The quickest way to identify a motherboard in Windows is to open System Information (msinfo32) and read Baseboard Manufacturer and Baseboard Product. PowerShell can return the same fields in one command. If Windows is unavailable, the BIOS/UEFI information page usually lists the board model. On Linux, use sudo dmidecode --type baseboard or read the available DMI identity files under /sys/devices/virtual/dmi/id.
These methods report firmware-provided SMBIOS/DMI values. A prebuilt computer may show an internal OEM code instead of a retail motherboard name, so verify the result against the complete computer model and the manufacturer’s support documentation before downloading firmware or buying a compatibility-sensitive part.
What you are trying to identify
A computer has several model identifiers, and they are not interchangeable. The system model identifies the complete laptop or desktop sold by an OEM. The baseboard or motherboard identifier describes the main circuit board inside it. Windows and Linux commonly expose both levels through SMBIOS/DMI data.
- Baseboard Manufacturer: the company recorded as the board manufacturer.
- Baseboard Product: the board’s product or model string.
- Baseboard Version: a revision or version value when the firmware supplies one.
- BIOS Version/Date: the installed firmware identifier, which is separate from the board model.
- System Manufacturer and System Model: the identity of the complete computer, which is especially important for laptops and branded desktops.
For a custom-built desktop, the baseboard fields often map directly to a retail motherboard model. For an OEM laptop or desktop, the baseboard product may be an internal part code. In that situation, the full system model or service identifier is usually the safer starting point for driver, BIOS, and parts support.

All of these routes depend on information written to firmware tables. If the firmware contains a generic or incomplete value, changing operating systems will not necessarily produce a better retail name; verification with the computer or board maker may be required.
Find the motherboard model in Windows System Information
System Information, also called MSINFO32, is the quickest Windows graphical method. Microsoft describes it as a utility that gathers a comprehensive view of hardware, system components, and the software environment for diagnosis.
- Press
Win + Rto open the Run dialog. Typemsinfo32and press Enter. You can also search Windows for System Information and open the result. - In the left pane, select System Summary. The summary is selected by default on most installations.
- In the details pane, locate Baseboard Manufacturer and Baseboard Product. Record Baseboard Version as well if it is populated.
- Read BIOS Version/Date only when you also need to identify the installed firmware. It is not a substitute for the motherboard model.
- For an OEM computer, also record System Manufacturer and System Model. Those fields may be the identifiers the manufacturer expects on its support site.
The value in Baseboard Product is the board identifier reported by the firmware. It may be a consumer-facing model, a board revision, or an internal code. Copy the complete string, including punctuation and revision markers; truncating it can make two different boards appear identical.
Save the System Information result
You can export the summary instead of transcribing it. Microsoft documents this example:
msinfo32 /nfo syssum.nfo /categories +systemsummary
Run it from the Run dialog or a command prompt. The command saves the System Summary as an NFO file named syssum.nfo. This is useful when sending details to support, but an ordinary lookup does not require an export.
If the fields are blank or generic
Some systems expose little or no board information in MSINFO32. A value such as a generic “Base Board” string, an all-zero entry, or an OEM code does not prove that the computer lacks a standard motherboard. Use the PowerShell query below, check the firmware screen, and compare the result with the complete computer model before drawing a conclusion.

Use PowerShell for a focused motherboard query
PowerShell can query the Windows Win32_BaseBoard CIM class and display only the fields relevant to the board:
Get-CimInstance -ClassName Win32_BaseBoard | Select-Object Manufacturer, Product, Version
The output lists the manufacturer, product, and version exposed by Windows. It is convenient for copying into a support ticket or incorporating into an inventory script because it avoids the large amount of unrelated information shown by MSINFO32.
Read the output correctly
- Manufacturer is the board manufacturer string.
- Product is the baseboard product string and is normally the field people mean by “motherboard model.”
- Version may identify a hardware revision, but it can also be blank or generic when the firmware does not provide a useful value.
Do not confuse the Product value here with the computer’s system model. A laptop can report an OEM baseboard code while the system model is the market name printed on its case. If the PowerShell result and MSINFO32 disagree, treat the difference as a verification issue rather than choosing whichever string looks more familiar.
Why this is preferable to WMIC
Older instructions often use the WMIC command-line utility. Microsoft has announced WMIC deprecation in future Windows 11 releases, and current guidance favors CIM cmdlets such as Get-CimInstance. Use the PowerShell command above for a new procedure instead of building a workflow around WMIC.
Check the model in BIOS or UEFI
The firmware setup screen is the fallback when Windows cannot boot, a disk has been removed, or you need to identify the board before installing an operating system. It reads the same general firmware identity records but does not depend on an installed OS.
- Save your work and restart the computer.
- During the first seconds of startup, press the setup key specified for your computer or motherboard. F2 and Delete are common on many systems, but there is no universal key; some vendors use another function key, Esc, or a dedicated button.
- Look for a page named System Information, Main, Board Information, or a similar label. The first page often shows the board model and BIOS version.
- Record the exact model string and any visible revision. If you also need firmware details, record the BIOS or UEFI version separately.
- Exit without saving changes. Use the firmware’s discard-and-exit option if it asks whether to save.
Menu names and layouts vary by vendor and by whether the firmware is in an easy or advanced view. If the model is not on the first page, inspect the information-only pages rather than changing configuration settings. Do not select a BIOS update merely because a partial model string looks similar; confirm the complete model and revision on the official support page first.

