Measure both feet, use the longer foot’s length in Nike’s size chart, and then check the fit note on the exact retro shoe’s current product page. Nike recommends going up to the next size when your foot measurement falls between chart sizes; individual models can give more specific advice.
Measure your feet and use Nike’s chart
- Measure both feet. Use the longer measurement when choosing a size, since one foot may be larger than the other.
- Compare that foot length with Nike’s chart. Select the chart for the appropriate category; the cited Nike U.S. men’s footwear size chart provides foot-length guidance.
- Do not equate the chart measurement with the CM label on a shoe. Nike says the CM marking on a shoe box or label is not the same as foot length measured in centimeters. Use the chart’s foot-length values rather than treating the label’s CM figure as a direct measurement.
- If your measurement is between sizes, follow Nike’s chart advice to size up. Then check the product page for any more specific fit recommendation for that shoe.
Check the exact retro model’s fit recommendation
Nike’s advice can vary by model and version, so a general size-chart result is only one part of the decision. Check the size guide and fit note on the current listing for the exact shoe you plan to buy. Nike Help also advises using the product-page size guide, and Nike Brazil Help notes that fit can vary among products in the same size.
Nike Cortez Leather: a model-specific example
For the Nike Cortez Leather men’s shoe, style DM4044-105, Nike’s U.S. listing says: “Fits small; we recommend ordering a half size up.” That half-size recommendation applies to this listed Cortez Leather model; it should not be treated as a universal rule for Nike retro running shoes.
The current Cortez listing also describes a wider toe area and firmer side panels. Because construction can differ between versions, older accounts of how a previous Cortez fit may not describe the current version.
#1 Best Overall
- Wide collar opening captures the proportions of '70s running style.
- Single-piece injected midsole adds flexibility.
- Flex grooves in outsole for all-day comfort.
- IM4006-003
Consider width separately from length
If the length-based size seems right but the shoe feels tight across the forefoot, check whether the model is offered in a width that suits you. Nike’s U.S. men’s footwear chart lists wide shoes as having approximately 6.35 mm more toe-box girth than regular width and extra-wide shoes as having approximately 12.7 mm more. These are width-category differences, not amounts to add to your foot length or a separate shoe-size conversion.
The Cortez Leather listing describes its toe area but does not give a numeric width measurement. Do not assume that description, or Nike’s general width figures, establishes a measured width for every retro silhouette.

Compare listings without assuming all retro shoes fit alike
When choosing between two Nike retro runners, compare the exact listing’s fit recommendation, your foot length against its size guide, available widths and toe-box description, and the version’s materials or construction. The official pages cited here do not provide comparable independent measurements across several retro models, so they do not support ranking shoes such as the Internationalist, Waffle Trainer, Pegasus retros, or Cortez as wider or narrower than one another.
If you can, try on the exact shoe before committing. Otherwise, check the retailer’s return terms for your region before ordering; availability and return conditions depend on where you buy.
