If your Android phone says an SD card is damaged, corrupted, or unreadable, protect any files you still need before trying to make the card usable again. Do not accept a format prompt unless the data is backed up or you are willing to lose it: Google Android Help warns that formatting permanently deletes card data. Phone-only checks can identify some setup problems, but they cannot reliably recover files from a card that remains unreadable or distinguish every card failure from a phone-slot problem.
First decide whether the files matter
Photos, videos, and documents that are not backed up should take priority over getting the card working again. Formatting is a destructive usability step, not a data-recovery method. Google Android Help says, “If you format your SD card, data will be permanently deleted.” Samsung also warns that formatting erases the card’s data.
If the files are important, do not format the card or keep experimenting with it. The official guidance cited here does not establish a reliable phone-only method for recovering files from an unreadable card. Preserving access to the card and pursuing a recovery option with suitable access to it is safer than risking further data loss.

Try reversible checks on the phone
Remove, inspect, and reseat the card
If your phone has a removable card tray, follow the phone’s manual; power the phone off before removing the card if the manual directs you to. Check for visible damage or debris, then reinsert the card carefully so it sits correctly. Samsung recommends checking the card’s condition and seating, and removing and reinserting it.

If the card is visibly damaged and the files matter, stop handling it and avoid formatting. Consider specialist help for the files; if the data is not needed, replacement may be more practical.
Restart and check Settings
Restart the phone, then open Settings and look for the storage area to see whether the card appears. The exact menu names differ by phone model and software version. Samsung UK recommends restarting as part of troubleshooting.

If Settings detects the card but a file app does not, the card may be configured as internal storage rather than portable storage. Google Files Help identifies this as one possible reason a card recognized in Settings is not visible in Files by Google.
Check whether the card is portable or internal storage
Android supports two SD-card modes. Portable storage is intended to be moved between devices. Internal, also called adoptable, storage is configured for use with the phone. Samsung says adoptable-storage cards are encrypted and cannot be removed for use elsewhere without resetting the phone and formatting the card. Do not casually move or reformat a card that may be configured as internal storage.

Google’s Get started with an SD card guide explains the portable and internal storage distinction. If you are unsure which mode applies, use the phone’s storage settings and manufacturer guidance before taking an action that could erase data.
Choose the next step based on what you see

Format only if you accept losing the contents
Formatting may address some card errors, but it permanently deletes the card’s files; it does not recover them. Back up anything you want to keep first. Proceed only if the files are backed up or no longer needed.

Samsung gives this example path: Settings → Device care → Storage → More options → Advanced → SD card → Format. Menus vary by phone, so the option may be elsewhere or unavailable on your model. Android Help likewise advises backing up files before formatting.

If the card is still not recognized
Samsung recommends testing a card with another device. That check requires another compatible device, so it may not be possible under a no-computer constraint. Without another device, phone-only troubleshooting cannot conclusively separate a failed card from a phone slot or compatibility issue.

Samsung says a card that remains unrecognized may be damaged and suggests trying a new one. Before replacing it, check that your phone supports removable SD cards and that the card type and capacity are compatible with your specific model. Not every Android phone has an SD-card slot, and support varies by device.
If important files remain inaccessible, do not treat an app that promises to “repair” the card as a guaranteed fix: the official guidance here does not promise phone-app recovery for a physically damaged or unreadable card.