Find the motherboard model in Linux
Linux exposes many of the same DMI records used by firmware and Windows. The two practical approaches are the dmidecode utility and the DMI files in sysfs.

Use dmidecode
Open a terminal and run:
sudo dmidecode --type baseboard
The --type baseboard option limits the decoded output to baseboard records. Depending on what the firmware supplies, the output can include the manufacturer, product name, version, and serial number. Read the complete product line and keep the version line if it contains a board revision.
dmidecode generally needs elevated access because it reads low-level hardware tables. If the command is unavailable, the installation and package name depend on your Linux distribution; consult that distribution’s documentation rather than applying a package command from another distribution. A live environment may also omit the utility even though the installed system normally includes it.
Read the sysfs DMI files
Many Linux systems expose individual DMI strings under:
/sys/devices/virtual/dmi/id
When present, files for board vendor, board name, and board version can be read directly. Typical examples are:

For example, you can display a value with cat:
cat /sys/devices/virtual/dmi/id/board_vendorcat /sys/devices/virtual/dmi/id/board_namecat /sys/devices/virtual/dmi/id/board_version
The exact files exposed and their readability vary by kernel, hardware, permissions, and distribution. Many identity strings are readable by a regular user, while others may require elevated access. If a file is missing or empty, use dmidecode or check the firmware interface.

Distinguish board data from system data
Linux also exposes system manufacturer and product records. Do not substitute a system product string for the board name when you are checking a motherboard-specific requirement. Compare board and system records together, especially on a laptop or a branded desktop where the board name may be an internal assembly code.

SMBIOS defines separate identity levels for the overall system and its baseboard. Microsoft’s SMBIOS guidance notes that Baseboard Product identifies the baseboard, but the value is set by the company that supplied the firmware and does not have to match an end-user marketing name.

Custom-built desktop
Use the baseboard manufacturer and product together. Search the board maker’s official product catalog or support area for that exact combination, then check whether the page lists a revision such as 1.0, 1.1, or a letter suffix. A revision can affect BIOS files, CPU support, memory compatibility, and connector layout.
Prebuilt desktop or laptop
Start with the full system model, product number, or service identifier printed on the chassis or shown in System Information. OEM support pages may document the motherboard under an internal part code, and a retail motherboard search can lead you to the wrong firmware even when the baseboard string looks plausible.
Before a BIOS or UEFI update
Confirm all of the following on the manufacturer’s support page:
- The complete computer or motherboard model matches.
- The hardware revision, when listed, matches.
- The firmware file is intended for your region or edition when the vendor distinguishes them.
- The update instructions and prerequisites apply to your current firmware.
Never choose a firmware image from a vague or partial string. A failed or incompatible update can leave the computer unable to start, while the identification commands themselves are read-only.

Before buying a compatible component
Use the verified model as a starting point, then check the board’s current specification page for the socket, chipset, memory type, expansion slots, storage interfaces, physical dimensions, and revision-specific limitations. The model string alone is not proof that every revision supports the same processor or memory kit.

Troubleshoot conflicting or missing results
Windows shows an internal code
Record the code exactly, then collect System Manufacturer, System Model, BIOS Version/Date, and the computer’s service identifier. Search the OEM support documentation with the full system identity. Do not replace an unfamiliar baseboard code with a guessed retail model.
PowerShell returns blank properties
Run the command in a normal PowerShell window and check the spelling of Win32_BaseBoard. If the properties remain empty, compare MSINFO32 and the BIOS/UEFI information page. Consistently blank values indicate that the firmware is not exposing a useful string, not that PowerShell has discovered a different board.
BIOS and Windows disagree
Check whether you are comparing the same field. A BIOS screen may show the system model or a board revision, while Windows may show Baseboard Product. Write down the labels beside each value and compare the complete strings, not just the first few characters. If the discrepancy remains, use the manufacturer’s support channel.
Linux cannot run dmidecode
Try the sysfs path under /sys/devices/virtual/dmi/id. If the directory or board files are absent, the kernel or virtualized environment may not expose DMI data. A virtual machine can report the host’s emulated board or a generic virtual platform rather than the physical motherboard; identify the physical host through the virtualization platform or host operating system instead.
The computer is in a virtual machine
Guest Windows or Linux sees the virtual hardware presented by the hypervisor. Its Baseboard Product or DMI board name may therefore identify the virtual platform, not the physical server motherboard. For physical hardware details, run the procedure on the host or ask the infrastructure administrator.
Choosing the shortest reliable path
On a working Windows installation, start with MSINFO32 and use the PowerShell query when you need a compact, copyable result. Use BIOS/UEFI when the operating system is unavailable. From Linux, begin with sudo dmidecode --type baseboard and fall back to the sysfs DMI files when the utility is missing. In every case, treat generic or OEM-specific strings as clues to verify, not as permission to guess a retail model or flash firmware.
