Your Epic Games display name is the readable name attached to your Epic account. Your Epic Games account ID is a separate, permanent identifier. In Fortnite, open the lobby menu, select Settings → Account and Privacy, then hover over Epic Games account ID; the ID appears on the right. To find the display name, sign in to the Epic Games website and read the Display Name field in your account settings.
Display name, account ID and console name: what is the difference?
These three labels can refer to different things, especially when Fortnite is played through a console account.

If a friend asks for your “Epic name,” they usually mean the display name. If Epic Support asks you to identify an account, the account ID or an invoice ID is more precise. Do not substitute a PlayStation or Xbox gamertag for an Epic account ID.

The website is the most reliable place to confirm the name stored on the Epic account, regardless of which platform you use to play.

- Open the Epic Games website and sign in to the Epic account linked to Fortnite.
- Open your account settings.
- Find the field labeled Display Name.
- Read the value shown in that field exactly as it appears, including capitalization and any numbers.
That value is the Epic Games display name associated with the account. If you have more than one Epic account, check the email address or linked-account information before recording the name; a different sign-in can lead to a different Fortnite account.
Epic’s display-name guidance also describes the Epic name used in Fortnite on PC and says Nintendo uses the same Epic Games display name. The website field remains useful when the in-game name is difficult to read or when you are preparing information for account support.
Find the name shown in Fortnite on each platform
PC
On PC, Fortnite uses the Epic account identity. If you need an authoritative spelling, compare the name shown in Fortnite with the Display Name field in your Epic account settings. The website is preferable when you are documenting an account because it clearly labels the value as the Epic display name.

Nintendo
Epic’s support material states that Nintendo uses the same Epic Games display name. A Nintendo nickname or console profile label should not be treated as a separate Epic account ID. Confirm the Epic name on the website if the name shown in a Nintendo menu is unclear.
PlayStation and Xbox
The name visible in Fortnite on PlayStation or Xbox may be the console account’s gamertag rather than the Epic display name. Epic specifically notes that the display name seen while playing on PlayStation or Xbox is the PlayStation or Xbox gamertag. This explains why a console player’s lobby name may not match the value in Epic account settings.

To see the names connected to the Epic account, sign in on the Epic website, open account settings, and select Linked Accounts. The linked-account area is the appropriate place to check which PlayStation or Xbox account is connected and what name that platform supplies. It does not replace the Epic account ID.
Mobile
Epic’s linked-account guidance groups mobile with the platforms that show the Epic account display name. If the name in the game does not match what you expect, verify the signed-in Epic account on the website and review Linked Accounts before assuming that a new account was created.
Find your Epic Games account ID in Fortnite
You can locate the ID without leaving the game. Epic’s current support instructions use the following route:
- Enter a Fortnite match lobby.
- Open the main menu by selecting the profile icon.
- Select Settings.
- Open the Account and Privacy tab.
- Hover over Epic Games account ID.
- Read the identifier shown to the right.
The ID is not your display name. It is the unique identifier Epic assigned during account creation, and Epic says it cannot be changed. Because it is not displayed to other users, another player’s visible lobby name will not reveal that player’s account ID.
When recording the ID, copy every character carefully. Keep it with the account email and the date you checked it, particularly if you are collecting details for a support request. If your platform does not make hovering convenient, use one of the website or launcher methods below.

Other official ways to find the account ID
Epic Games website
- Sign in to the Epic Games website.
- Open Account.
- Look under Account Information.
- Record the account ID shown there.
This route is useful when Fortnite is unavailable, when you are checking an account from a phone or browser, or when the in-game menu labels do not match the version on your screen.
Epic Games Launcher
- Open the Epic Games Launcher and sign in to the relevant account.
- Select the Friends icon.
- Select your profile icon.
- Choose Show Account ID.
Confirm that the launcher is signed in to the same Epic account used for Fortnite. A launcher session belonging to another account will show that account’s ID.
Launcher data files on Windows or Mac
Epic also documents a file-based method for locating account IDs in launcher data on Windows and Mac. It is a technical fallback rather than the normal solution. Use the in-game, account-page, or launcher-menu method first. Do not edit or delete launcher files merely to read an ID; an incorrect change can create a separate sign-in or launcher problem.
Choose the quickest method for your situation

When the Fortnite name does not match your Epic display name
A mismatch is normally a platform-identity issue, not proof that the account ID changed. On PlayStation or Xbox, Fortnite can show the console gamertag. The Epic display name remains the value in the Epic account’s Display Name field, while the account ID remains the immutable identifier.
Use this check:
- Sign in to the Epic website.
- Read Display Name in account settings.
- Open Linked Accounts and identify the connected PlayStation or Xbox account.
- Compare the platform name with the name shown in Fortnite.
- Use the account ID from Account Information or Fortnite’s Account and Privacy screen when an unambiguous identifier is required.
Do not create another Epic account just because two names differ. First verify which Epic account is linked to the console profile you are using.

