The right Apple purchase starts with the job you need it to do, not the lowest number on a product page. A phone, tablet, Mac and Apple Watch are different kinds of tools, so a $249 watch is not a substitute for a $449 iPad, and a $699 phone is not a laptop replacement for most work. Set an all-in spending ceiling, choose the category that matches your tasks, then compare models and configurations within that category.
The prices below are current starting prices observed on Apple’s US storefront in 2026. They exclude sales tax and may not reflect the storage, connectivity, accessories, carrier plan or other configuration you ultimately need.
Start with the job, not the price
Choosing by price alone is the fastest way to buy the wrong Apple device. First identify where the device will be used, what must run on it, how often it will travel, and whether it needs its own cellular connection. Then use price to narrow suitable choices.

An iPhone is the practical starting point when you need calls, messages, mobile apps, a camera and a device that stays with you. Compare iPhone models only after deciding how much storage you need, whether you need a particular camera or display capability, and whether a carrier offer changes the effective price. The cheapest iPhone is a budget anchor, not automatically the best value for every user.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Choose an iPad for a larger touch screen and lighter computing
An iPad fits reading, streaming, note-taking, drawing and other touch-first tasks. It can also handle some productivity work, but keyboard, stylus, storage and cellular options can materially change the final bill. Decide whether you want a compact tablet, a general-purpose model, or a higher-end model before comparing prices.
Choose a Mac when desktop software and sustained work matter
A MacBook is the relevant category for desktop workflows, extended writing, development, creative applications or many windows at once. A lower-cost Mac can be the right choice if your applications and storage needs are modest; a higher starting price may be justified when your work requires a different configuration. Do not treat an iPad’s lower entry price as proof that it can replace your Mac workflow.
Choose an Apple Watch for glanceable information and wrist-based tracking
An Apple Watch is a companion device, not a replacement for a phone, tablet or computer. It makes sense when notifications, timekeeping, activity features or quick interactions on your wrist are the goal. Include the cost of the iPhone relationship and any desired band or connectivity option when setting your budget.

Write down the maximum amount you are prepared to spend at checkout and the maximum recurring payment you can comfortably carry. A listed starting price is only the first line of that calculation.
- Device price: use the starting price as an anchor, then select the storage, size and connectivity configuration you actually require.
- Tax: Apple’s displayed price is before any applicable sales tax.
- Accessories: budget for a case, charging equipment, keyboard, stylus, additional band or other essential items rather than treating them as optional afterthoughts.
- Connectivity: cellular iPad or Watch versions can add both an upfront cost and a continuing service charge.
- Coverage: decide whether any protection plan or insurance belongs in your ceiling.
- Existing-device value: count a trade-in only after you have a confirmed estimate and understand its conditions.
Keep two numbers: your device ceiling and your all-in ceiling. If a model meets the first but exceeds the second once accessories and tax are included, it is outside your budget.

