For public tap water, start with your water supplier’s annual Consumer Confidence Report (CCR). For rivers and lakes, search EPA’s How’s My Waterway and check your state’s water program for newer results. For beaches, use the responsible local or state beach program for current advisories. To follow pollution cleanup, find the site in EPA’s Superfund or Cleanups in My Community tools, then read its latest documents and updates.
The right source depends on whether you mean treated tap water, a river or lake, a swimming beach, or a cleanup site. Without a location, the specific supplier, waterbody, beach program, or site cannot be identified; search with your address, supplier, waterbody, county, or site name.
Find results for public tap water
- Identify your water supplier. Start with EPA’s local drinking-water information page for provider and report resources. States and territories also collect information about supplier performance.
- Find the supplier’s Consumer Confidence Report. The CCR is also called an annual drinking-water quality report. EPA says community water systems must provide it by July 1 each year. If you did not receive one, contact the supplier or use EPA’s CCR search tool.
- Check what the report covers. Look for the water source, contaminants detected, whether the system met state and EPA drinking-water standards, and any required health information or corrective actions. The report applies to the public system and reporting period it names.
- Follow up on a violation or question. Contact the supplier and your state drinking-water agency. EPA’s community drinking-water information in How’s My Waterway draws on the Safe Drinking Water Information System, but the supplier’s CCR is the annual report intended for consumers.
A CCR does not test the plumbing inside an individual home and does not establish the quality of a private well. The appropriate well-testing advice depends on the jurisdiction and the well; the public-system sources here do not specify a local schedule or laboratory.

Look up a river, lake, or watershed
- Search EPA’s How’s My Waterway. Search by community, address, or waterbody. Its community information can include monitoring locations, past water conditions, swimming and fish-consumption information, aquatic life, impairments, drinking-water information, and restoration or protection activity.
- Read the date and purpose of each result. A sample, an impairment listing, and an assessment for a particular use are different kinds of information. They cover specific dates and questions, not necessarily current conditions for every use. For example, a “Drinking Water” assessment concerns raw source water before treatment; it is not an instruction to drink that water.
- Check for newer state or local records. EPA says more recent or detailed information may not yet be available in its databases. Follow the state water-program links in How’s My Waterway or contact the state or local environmental agency when a record is missing, old, or unclear.
- Search monitoring data when useful. The Water Quality Portal, a cooperative service sponsored by USGS, EPA, and the National Water Quality Monitoring Council, brings together publicly available monitoring data from participating sources.
When comparing records, note who collected or reported the data, the sample or assessment date, what was measured or assessed, the relevant standard or advisory, and whether the page is a current notice, periodic report, or historical record. A single result is not a real-time, all-purpose safety test.

Check current beach and swimming advisories
Use EPA’s beach program contacts directory to find the state, territorial, Tribal, or EPA program responsible for the beach. Check that jurisdiction’s own page or contact it for the latest water-quality results, advisory, and open-or-closed status. Reporting intervals to EPA vary, so a federal listing may not reflect the newest local decision.
Find pollution cleanup sites and updates
- Search for the site. Use EPA’s Superfund “Where You Live” page to search by location, or use Cleanups in My Community, which includes sites addressed through several cleanup programs.
- Open the site profile. Review its cleanup history, contaminants and affected media, plans, contacts, documents, and milestones. Confirm that the profile matches the location and site you mean.
- Read the newest substantive update. Look for a recent fact sheet, community update, meeting notice, or five-year review. EPA’s Superfund document search indexes records such as decision documents, remedial investigations and feasibility studies, remedial design and action records, five-year reviews, and community-involvement materials.
- Ask the site contacts about unresolved questions. EPA’s community-involvement guidance describes updates through public events, newsletters, fact sheets, and presentations. Contact the site’s Community Involvement Coordinator or Remedial Project Manager for clarification about current work or exposure controls.
Interpret cleanup milestones carefully
Construction completion means required physical construction is complete; it does not by itself show that final cleanup levels have been achieved. A five-year review evaluates whether a remedy remains protective when contamination is still above levels for unrestricted use. Consult the site-specific review, advisories, and exposure information to understand remaining work and restrictions. EPA explains these milestones in its Superfund cleanup process information and its five-year review guidance.

Make sure two records are actually comparable
- Water or site: treated tap water, raw source water, river or lake, beach, or a specific cleanup site and operable unit.
- Record and reporter: utility report, state or Tribal assessment, monitoring partner’s sample, EPA profile, or site review.
- Timeframe: sample date, assessment period, reporting year, document date, or current operational notice.
- Question answered: a particular contaminant, designated use, advisory, cleanup phase, or exposure control.
- Status meaning: distinguish an historical record from a current notice, and a construction milestone from a finding that cleanup goals have been met.
For a specific location, the most useful search terms are usually the street address or water supplier for tap water; the waterbody name and county for surface water; the beach name for swimming status; and the site name or county for cleanup records.
