To find your Mac’s local IP address over Wi-Fi, open Apple menu > System Settings > Wi-Fi > Details for the connected network. For Ethernet, go to System Settings > Network, select the Ethernet service, then click Details and open TCP/IP. A MAC address is different: find the Wi-Fi MAC address under Wi-Fi’s Advanced settings, or the Ethernet hardware address under Hardware.
How do I find my Mac’s IP address?
macOS shows the address assigned to the selected network service. The exact fields and labels can vary with the service and macOS version.
For a Wi-Fi connection
- Choose Apple menu > System Settings.
- Click Wi-Fi in the sidebar.
- Click Details next to the connected network.
- Read the IP address entry. The same pane shows the Router address and the current Wi-Fi address. Apple’s Wi-Fi settings guide documents these fields.
For an Ethernet connection
- Choose Apple menu > System Settings, then click Network.
- Select the Ethernet service. A USB-C adapter or dock may appear under a service name that depends on the configuration.
- Click Details, then open TCP/IP to view or configure IP settings. Apple’s Ethernet settings guide describes the service controls.
Where do I find my Mac’s MAC address?
An IP address is part of the service’s Internet Protocol configuration. A MAC (Media Access Control) address identifies a network interface at the local network-access layer; it is not the Mac’s internet-facing IP address.

Wi-Fi’s Details pane also shows the current Wi-Fi address; check the label rather than assuming it is the hardware address.
- Ethernet: In the Ethernet service’s Details pane, open Hardware for hardware information, including the hardware MAC address. Apple’s Ethernet hardware settings guide covers this pane.
Why might my Wi-Fi address differ from the hardware MAC address?
When private Wi-Fi addressing is enabled, a Mac can use a private address for a particular network instead of exposing its hardware Wi-Fi address. Apple says the feature “helps reduce tracking of your Mac by Wi-Fi network operators.” The address shown as the current Wi-Fi address may therefore be a private address, not the hardware value.

On macOS Sequoia 15 or later, the per-network controls are at System Settings > Wi-Fi > Details. Apple documents three choices: Off uses the hardware MAC address; Fixed uses a private address that does not rotate; and Rotating changes to a different private address every two weeks. The default depends on network security: Fixed for new WPA2-or-stronger networks and Rotating for weak or open networks. Those options and the two-week interval apply to the documented Sequoia 15-and-later feature; behavior on older macOS versions differs. See Apple’s private Wi-Fi address guidance.
Apple recommends keeping private addressing enabled on networks that support it. If a network has trouble connecting or working correctly, update software and troubleshoot the network before considering turning the feature off. Organizations may need to adjust network security or use a managed-device profile, and a management profile can prevent users from changing the setting. What do DHCP, manual IP, and router address mean?
An IP address is required when a Mac connects to the internet or another IP network. It may be assigned automatically using DHCP or entered manually. The router entry in Wi-Fi Details identifies the router address shown for that connection; it is separate from the Mac’s own IP address.
To review or change IP configuration, open the relevant service’s Details > TCP/IP pane. macOS supports IPv4 and IPv6 settings there, and a DHCP-configured connection can renew its lease from the same pane. Does this show the public IP address seen by websites?
No. These steps show addresses and configuration for the Mac’s selected local network service. They do not establish the public internet-facing IP address that websites see, which may depend on network routing and privacy services.
