If your Fire TV shows a black screen after an update, first check the TV input, HDMI connection, and power, then restart the device. If the Fire TV menus work but one app will not open, troubleshoot that app before resetting the whole device. The right restart and recovery steps depend on whether you have a Fire TV Stick or a Fire TV Smart TV.
Check the input, HDMI connection, and power first
A black screen does not by itself show that an update caused the problem. Start with the parts of the setup that can prevent the Fire TV picture from reaching the screen.
- Confirm the television is on and select the HDMI input used by your Fire TV Stick. If the TV says “No signal,” check the selected input and HDMI connection first.
- If the Stick is connected through an HDMI hub or adapter, connect it directly to the TV temporarily to test the connection.
- Check that the Fire TV device is receiving power. Use the supplied cable and adapter. Amazon advises replacing a lost Fire TV power cable or adapter with Amazon-branded equipment to ensure compatibility: Amazon Fire TV device frozen-screen troubleshooting. This is a compatibility recommendation, not proof that a different adapter caused the black screen. For Fire TV Stick 4K Select, Amazon says to use the adapter rather than connect the USB cable directly to the TV: Fire TV Stick 4K Select setup.
Restart the right kind of Fire TV
Identify the device before using a button sequence: a Fire TV Stick is a separate HDMI device with an external power cable, while a Fire TV Smart TV is the television itself. Their restart and recovery procedures are not interchangeable.

After restarting, allow the device to boot and check whether the logo, home screen, or picture returns. If it remains black, note whether the television reports “No signal,” whether a Fire TV logo appears, and whether menus ever load; those observations help distinguish an HDMI or power issue from a frozen device.

If Fire TV menus appear, check updates and restart in Settings
If the home screen is visible, use the on-screen controls rather than immediately resetting the device. On Fire TV Smart TVs, Amazon lists this system-update path: Settings > My Fire TV or Device & Software > About > Check for System Update. Menu names can vary by model. To restart from Settings, use Settings > My Fire TV or Device & Software > Restart: Amazon Fire TV Smart TV picture troubleshooting.
If all apps fail while menus still work, check the internet connection and system update, then restart. A black screen after an update alone does not establish whether the cause is the update, power, HDMI, network, or an app or service issue.

If only one app will not open, troubleshoot that app
Try another app to see whether the problem is limited to one. If other apps work, use the affected app’s settings before considering a device-wide reset.

- Open the installed-app settings, select the affected app, and clear its cache. If that does not help, clear its data. The exact menu labels can vary by model; clearing data may remove that app’s local settings or require you to sign in again.
- Open the Appstore and check whether an update is available for the app. Amazon’s Appstore shows an update option when one is available.
- Open the app again and test it. Amazon’s Silk support guidance also recommends clearing app data or cache and restarting: Silk app troubleshooting.
Use factory reset only as a last resort
A factory reset returns a Fire TV device to setup and erases its configuration. Try the input, power, restart, system-update, and app-specific steps first. If you still need a reset, confirm your exact model and follow its official instructions; a Fire TV Smart TV’s recovery procedure is not a universal Fire TV Stick procedure.

Amazon documents an in-menu factory reset and a remote shortcut for Fire TV Smart TVs. If the remote shortcut cannot be used, its support instructions describe recovery mode using the TV’s physical power button: Fire TV Smart TV reset and picture instructions. If there is no picture even during startup, or the device does not respond after you check power and connection, use the support path for the exact model. The symptom alone does not identify a hardware failure or confirm that an update caused the problem.
