is set to the HDMI input used by the Stick and that the HDMI connection is secure.
- Try connecting the Stick directly to the TV if it is currently plugged into an HDMI hub.
- Power cycle the device by disconnecting and reconnecting power.
These checks address power, startup, and connection symptoms; they are not a general fix for low storage or slow menus. See Amazon’s frozen-screen and startup guidance.
Use a factory reset only as a last resort
If the Stick still has persistent problems after restarting, updating, addressing app issues, and checking power and network connections, a factory reset is an option. It removes account information and downloaded content, including in-app purchases, so you will need to set the device up again and restore content where possible.
