Your Steam64 ID—formally called SteamID64—is the 17-digit number that uniquely identifies your Steam account. To find it, open your Steam Community Profile, choose Edit Profile, and inspect the Custom URL area. A profile without a custom URL displays a numeric /profiles/ address; if you use a custom /id/ address, clear the custom-URL text so Steam reveals the numeric profile URL. Copy every digit after /profiles/ and paste that value when an admin list or whitelist asks for SteamID64.
The receiving server determines the required format. SteamID3 and Steam Hex are different representations, so do not substitute either one unless the field explicitly requests it.
What a Steam64 ID is—and why a server asks for it
Steam Support defines SteamID as a unique identifier for a specific Steam account. The commonly used 64-bit form, SteamID64, is a 17-digit number. Game servers, moderation panels and whitelist tools use that number to associate permissions with the account rather than with a name a player can edit.
Your visible profile name is not a reliable access-control key. You can change that name in Profile Settings, while the account identifier remains tied to the account. Steam Support also states that “Your SteamID and Steam Account Name can not be changed, even by Steam Support staff members.” For an allow-list, ban list or administrator list, that stability is the reason an ID is preferred over a display name.

Find SteamID64 in Steam’s profile editor
Use Steam’s own Community Profile interface; no game has to be running. The labels below describe the desktop or web profile editor. Steam can change its visual layout, but the relevant controls are the profile editor and its Custom URL section.
- Open your Steam Community Profile. Sign in to the Steam account whose identifier you need, then open that account’s Community Profile.
- Select Edit Profile. This opens the profile settings page rather than the public profile view.
- Locate the Custom URL area. Inspect the profile URL shown in or around that field. If you have never set a custom Community URL, Steam displays a numeric URL containing your 64-bit ID.
- Handle the custom-URL case. If the field contains a vanity name, remove the text in the Custom URL box. Steam’s profile editor then reveals the numeric profile URL containing the 64-bit ID. Follow the editor’s save or confirmation control if one is shown.
- Copy the numeric value. In the resulting address, copy only the digits after
/profiles/. That complete 17-digit value is your SteamID64.
Copying from the address itself is safer than trying to infer an ID from a player name. Keep the slash and the word profiles out of the value you submit unless the receiving tool specifically asks for the complete URL.
Recognize the numeric profile URL
A Steam Community profile can use either a numeric path or a vanity path. The path tells you whether the account ID is already visible.

The 17-digit number is the identifier; the profile’s display name, avatar and vanity text are presentation settings. A name that looks similar to another player’s name cannot substitute for the account number.

When a custom /id/ URL hides the number
A URL such as steamcommunity.com/id/yourname is a human-readable alias, not the SteamID64 itself. Opening that address in a browser may leave you looking at the correct profile without showing the underlying number in the address bar. Use one of these two approaches:
Expose it in Steam
- Open the profile represented by the vanity URL.
- Choose Edit Profile.
- Scroll to Custom URL.
- Remove the text from the Custom URL box so Steam displays the numeric profile URL.
- Copy the digits following
/profiles/.
Resolve the vanity name externally
A resolver can translate a vanity URL into the account’s numeric /profiles/ URL. ValvePython’s documentation demonstrates both direct numeric extraction and vanity-URL resolution. Whichever resolver you use, verify that the returned profile is the intended account before copying the number, and submit only the numeric SteamID64 when the admin field asks for that format.
Choose the identifier format the whitelist actually requests
“Steam ID” is used casually for several representations. They are not interchangeable strings. Read the field label, help text or server documentation before pasting a value.

If the documentation says only “Steam ID,” look for a format example or a separate selector. A 17-digit value is the normal choice when the system says SteamID64. Do not paste the complete profile URL, a vanity name or a SteamID3 value into a SteamID64 field.

Enter the ID in an admin list or whitelist
After copying the number, use this verification sequence before saving the entry:
- Read the field label. Confirm that it requests SteamID64 rather than SteamID3, Steam Hex or a player name.
- Paste the value as plain digits. The entry should contain the complete 17-digit number, with no spaces, quotation marks, brackets, slash, hyphens or other punctuation.
- Check the first and last digits. Compare the beginning and end of the pasted value with the number in the numeric profile URL. A missing leading or trailing digit changes the account being identified.
- Save or apply the list. Use the panel’s save, update or reload control. Some server tools do not apply list changes until their configuration is reloaded; follow that tool’s own instruction rather than changing the identifier format.
- Test with the intended account. Connect using the account whose profile you inspected. If access is denied, recheck the field type and the exact copied string before changing permissions.
Keep one clean, unmodified copy of the numeric value in your administrative notes so you can compare it with the panel entry later. Do not “correct” a value by replacing it with the player’s current display name.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
The address starts with /id/, not /profiles/
That is a vanity URL. Return to Edit Profile, clear the Custom URL field and use the numeric profile URL that Steam reveals. If you use a resolver instead, confirm that it resolves the same account before submitting the result.
The copied value is not 17 digits
Reopen the profile editor and copy the entire run of digits after /profiles/. Do not count the slashes, the word profiles or any text before the number. A shorter value usually means part of the number was omitted or that a different identifier format was copied.

The admin panel rejects the entry
First verify the panel’s requested format. A SteamID3 value, a Steam Hex value and a SteamID64 value can all identify the same account while having different text forms. If the panel specifically requests SteamID64, paste only the 17 digits and remove spaces or punctuation.
The whitelist accepts the entry but the player still cannot join
Compare the saved entry character by character with the numeric profile URL. Check that you used the profile for the account attempting to connect, not another account opened from a search result or a shared computer. Then confirm that the server has applied the updated list according to its own reload procedure.
The player changed their profile name
Use the stored numeric ID, not the new display name. The name shown to other players is editable; the SteamID and Steam Account Name are account identifiers that Steam Support says cannot be changed.
The field asks for a name instead of an ID
Do not force a SteamID64 into a name field. Some tools maintain separate fields for a player name and a Steam identifier. Use the identifier field when available, and follow the server’s documentation if it intentionally uses a different login or naming scheme.

SteamID64 versus the profile URL
The URL is a way to locate the value, not the value itself. For example, in steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198#########, the SteamID64 is the 17-digit numeric segment. The steamcommunity.com domain, the /profiles/ path and any trailing characters are not part of the ID.
This distinction matters when a panel validates input. A field that expects SteamID64 generally rejects a full URL because it is looking for decimal digits only. Conversely, a browser address bar needs the complete URL structure to open the profile.
A reliable workflow for administrators
When collecting IDs from several players, use the same process for every account to avoid mixing formats:
- Ask each player for the numeric SteamID64, not a display name or vanity URL.
- Have the player obtain it from Edit Profile and the Custom URL area, or provide the numeric
/profiles/URL for verification. - Record the 17-digit value exactly as supplied, without adding labels or punctuation inside the value.
- Place it only in a field documented as SteamID64. Keep SteamID3 or Steam Hex values in separate columns if the server uses those formats for other functions.
- After saving, compare the panel’s stored value with the source number and apply the server’s required reload or update action.
This workflow separates identity lookup from permission management: Steam supplies the account identifier, while the server administrator decides which list receives it.
