A TV with a visibly cracked LCD, LED, QLED, Mini-LED, or OLED panel cannot be repaired with toothpaste, glue, heat, a reset, or a software update. The realistic repair is a complete panel replacement—and on many TVs, that costs nearly as much as buying a replacement set.
Before paying for a repair, confirm that the panel is actually damaged. Lines, flickering, and a black picture can also come from an HDMI cable, source device, signal, or internal board. This guide shows how to identify the fault, protect yourself and the TV, check coverage, and decide whether panel replacement makes financial sense.
1. Turn the TV off and make the area safe
- Turn the TV off using its power button or remote.
- Unplug the power cord from the wall.
- Disconnect HDMI, antenna, Ethernet, USB, and other cables.
- Do not press, rub, bend, or flex the damaged area.
- Keep children and pets away if glass is loose or falling.
Do not spray cleaner directly onto the display. If the screen is dirty, apply a small amount of suitable cleaner to a microfiber cloth—not to the TV—and only clean an undamaged screen after it is unplugged. Sony also warns against removing the actual surface layer of an OLED or LCD display. It may look like protective film, but it can be part of the functional panel. Remove film only when your model has a clearly marked pull tab or the manufacturer specifically instructs you to do so.
If the panel is shedding fragments, do not peel it away or tape over the display as a supposed repair. Keep the TV unplugged and arrange professional handling.

2. Confirm that the panel—not the cable or source—is broken
A picture defect that appears only while using a cable box, game console, or streaming stick is not necessarily a broken screen. The quickest useful test is the TV’s own menu or built-in picture test.
Samsung
On many Samsung models from 2022 onward, open:

On earlier models, the path is commonly:

Many 2024 and newer LG OLED TVs use Settings → All Settings → Support → Screen Self-Diagnosis. Menu names can differ by model and software version. If the test picture is normal, investigate the broadcast, HDMI cable, set-top box, console, or other external device.

On supported recent models, try:
Settings → System → About → Status and diagnostics → Picture/Sound test
Sony also documents similar paths such as Status & Diagnostics → Picture/Sound Symptoms or Picture/Sound test. If the problem is limited to one HDMI input or channel but does not appear in the TV’s menus or test image, the panel is less likely to be the cause.

Do not deliberately press the screen to see whether the image changes. Pressure can turn a partial failure into a permanently damaged panel.
4. Check warranty, delivery damage, and insurance
Standard TV warranties generally do not cover damage caused by impact, dropping, liquid, or improper handling. For example, Sony excludes physical damage from its standard TV warranty, while LG distinguishes between damage discovered when the TV is first removed from its box and later accidental damage.

- Photograph the crack before moving the TV.
- Photograph the shipping carton, corners, labels, and internal packing.
- Keep the packaging until the retailer gives you instructions.
- Contact the retailer immediately and follow its damage-report deadline.
Also check a retailer protection plan, credit-card purchase protection, homeowner’s or renter’s insurance, and any accidental-damage plan. Coverage may be more useful than a manufacturer warranty for a cracked screen. Do not authorize a paid repair until you know whether an insurer or retailer requires an inspection first.

Prepare this information for an authorized service center or reputable TV repair provider:
- Brand and complete model number
- Screen size and serial number
- Purchase date
- Clear photos of the front and rear labels
- Photos of the damage
- Whether the TV powers on
- Whether sound still works
- Whether the fault appears in the built-in picture test
Ask for a written estimate with each cost separated:
- Replacement panel
- Labor
- Freight or shipping
- Pickup and delivery
- Diagnostic fee
- Repair warranty
- What happens if the replacement panel arrives damaged
- Whether the panel is new, refurbished, or removed from a donor TV
Do not order a panel based only on “55-inch” or “65-inch.” TVs with the same advertised size—and sometimes even the same model family—can use different panel assemblies or revisions. The exact model number and a confirmed compatible part are essential.
6. Decide whether replacement is worthwhile
Panel replacement can make sense when the TV is recent, premium, unusually large, covered by accidental-damage protection, or difficult to replace with an equivalent display. It is usually a poor value when the set is older or entry-level, the panel is hard to source, freight is expensive, or the total quote approaches the price of a new TV.

Samsung’s TV support guidance specifically notes that a new TV may be more economical than a new screen and repair labor. Compare the complete repair estimate—not just the panel’s listed price—with the price of a replacement TV that has similar size, panel technology, refresh rate, and features.
What will not repair a cracked TV screen?
- Toothpaste, petroleum jelly, resin, or screen polish
- A hair dryer or other heat source
- Pressing or massaging the crack
- Tape over the damaged area
- A factory reset or software update
- An HDMI cable, when the crack appears in the TV’s own menus
- Replacing the main board or T-Con board without proving the panel is good
Tape may contain a loose fragment temporarily, but it does not restore damaged pixels or the internal display layers. A reset can correct a software or signal fault; it cannot repair impact damage.
Can you replace the panel yourself?
DIY panel replacement is not a simple screen swap. It usually involves removing the rear cover, disconnecting fragile ribbon cables, lifting a large panel without flexing it, transferring diffuser and frame components, and reassembling the display without dust or pressure points.
Large panels can crack from a small amount of bending, and the TV may contain electrical hazards even after it has been unplugged. If you proceed despite the risks, use the exact service documentation for the model, work on a large clean surface with help lifting the panel, and never power the TV while the panel is partly disconnected. For most owners, a qualified technician—or replacement of the entire TV—is the safer option.

Can a cracked TV screen be repaired?
The actual LCD, LED, QLED, Mini-LED, or OLED panel cannot be repaired with glue, polish, heat, or software. It must be replaced as a complete panel. Because parts and labor can be expensive, replacing the TV is often more economical.

How can I tell whether the problem is the screen or an HDMI cable?
Open the TV’s built-in picture test or display its own menus. If the lines or distortion also appear there, the TV has an internal fault. If the test image is normal and the defect occurs only on one HDMI source, try another cable, input, or source device.
Does a TV warranty cover a cracked screen?
Usually not. Standard warranties commonly exclude impact, drops, liquid, and other physical damage. Check the retailer’s delivery-damage policy, an accidental-damage plan, credit-card protection, and homeowner’s or renter’s insurance.
Is it worth replacing a broken TV panel?
Get a written model-specific estimate first. Replacement is more likely to make sense for a recent premium or specialty TV, especially with insurance coverage. For an older or entry-level TV, or when the quote approaches the price of a comparable new set, replacement is normally the better value.
