To find Wi-Fi dead zones, test the same device in several rooms, note where the connection slows or drops, then change one thing at a time and repeat the tests. Start by improving router placement and checking whether the issue follows a room or a device; add an extender or mesh system only if those free checks point to a coverage gap.

How to map weak Wi-Fi areas

Use one phone, laptop, or tablet for an initial set of checks. In the rooms where you work, stream, or make calls, record the approximate time, download and upload speeds if available, and what actually happens: no connection, intermittent drops, high delay, or slower throughput. Repeat the same checks in the same places after each change. Microsoft recommends testing in different locations and retesting after adjustments; Microsoft’s home Wi-Fi guidance explains why layout affects reception.

Speed-test results are snapshots, not diagnoses. Results can vary by time of day, other network users, the device, and the broadband service itself. A low result in one room alone does not prove that your internet provider is delivering a slow connection. Ofcom’s broadband and Wi-Fi help recommends distinguishing in-home Wi-Fi issues from broadband service issues.

A Wi-Fi analyzer app can add context by showing signal strength and nearby networks. Signal readings are commonly shown in dBm; a less-negative reading is stronger, but no single reading guarantees a usable connection. Treat the app as another clue alongside real-world checks such as whether calls stay stable or video stops buffering.

Does the problem follow the room or the device?

Try more than one device in the weak room, then try the affected device in another room. If several devices struggle in the same place, a coverage gap, walls, or interference are more plausible explanations. If only one device has trouble in multiple rooms, check that device before buying network equipment: install available updates, review its Wi-Fi settings, and consider whether its case or orientation could be affecting reception. This comparison is a useful diagnostic clue, not a guaranteed test.

If possible, compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection near the router. A wired result can help separate a wireless coverage problem from a broader broadband or router problem, though other factors can still affect the result. Ofcom notes that distance, walls, device capability, interference, and other users can all affect performance.

What to change before buying equipment

Move the router into a better position

Place the router in an open, elevated, roughly central spot, with fewer obstacles between it and the devices that need coverage. Avoid the floor, corners, enclosed cabinets, and positions behind furniture. Keep it away from likely sources of interference, including microwave ovens, cordless phones, and baby monitors. If its antennas can be adjusted, Ofcom suggests pointing them in different directions. See Ofcom’s Wi-Fi improvement advice for additional placement guidance.

Check the Wi-Fi channel and width carefully

Changing wireless settings can help in some crowded or compatibility-sensitive setups, but do not switch settings at random. Microsoft notes that 2.4 GHz channels 1, 6, and 11 do not overlap; which is preferable depends on nearby network conditions. If the 2.4 GHz signal is strong and the channel is clear, a 20 MHz channel width may help reliability with older adapters when a wider setting is causing problems. Router menus differ, so consult your router’s documentation before changing either setting.

Change one thing, then retest

After a meaningful change, repeat your original checks in the same rooms. Changing one setting or placement at a time makes it easier to tell what helped and prevents an improvement from being confused with normal variation. Ofcom’s guidance recommends starting with free troubleshooting before considering paid options.

Which Wi-Fi fix fits the pattern?

Problem pattern Option to consider Trade-offs and setup
One localized weak room, and the router cannot be moved Wi-Fi extender or booster It can extend an existing signal toward a targeted area, but it needs a useful signal where it is installed and may reduce speed. See Microsoft’s Wi-Fi guidance and Ofcom’s help page.
Weak coverage across several rooms or floors Mesh Wi-Fi system Place points partway toward the weak area where they can still maintain a good connection to the router or another point—not at the dead zone by default. Use the system’s mesh test and reposition points with a poor link; too many points can make issues worse. Google Home’s placement guidance explains how to position Wi-Fi devices.
A stationary device needs reliable service and cable routing is practical Ethernet cable Ofcom says wired connections are usually faster and more reliable. A cable avoids relying on Wi-Fi for that device but does not improve wireless coverage for other devices. See Ofcom’s broadband and Wi-Fi help.
An old router or frequent disconnections persist after free checks Ask the provider about supported router options, or consider a replacement router Check with your broadband provider first. A router you buy yourself may be harder to set up, and the provider may not support it. See Ofcom’s help page and Wi-Fi improvement advice.
Considering a network connection over household wiring Powerline adapter Performance depends on the home’s electrical wiring. Check local safety marks and follow the manufacturer’s instructions; it is not a guaranteed Wi-Fi fix. See Ofcom’s broadband and Wi-Fi help.

How to verify that coverage improved

Repeat the original checks in the same places and, if practical, at roughly the same time of day. Compare the results with your notes, but judge success by the problem you were trying to solve: stable calls, video without buffering, or acceptable game latency. If you added mesh points, run the system’s connection test and move any point with a weak upstream link.
