Google Maps has two separate accessibility tools: a wheelchair-accessible filter for public-transit directions, and accessibility attributes on some place listings. Use the transit filter to compare available transit routes; check a place’s profile for details such as its entrance, restroom, seating, parking, or elevator. Neither tool guarantees that a route or venue will meet every person’s needs.

These steps reflect Google’s help pages available on October 7, 2026. Menu labels can vary by device or change over time.

Filter public-transit routes for wheelchair accessibility

The wheelchair-accessible option applies to transit directions. It filters the route choices Google Maps can show; it is not a general-purpose filter for walking or driving directions.

If routes are missing or incomplete

Transit directions depend on local transit agencies supplying route information to Google Maps, and Google notes that some directions have limited availability. If you do not see a route or its details look incomplete, check service and accessibility information with the transit operator. The filter itself does not certify that a route is step-free, has a suitable gradient, or will work for a particular wheelchair or mobility need. Google explains transit-direction availability in Get directions & show routes in Google Maps — Android.

Check accessibility details on a place listing

On Android, iPhone, or iPad, you can emphasize accessibility information in Maps, then review the information shown on a business or place profile. Google lists attributes for entrances, restrooms, seating, parking, and elevators. This feature is available only in certain countries; Google’s reviewed help pages do not provide a complete country list.

What Google’s attributes mean

Google’s Android guidance gives examples for interpreting its attributes. An entrance marked accessible is intended to have an opening about three feet (one meter) wide and no steps, or a permanent or movable ramp if there are steps. An entrance available only through a revolving door should be marked no. For a restroom, the guidance describes an entrance at least one meter wide and access without steps. These are definitions for Google’s attributes, not a guarantee that a venue will meet an individual’s specific requirements.

Use street-level map details as extra context

In select cities, zooming in on Google Maps may reveal accurately scaled road widths and details such as park pathways and stairs, sidewalks, crosswalks, medians, and pedestrian islands. Coverage is limited to select cities, and Google does not describe these details as certification that a walking route is wheelchair-accessible. Use them as supplementary planning context, and verify conditions that matter for your trip. See Explore new street-level details.

How the three accessibility tools differ

Tool What it helps you check Where to find it Important limitation
Wheelchair-accessible transit filter Available public-transit route options Directions → Transit → Options → Routes Depends on transit data and availability in Maps; it does not certify every part of a route.
Place accessibility attributes Reported details about a venue’s entrance, restroom, seating, parking, or elevator Mobile Maps: Settings → App & display → Emphasize accessibility info; then open a place profile Available only in certain countries; Google’s reviewed help pages do not give a complete country list.
Street-level details Road widths and features such as sidewalks, crosswalks, pathways, and stairs Zoom in on a supported map area Available in select cities and not described as an accessibility certification.

Because route and place information can be limited or may not address a particular access need, confirm important details with the transit operator or venue before relying on them for a specific journey.
