Start at Vote.gov and select your state or territory to register, update your information, check your registration status, or find registration instructions and deadlines. To contact an election office or get broader state and local voting help, use USAGov’s election-office directory. Confirm deadlines and procedures with the linked state or local election authority, because the rules vary by jurisdiction.
Choose the official route that fits your task
First identify the state or territory where you live and what you need to do. These federal government sites are useful starting points; for current operational details, follow their links to your state or local election authority.
| Your need | Start here | What it helps you do |
|---|---|---|
| Register, update your registration, check your status, or find registration instructions | Vote.gov | Select a state or territory to reach its voter-registration information and common registration tasks. |
| Find an election office, contact information, or broader local voting help | USAGov’s state and local election-office directory | Find links to official state and territory election authorities; local offices can help with registration and voting questions. |
| Cross-check state-linked summaries and resources | The U.S. Election Assistance Commission’s “Register And Vote in Your State” page | Browse election information by state, then verify current details and timelines with the linked state or local source. |
How to check or update your registration
- Go to Vote.gov’s registration page and choose your state or territory.
- Follow the state-specific link for the task you need: registering, checking your registration status, or updating your information.
- Review the state authority’s instructions for your situation and the election you plan to vote in. A status check can help confirm your name, address, political party, and polling place.
- If the online record looks wrong, or you cannot use the online service, contact the state or local election office through USAGov’s directory.
Check your record after a move or legal name change. Vote.gov advises voters to update their registration after moving, whether the move is within the same state or across state lines, and after a legal name change. If you want to change party affiliation, check the state’s process promptly; some states require party registration to participate in a party primary.

Open USAGov’s state and local election-office directory, select your state or territory, and follow the official election-authority link. Use the state or local office for questions that an online status result does not resolve, and for jurisdiction-specific instructions such as where to vote or what identification may be accepted.
#1 Best Overall
The Election Assistance Commission also provides a state-by-state directory at Register And Vote in Your State. The EAC says its summaries are drawn from state websites and directs voters to verify information and timelines through linked state and local sources. Treat the directory as a way to find those sources, not as a substitute for checking current instructions.
Check the deadline for your state, election, and registration method
There is no single nationwide voter-registration deadline. Each state and territory sets its own procedures. Some allow registration on Election Day; others close registration earlier. USAGov cautions that a deadline may be as much as a month before an election, but that is a general warning—not a universal cutoff date.
Rank #2
To find the deadline that applies to you, start at Vote.gov, select your state or territory, and follow the official state link. Confirm the deadline for the specific election and the method you intend to use, such as registering online, by mail, or in person. For a broader overview, see USAGov’s voter registration deadlines, then verify the date with your state or local election authority.
Know what the national registration form does—and does not cover
Vote.gov says the National Mail Voter Registration Form is available for every state except New Hampshire, North Dakota, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. Do not assume that the form is the right option for your state or situation: follow the state-specific instructions linked from Vote.gov.

A registration card and voter ID are separate questions
Vote.gov says you do not need to bring your voter-registration card to vote. That does not determine whether you need identification: accepted ID requirements are a separate matter governed by state rules. Check your state election authority’s current instructions rather than relying on possession of a registration card as proof of what you must bring.

Election dates, deadlines, locations, and procedures can change and differ across jurisdictions. Even a government directory’s state summary may not be current for the election you have in mind. For example, the EAC page dated December 23, 2025 includes a New York entry summarized as a registration deadline 10 days before Election Day and marked updated November 12, 2024. That dated entry is not a safe basis for current guidance; use the linked state authority to confirm the applicable deadline.
This guide helps you find official U.S. election resources; it is not a state-by-state deadline chart or an eligibility determination. For eligibility, deadlines, identification, early voting, and ballot procedures, use the official state or local source for your jurisdiction and circumstances.
