To improve Wi-Fi in a dead zone, first check whether several devices have trouble in the same place or just one device. Then check your mesh system’s connection test or signal indicator. Move the satellite to an open spot between the weak area and a well-connected mesh point—not deep inside the dead zone—and test again.

How to tell whether a weak spot is a Wi-Fi dead zone

Start where you actually use a device: a desk, bedroom, television, or another regular spot. Check whether the connection problem happens there on several devices or only one.

  • Several devices struggle in the same area: The mesh coverage or the link between mesh units may be the issue.
  • Only one device struggles: Troubleshoot that device before moving nodes. Clients can behave differently and make their own decisions about when to switch between mesh points.

A weak Wi-Fi signal is not, by itself, proof that your internet provider is slow. This placement process checks the local wireless network, not broadband performance.

Check the node’s connection to the mesh

A satellite has to receive a usable signal from the primary router or another mesh point as well as serve nearby devices. A node placed where Wi-Fi is already weakest may have a poor connection back to the rest of the mesh, limiting the coverage it can provide.

  • Our Cybersecurity Commitment - TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement
  • More Gigabit Ports - Each Deco X55 has 3 Gigabit Ethernet ports(6 in total for a 2-pack) and supports Wired Ethernet Backhaul for better speeds. Any of them can work as a Wi-Fi Router

Open your mesh system’s app or follow its manufacturer’s instructions to check node status, run a mesh test, or view a signal indicator. Google’s mesh test measures the connection between the primary point and additional points and requires multiple mesh points. Other brands have their own diagnostics and labels.

Where should you put a mesh node?

Place a satellite partway between the problem area and the nearest well-connected mesh point. That gives it a better chance of reaching the rest of the mesh while extending coverage toward the weak spot. There is no single placement that works for every home: floors, walls, building materials, layout, and the locations of your devices all affect the result.

  • Incredibly fast 3× 3 6 Stream AC1900 speeds makes the deco capable of providing connectivity for up to 100 devices.
  • With advanced Deco Mesh Technology, units work together to form a unified network with a single network name. Devices automatically switch between Decos as you move through your home for the fastest possible speeds.

For Google Nest Wifi and Google Wifi, Google recommends starting at the router and placing the next point about halfway toward the area that needs coverage, no more than two rooms from the router or another point. Treat that as guidance for those products, not a universal spacing rule for every mesh system.

Reduce obstacles and interference

Put mesh units in open locations instead of hiding them in cabinets or placing them behind a television. Thick walls and other obstacles can weaken the connection between points. Linksys also identifies large glass panes, refrigerators, fish tanks, and microwaves as potential obstacles. TP-Link advises keeping Deco units in open locations away from walls and metal objects.

Nearby electronics may also matter, depending on the system and frequency band. TP-Link notes that microwaves, Bluetooth devices, and USB 3.0 devices can interfere with 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. Follow your manufacturer’s advice on height and spacing rather than assuming one placement rule applies to all hardware.

Test after moving the node

  1. Move the satellite to the new open location between the weak area and a well-connected point.
  2. Run the mesh test again or check the system’s node signal indicator.
  3. If the link is still weak, move the satellite closer to its router or source node and test again. Google notes that a higher location may help.
  4. Check connectivity again in the room or spot where the problem occurred.

For example, TP-Link’s Deco app displays the signal from the source to a satellite; its support guidance recommends two bars in that product workflow. That rating is not a standard for other mesh brands.

What to try if moving a node does not fix coverage

Check whether a device is holding on to a distant point

Some clients may remain connected to a farther mesh point rather than switching immediately. Linksys says roaming behavior varies by client; toggling Wi-Fi on the affected device may prompt it to choose another node. This is a possible client-specific troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed fix.

Consider another compatible mesh point

If repositioning the existing units leaves coverage problems, an additional compatible point may help. Check compatibility with your system’s product family before buying; adding more units is not automatically better for every network.

Consider wired Ethernet backhaul

If your hardware supports it and Ethernet cabling is practical, a wired backhaul can connect mesh points without relying on a wireless link between them. TP-Link describes Ethernet backhaul as more stable and faster than wireless backhaul for Deco, and ASUS also presents Ethernet as a performance-oriented option. The result in a particular home depends on its equipment and setup.

Choose the next step based on the problem

What you find What to try
Several devices have weak Wi-Fi in the same spot Check the satellite’s mesh link, then reposition it toward the weak area while keeping it within good reach of its source.
The satellite itself reports a weak connection Move it closer to the primary router or another well-connected point, then test again.
Only one device has trouble Troubleshoot the client and its connection before treating the issue as a whole-home coverage gap.
Coverage remains poor after repositioning Check whether a compatible additional point or supported wired backhaul is practical.
