If a CD/DVD drive has disappeared from File Explorer, first check whether Windows still lists it in Device Manager, then check whether the computer’s BIOS/UEFI detects it. A drive listed in firmware but missing or flagged in Windows often needs a driver or configuration fix; an internal drive missing from BIOS points instead to a connection or hardware problem.
Check whether Windows sees the drive

Open File Explorer and check whether the drive appears under This PC.

Open Device Manager: right-click Start and choose Device Manager, then expand DVD/CD-ROM drives.

Note whether the drive is listed and whether it has a yellow warning icon. Open its properties to view any device-status code.

A yellow warning icon suggests a driver or configuration issue. Microsoft identifies codes 19, 31, 32, 39, and 41 among the errors that can accompany a missing CD/DVD drive; they indicate registry configuration, service, or driver problems. Check BIOS or UEFI detection
Restart the computer and open its BIOS/UEFI or computer-setup screen using the key shown during startup or in the computer maker’s instructions. Look for the internal optical drive in the listed storage or device information. The exact menu and key vary by manufacturer.

Drive appears in BIOS/UEFI: The firmware can see the hardware, so continue with Windows troubleshooting.

Drive does not appear: Windows driver steps are unlikely to resolve the underlying detection problem. If you are comfortable and the computer’s service instructions allow it, check that the drive’s connection is secure. Otherwise, contact the computer manufacturer or arrange hardware service. Uninstall the device and let Windows reinstall it

In Device Manager, expand DVD/CD-ROM drives.

Right-click the affected drive and choose Uninstall device. Confirm if prompted.

Restart Windows. The operating system should detect the drive and reinstall its standard driver.

After restart, check File Explorer and Device Manager again.

Microsoft and Dell both recommend uninstalling the optical-drive device and restarting when Windows detects a driver or configuration problem. If the drive is not listed in Device Manager at all, check BIOS/UEFI and the physical connection rather than assuming that uninstalling a listed device will fix it.
Update the computer’s chipset software
If the drive remains undetected in Windows but is visible in BIOS/UEFI, check the computer manufacturer’s support page for chipset drivers that match your exact computer model and Windows version. Microsoft also recommends checking chipset drivers. Use the computer or drive manufacturer’s support site; avoid third-party driver-download sites.

Isolate the disc, connection, or drive

Try a known-good disc of a format the drive supports. One unreadable disc does not establish that the drive itself has failed.

For an external USB drive, reconnect it and try another available USB port. If possible, test it on another compatible computer.

For an internal drive, follow the computer maker’s service guidance before opening the case or handling its connections.

These checks help distinguish a bad disc or USB connection from a drive problem. If the drive still is not detected across appropriate checks, hardware service or replacement may be necessary.
Decide whether to repair or replace the drive
Use the detection result to choose the next step:

Before choosing an external USB CD/DVD drive, confirm compatibility with your computer and operating system, supported formats, whether it reads or writes discs, and its power requirements. If you need Blu-ray, make sure the drive explicitly supports it; CD/DVD capability alone does not imply Blu-ray support.
