How to Fish time to beat depends on what you mean by “beat.” Reaching the story ending is a different goal from earning every achievement, and a reported sub-hour Bean run is a practiced challenge—not a realistic promise for a first playthrough. No reliable first-run average or fixed 100% completion time is established by the available guides.
What counts as beating How to Fish?
For a story clear, the finish line is the ending and credits. A guide by NerdsChalk describes a five-island progression that ends with the lava whale: return the Whale Fin to the scientist to get the RHIB keys, start the RHIB, and reach the credits. Treat those objective names and steps as guide-reported; the current in-game wording may differ.
Full completion is a separate target. How to Fish Game Wiki reported 28 Steam achievements for Patch 1.0.10, verified August 28, 2026. That is a secondary guide’s count, not an independently checked official achievement list. The set includes story progress as well as optional challenges and cleanup.

There is no trustworthy, established average for a first playthrough in the sources reviewed. The estimates available are guide claims rather than results from a measured player sample, and actual time depends on navigation, upgrades, quest hand-ins, and boss retries.

One Steam Community guide gives a broad expectation of 5–20 hours, but it is marked outdated, reflects version 1.0.4, and warns that the Bean route was affected by a later patch. How-to-Fish.net likewise notes factors that make first-run time vary, but does not establish a definitive average. Read the older range as one guide’s rough expectation, not a current guarantee.
How fast can a practiced run be?
Bean is described in community route guides as a finish-within-one-hour challenge. That makes under an hour a route goal for a practiced run, not a baseline for new players. NerdsChalk also reports a 28-minute, 33-second duo clear, but the cited passage does not establish a verified leaderboard record, category rules, or game version. It should not be treated as a general benchmark or proof that co-op is faster.

Route validity is patch-sensitive. The How to Fish Wiki speedrun page, dated August 28, 2026, says patch 1.0.5 removed a shortcut that allowed travel to locked islands. Its route guidance is a fan-resource snapshot, not developer confirmation, and the latest official build and exact current route validity were not confirmed.

How to approach a faster run
The speedrun page’s general strategy is to follow the five-island chain, skip optional stops and purchases where possible, and focus on required bosses. It recommends learning the route before attempting Bean. These are community-guide recommendations, not independently tested results.

- Separate practice from your normal save. Charlie Pork’s Steam guide says, “Keep two save files. One for your normal playthrough, one dedicated to the Bean speedrun.” The guide is marked outdated, refers to version 1.0.4, and notes that the route changed with patch 1.0.5.
- Learn the current island sequence. Do not rely on the old locked-island shortcut; the speedrun page says it was removed in patch 1.0.5.
- Keep the goal narrow. For a speed attempt, prioritize required bosses and objectives rather than collection progress or optional activities.
- Recheck route details in your build. Purchases, prices, and tactics can change. The speedrun page itself flags disagreement over a compensator price and says prices may vary by patch or region, so its route-specific shopping advice should not be treated as settled fact.
What makes 100% completion take longer?
Achievement cleanup extends beyond the story’s critical path. The reported achievement set includes optional challenges, collection progress, upgrades, side activities, catch variants, and outcomes with random elements. Because those tasks differ from simply reaching the ending—and some depend on chance—the guides reviewed do not support a dependable total time for 100% completion.
Use the current in-game achievement list as your checklist rather than assuming every third-party guide reflects the latest conditions. The 28-achievement figure is specifically the How to Fish Game Wiki’s Patch 1.0.10 reporting from August 28, 2026.