Troubleshooting the account ID and display name screens
The Account and Privacy option is missing
Return to the lobby and open the main menu through the profile icon before entering settings. Epic’s documented path begins in the lobby, and menu labels can change as Fortnite updates. If the item still does not appear, use Account → Account Information on the Epic website, which provides an independent route to the ID.
The ID is not visible when you hover
Make sure the pointer is over the exact Epic Games account ID entry rather than the display-name or privacy entries. If the platform’s input method makes hovering impractical, use the Epic website or Epic Games Launcher method. Those routes show the same account-level identifier without relying on the in-game tooltip.
The website shows an unexpected name or account
Sign out and sign back in with the account that owns the Fortnite progress you are checking. Then review Linked Accounts. A console sign-in, an Epic email sign-in, and a different social login can lead to different Epic accounts. Compare the account ID, rather than only the visible name, before deciding that information is missing.
You can see a gamertag but not the Epic name
That is expected on PlayStation or Xbox when the console name is the identity displayed in the lobby. Use the Epic website’s Display Name field for the Epic name and the Linked Accounts page for the connected console name.
You need an ID for account recovery
Epic’s recovery guidance lists several details that may help identify an account:

- Epic Games account ID
- Invoice ID
- Email address
- Current or most recent display name
- Linked account name or ID
Epic says an account ID or invoice ID can help locate the account more accurately. Gather the details that belong to the same account and provide them through Epic’s official support process. A display name alone may be ambiguous, especially when several players use similar names.
How to record the information safely
- Label the values separately: “Epic display name,” “Epic account ID,” and “console gamertag.”
- Preserve the account ID exactly; it is a fixed identifier and is easy to mistype.
- Do not infer an ID from a display name or from a friend’s lobby name.
- When contacting support, include the account ID or invoice ID when available, along with the current or most recent display name and linked account details.
- Avoid posting the account ID, email address, invoices, or recovery information publicly. Epic says the ID is not shown to other users, so it is intended for account identification rather than public display.
Examples of the right value to provide
A friend wants to add you
Provide the name your Epic account uses for friend discovery, not a hidden account ID. If you play on PlayStation or Xbox, clarify whether you are giving the console gamertag or the Epic display name so the friend searches for the correct identity.
Epic Support asks which account is yours
Provide the Epic account ID from Fortnite, the Epic website, or the launcher, and add the current or most recent display name. If you have an invoice ID, include it as well because Epic lists it as another precise lookup detail.

You are documenting an account before changing platforms
Record the Epic display name, account ID, and every relevant linked account name or ID. This creates a clear distinction between the permanent Epic identifier and names supplied by PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, or another linked platform.
What can and cannot change
The display name is the human-readable account label. Console platforms may supply a different visible label when Fortnite is played on PlayStation or Xbox. The Epic account ID is different: Epic defines it as a unique identifier assigned during account creation and states that it cannot be changed. It is also not displayed to other users.
That distinction matters when two accounts have similar names, when a console gamertag has changed, or when support needs to locate the exact account. Use the display name for readability and the account ID for unambiguous identification.
Quick checklist
- Need the Epic name? Check Account settings → Display Name on the Epic website.
- Need the in-game ID? Use Lobby → profile icon → Settings → Account and Privacy → Epic Games account ID.
- Need a browser-only ID lookup? Use Account → Account Information.
- Need the launcher route? Use Friends → profile icon → Show Account ID.
- Seeing a different name on PlayStation or Xbox? Check the console gamertag and Linked Accounts; do not confuse either with the account ID.
- Recovering an account? Collect the account ID or invoice ID, email address, current or recent display name, and linked account details.
Epic may revise menu labels or screen layouts in future updates. If a label has moved, use the same concepts—account settings for the display name, Account and Privacy for the in-game ID, Account Information on the website, and Show Account ID in the launcher—and consult the current Epic Games Support instructions.
