Start with the county or parish connected to the event or case, then use an official state directory or prosecutor-association lookup to identify the office. Confirm its district or circuit coverage and verify its phone number, address, and contact instructions on the office’s own page. The right office may not be determined by county lines alone, and titles vary by state.

Find the prosecutor for the relevant county, parish, or district

Begin with the place where the incident or case occurred. A person’s home address by itself may not identify the prosecutor with jurisdiction. Depending on the state, the office may be called a district attorney’s office, prosecutor’s office, or another local title.

  1. Identify the state and place. Note the county or parish associated with the event or case.
  2. Search an official state route. Search the state name with terms such as “district attorney directory,” “find your prosecutor,” or the title used locally. USAGov’s local government page links to local-government information by state; its Alabama page, for example, lists an Office of Prosecution Services District Attorney Listing.
  3. Try a prosecutor association directory. State associations may offer a lookup organized by county, parish, name, district, or circuit. Use the directory that serves the state where the relevant event occurred.
  4. Check the jurisdiction entry. If the directory lists judicial districts or circuits, use that information rather than assuming county boundaries determine coverage.
  5. Open the office’s own page. Confirm its current contact details and follow the published instructions for phone, mail, or online submissions.

Check whether the office covers one county or a wider area

Some prosecutor directories are organized by judicial district or circuit, which may not map one-to-one to counties. Indiana’s prosecutor directory says most judicial circuits align with a single county, but Dearborn and Ohio Counties share one circuit. Use the directory’s listed jurisdiction instead of inferring it from a map or your mailing address. Indiana Prosecuting Attorneys Council: Find My Prosecutor

Verify contact details and use the right channel

Use the state directory to locate the office, then verify its phone number and street address on the linked office site or a government-hosted listing. For example, the Massachusetts government directory lists office addresses, phone numbers, and links to office websites. Mass.gov: District Attorneys

Follow the office’s stated intake process. A general contact form may not be appropriate for an urgent threat, a court deadline, or confidential legal questions. A directory provides a way to reach an office; it does not promise that the office can resolve a private dispute, advise you personally, or handle every kind of inquiry. For an emergency, contact emergency services. For advice about your own case, consult a qualified lawyer.

Examples of state and local lookup routes

  • Pennsylvania: The Pennsylvania District Attorneys Association directory supports searches by county or name and lists office addresses and phone numbers. Find Your Prosecutor
  • Louisiana: The Louisiana District Attorneys Association roster lets visitors select a parish and displays office contact information. Louisiana District Attorneys Association
  • Colorado: The Colorado District Attorneys’ Council provides a map and directory to find a district attorney. Find Your DA
  • Massachusetts: Mass.gov’s directory provides office addresses, phone numbers, and office website links. District Attorneys
  • Indiana: The state prosecutor council lists prosecutors by judicial circuit and county, including shared-circuit information. Find My Prosecutor

These are examples, not a comprehensive nationwide roster. Office names, directory formats, and jurisdiction boundaries differ among states.

What if you cannot identify the office?

Use the relevant state’s government directory or local-government contact page, and search using the county or parish plus the locally used prosecutor title. USAGov’s local governments page provides state-by-state links, while its elected officials guidance explains ways to find county, city, and town contacts. These are navigation resources, not a single nationwide district-attorney roster. If the state directory points to a district or circuit rather than a county, use that jurisdiction entry and verify the office’s details on its official page.
