When a fantasy football starter gets hurt, target the receiver who is most likely to inherit routes and targets—not simply the next name on the depth chart. Confirm the absence, check how the offense has used the replacement, then weigh that opportunity against your league settings and the latest news before submitting a claim.

How to identify the receiver who benefits

  1. Confirm the injury and expected absence. A confirmed inactive designation or injured-reserve placement is firmer evidence than an uncertain timeline. If the starter’s status is still unclear, treat any backup recommendation as provisional and revisit it when practice reports and team updates arrive.
  2. Check who is actually taking the work. Look for routes run, targets, target share, and evidence that the receiver has already been used in the role. A depth-chart label can help, but it does not establish that a player will receive meaningful opportunities. RotoWire says its NFL depth charts are updated for roster changes such as inactives, while cautioning that official team charts can be misleading; use a chart alongside observed usage, not in place of it: RotoWire NFL depth charts.
  3. Separate opportunity from results. Catches, yards, and touchdowns describe what happened in a game. Routes and target share help show whether the player had a role that might continue. One big box score is not proof of a lasting breakout, and a disappointing game does not automatically erase evidence of involvement.
  4. Apply your league’s context. Check that the player is available in your league, then consider scoring format, roster depth, waiver budget, and matchup. A roster percentage in a published waiver column is a dated snapshot, not a measure of current availability in your league.
  5. Recheck before the claim processes. A starter’s return, a change in practice status, or another receiver taking the routes can alter the recommendation. Review the latest practice reports, inactive lists, and your platform’s availability immediately before acting.

Examples from 2026 waiver columns

These are time-stamped illustrations of how to assess an injury-created opportunity, not a current ranking or confirmation of player status. NFL.com’s archive lists its 2026 Week 2, Week 3, and Week 4 waiver articles as published September 14, September 21, and September 28, respectively: NFL.com Week 4 waiver wire, Week 3, Week 2, and waiver-wire archive. Use the week and year with each example because injuries, roles, and roster rates change.

Mack Hollins — New England, Week 4 (2026)

NFL.com described Hollins as a short-term WR1 with A.J. Brown expected to be out into mid-October. In the game cited by the September 28 article, Hollins caught six of nine targets for 87 yards, with a team-high 19.5% target share and 2.3 yards per route run. The article listed him as rostered in 5% of leagues at that time. Those figures and the injury timeline belong to that dated article, not a current guarantee of role, status, or availability.

Keenan Allen — Indianapolis, Week 4 (2026)

With Alec Pierce on injured reserve, Allen received a season-high nine targets and caught six for 63 yards and a touchdown, according to the Week 4 column. NFL.com called him playable that week and projected potential usefulness for a few weeks beyond it; that was a dated forecast, not a confirmed duration. His listed roster rate was 24% in that article.

Kalif Raymond — Chicago, Week 4 (2026)

The Week 4 article cited six catches on seven targets for 90 yards and a touchdown in the latest game it discussed. It also reported a 23.1% team target share and team leads of 19 catches and 214 receiving yards at that point. NFL.com listed Raymond at a 10% roster rate, while warning that his immediate matchup against the Jets was difficult. The example shows why role and matchup belong in the same decision.

Devaughn Vele — New Orleans, Weeks 2–3 (2026)

NFL.com tied Vele’s opportunity to Jordyn Tyson’s hamstring absence. The Week 2 article reported seven catches on nine targets for 69 yards and a goal-line touchdown in Week 1, and projected Vele as the WR2 until at least mid-October, possibly longer depending on Tyson’s recovery. The Week 3 article then reported 12 catches on 16 targets for 133 yards and a touchdown across two weeks without Tyson, while noting that Chris Olave remained the leading target. These are separate weekly snapshots; the newer role and production were useful evidence to assess, not proof of a permanent position in the offense.

Dontayvion Wicks — Philadelphia, Week 4 (2026)

Wicks was not presented as a direct replacement for a specific injured starter. The Week 4 article characterized him as a future-oriented pickup, citing 2.3 yards per route run and a 31.2% air-yards share despite a disappointing game. Week 3’s column had cited 2.8 yards per route run and his route volume. The contrast illustrates why a box score is only one part of evaluating involvement; it does not make Wicks an injury-based target in every league or week.

  • Expected opportunity: Who is likely to run more routes and receive more targets?
  • Evidence of a role change: Has the receiver already seen expanded routes or targets, or is the claim based only on a depth-chart label?
  • Absence certainty and duration: Is the starter confirmed out, on injured reserve, or merely questionable? How firm is the expected timeline?
  • Production and scoring chances: What has the receiver done recently, including red-zone involvement, and does that production align with the opportunity?
  • Team and matchup context: What does the immediate matchup look like, and is the offense likely to provide useful passing opportunities?
  • League fit and cost: Is the receiver available, does the scoring format reward his likely role, and is the claim worth the roster spot or waiver budget?

The 2026 NFL.com examples provide dated figures for targets, routes, target share, catches, yards, touchdowns, roster rates, and injury context. They do not establish universal waiver bids or rankings that apply across leagues.

What to verify before making a live claim

  • Check the latest team and NFL injury updates for the starter and the prospective replacement.
  • Review practice participation and the final inactive list as they become available; an earlier weekly projection may no longer reflect the situation.
  • Confirm the player is unrostered in your league and compare the opportunity with your scoring format and roster needs.
  • Reassess routes, targets, and matchup if another receiver has entered the rotation or the starter’s return appears closer.

Depth-chart and projection tools can be useful as optional research aids. RotoWire describes its paid access as including full NFL depth charts, weekly projections, custom fantasy rankings, and rest-of-season projections, and says its charts are updated in response to injuries and roster news. Its page is dated October 4, 2026: RotoWire NFL depth charts and features. A tool is an input, not a substitute for current team news and the usage evidence relevant to your league.
