Can you ride Big Boy or No. 844?
Sometimes, but passenger rides are rare and should not be assumed for every tour stop. The November 21, 2026, Greeley-to-Denver trip is a ticketed fundraiser; the Denver display is a separate free viewing opportunity. What to expect at a public display
Union Pacific says displays are generally free unless the event schedule says otherwise. Capacity limits may mean waiting, and visitors may need to stand for an extended period. Surfaces can be uneven, and designated seating is not provided. Check the weather, dress for outdoor conditions, and stay hydrated; water bottles are allowed. Event-specific information can differ, so consult the display-day FAQ and the event listing before you go.
Stay safe around the train
- Remain at least 25 feet from the tracks when viewing or photographing the locomotive, as Union Pacific directs.
- Never stand on the tracks or ballast for a photo or video, and never climb on the locomotive or other railroad equipment.
- Follow posted barriers and event staff instructions. Drones are not allowed during display days; consult the event FAQ for restrictions that apply while the locomotive is moving.

Where else can you see Union Pacific steam?
Union Pacific’s Cheyenne Steam Shop is inside an active railroad facility and is not open to walk-in visitors. It is not a fallback viewing attraction when a tour is not nearby. The Cheyenne Depot Museum periodically arranges Steam Shop tours as fundraising events; check the museum for any currently offered tour. Big Boy No. 4004 is permanently displayed at Holliday Park in Cheyenne, but it is a different locomotive from operating Big Boy No. 4014. Which locomotive are you looking for?
Big Boy No. 4014 is the only Big Boy still operating. No. 844, known as the Living Legend, is Union Pacific’s last steam locomotive built for the railroad. Their November 2026 event is their first announced public reunion since their joint appearance in 2019. Because they are distinct locomotives, check the event listing for which engine is scheduled rather than assuming every appearance includes both.
