There is no single water filter that fits every Samsung refrigerator. To find the right replacement, check your fridge’s full model number in Samsung’s filter finder, consult its manual, or read the model code printed on the installed cartridge. Then confirm that the replacement is listed for your exact refrigerator and market.
How do I know which water filter to buy for my Samsung fridge?
Start with the refrigerator, not a broad “Samsung compatible” label. Find the full model number on the appliance and enter it in the filter finder for your region. Samsung Canada says the model label is on the inside right wall on common refrigerator styles; placement can vary, so check the manual if you cannot find it. If the model number is unavailable, read the code on the cartridge currently installed, then cross-check it against the manual or Samsung’s official listing. Cartridge codes are useful clues, but the fridge model and regional listing are the compatibility check.

Filter codes are not universal
Samsung’s Canada and US guidance names HAF-CIN, HAF-QIN, and HAF-CU1/HAFCU1 families. Samsung UK also describes market-specific internal and external types, including HAFEX/EXP. These examples are not a complete global catalog, and a similar-looking code or the Samsung name alone does not establish fit. Confirm the precise model and market before ordering using Samsung’s Canada guidance, US guide, or UK instructions.

How often should I change the filter?
Samsung recommends replacing refrigerator water filters every six months. Samsung Canada’s guide, updated May 16, 2026, says, “We recommend replacing yours every 6 months.” This is the manufacturer’s recommended interval; local water quality and how often you use the dispenser can affect timing. On many refrigerators, the filter indicator is a timer reminder, not a direct water-quality measurement. Reset it after installing the new cartridge.
Reduced water flow can be another sign that a filter may be due. Samsung Canada suggests comparing dispenser flow with and without the filter: a noticeable difference can indicate that the cartridge needs replacing. Use the refrigerator manual for the applicable check and avoid drinking unfiltered water if the household supply itself is unsafe.

How do I replace a Samsung refrigerator water filter?
Filter location, cartridge alignment, lock direction, reminder controls, and flushing requirements vary by refrigerator and cartridge. Find the model-specific instructions in the manual or Samsung’s regional guide before starting; do not combine steps or flush amounts from different models or markets.

- Prepare the refrigerator. Identify the filter location and the model-specific shutoff and pressure-relief procedure. For many internal filters, Samsung instructs users to shut off the water supply and dispense water until the flow stops to relieve pressure.
- Remove the old cartridge. Unlock it using the direction and release method specified for your model, then pull it out.
- Install the replacement. Remove the new cartridge’s protective cap, align it as directed, insert it fully, and turn or lock it into place. Do not force a cartridge that does not seat correctly.
- Reset the reminder. Use the filter-reset control or button sequence specified in the manual. Controls differ across models.
- Flush the new filter. Follow the model-specific instructions before drinking the water. Samsung Canada advises dispensing about seven minutes—roughly 10–12 large glasses—for the filter types covered by its guide. Samsung UK specifies a 10-litre flush for the procedures it describes. These instructions are not interchangeable; use the one for your refrigerator and cartridge.

What if the replacement filter will not fit?
First relieve water pressure and verify that the cartridge code is correct for the refrigerator. Samsung’s US filter-fit troubleshooting guide describes a specific HAF-CU1 issue: the lock design changed from two ribs to three to provide a tighter fit and seal. Samsung says the newer design fits older refrigerator models, but the housing may need to be fully unlocked.
For that HAF-CU1 case, Samsung’s procedure is to temporarily reinstall the old filter, press it in while turning it farther to the left until it stops, remove it, and then fit the replacement. Follow Samsung’s instructions for your refrigerator; if the cartridge still will not install, stop rather than forcing it and contact Samsung support. Samsung warns that a poorly fitting third-party filter may leak or damage the housing or break inside it. Samsung recommends its Genuine Filters; that is the manufacturer’s recommendation, not an independent comparative test.

What do Samsung’s filtration claims mean?
Samsung US states that its covered water filters meet NSF/ANSI 42, 53, and 401 and says they reduce contaminants including chlorine, lead, mercury, and some emerging contaminants. Those are Samsung’s claims for the filters it covers, not a guarantee for every cartridge sold as compatible. They also do not mean that filtering makes an unsafe water supply safe. Check the exact product and your local water advisories when deciding what water is suitable to drink.