Which Apple device should you buy on a budget?
| Your primary need | Category to investigate first | Budget anchor | Questions to answer before ordering |
|---|---|---|---|
| Calls, messaging, mobile apps and an everyday camera | iPhone | iPhone 17e at $699 | How much storage, which camera or display features, and can a trade-in or carrier offer apply? |
| Reading, streaming, handwritten notes or drawing on a larger touch screen | iPad | iPad at $449 | Do you need a keyboard, stylus, cellular service or more storage? |
| Desktop applications, long writing sessions, coding or demanding multitasking | Mac | MacBook Neo at $699 | Will your software run on the chosen Mac, and is the base storage sufficient? |
| Notifications, timekeeping and wrist-based activity features | Apple Watch | Apple Watch SE 3 at $249 | Will it be paired with your existing iPhone, and do you need cellular connectivity? |
If you need two jobs, choose the primary job first. For example, someone who needs desktop software and occasional reading should budget for a Mac before considering an iPad as a second screen or travel companion. Someone who mainly needs communication should not spend laptop money on an iPad Pro simply because its starting price is close to a MacBook.
Compare models inside the category you chose
iPhone: establish a usable floor, then pay for a specific need
The listed iPhone range runs from $699 for iPhone 17e to $1,999 for iPhone Duo. Treat the $699 model as the floor for a new iPhone purchase, not as evidence that every buyer should choose it. Move upward only when a documented requirement justifies the difference: more storage, a particular camera system, a different screen or design, or a feature that your work depends on.
| iPhone model | Listed US starting price | Budget decision |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 17e | $699 | Baseline for a new iPhone budget; verify that its configuration covers your daily use. |
| iPhone 16 | $799 | Compare its current configuration and any promotion against the 17e rather than assuming the higher price is automatically better value. |
| iPhone 17 | $899 | Consider when the specific model differences matter to your work or media use. |
| iPhone Air | $1,099 | Premium-tier choice; check portability, storage and feature requirements before paying the premium. |
| iPhone 18 Pro | $1,199 | Pro-tier budget; justify it with needs you can name, not a general expectation of being “future-proof.” |
| iPhone Duo | $1,999 | Specialized high-budget option; outside a typical cost-conscious purchase unless its form factor is central to your use. |
Apple’s iPhone storefront also presents model comparisons and shopping help. Use those current comparison tools for feature-level decisions; entry prices alone do not establish a performance ranking.
iPad: choose portability, working surface and accessories together
The iPad range starts at $449, with iPad mini at $599, iPad Air at $749 and iPad Pro at $1,199. The sensible choice depends on how you hold and carry the device, how much screen area your work needs, and whether the tablet must replace paper, a notebook or part of a computer setup.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| iPad model | Listed US starting price | Best budgeting question |
|---|---|---|
| iPad | $449 | Can the base configuration support your reading, media and note-taking needs without immediate upgrades? |
| iPad mini | $599 | Is compact portability worth the additional $150 over the base iPad? |
| iPad Air | $749 | Do your applications or multitasking justify moving $300 above the base iPad? |
| iPad Pro | $1,199 | Do you have a professional requirement for its tier, or would an iPad or Air plus accessories meet the job? |
Add the keyboard or stylus you actually need before comparing the iPad total with a Mac. A tablet that appears cheaper at the device level can approach laptop pricing once it is configured for your workflow.
Mac: compare the work requirement, not just the entry price
Apple lists MacBook Neo from $699 and MacBook Air from $1,299. The $600 gap should be evaluated against software compatibility, storage, display needs, portability and how long each configuration will remain comfortable for your workload.
- List every application you must run, including work, school and accessory software.
- Estimate the documents, media and projects you expect to keep locally.
- Decide whether you need a larger screen or a lighter travel setup.
- Compare the configured price, not just the advertised base model.
Do not infer a detailed performance winner from these starting prices. Apple’s storefront provides model-comparison tools; use the current specifications for your applications and configuration rather than treating the cheaper Mac as universally sufficient.

Apple Watch: price the watch as part of a phone-centered setup
Apple Watch SE 3 starts at $249 and Apple Watch Series 11 at $399. The $150 difference is worth considering only against functions you will actually use. Include the band, desired case or connectivity choice, and the fact that the watch works as a companion to an iPhone when calculating value.
Ways to make the budget go further
Trade-in credits
Apple advertises trade-in credits for eligible devices. The amount depends on the device, condition, eligibility and the offer available when you apply. Treat a trade-in as a conditional reduction, not as a guaranteed discount. Get the estimate, read what happens if the inspection differs from your description, and keep enough cash to complete the purchase if the final value changes.
Carrier promotions
Carrier deals can reduce an iPhone’s effective cost, often subject to a specific plan, activation, installment period or account eligibility. Compare the total required payments and service commitment with Apple’s unlocked price. A promotion that lowers the device installments can still cost more when the required plan is more expensive than your current service.
Apple Card Monthly Installments
Apple says eligible Apple Card Monthly Installments offer 0% APR. Its financing page lists these category starting points: iPhone from $699 over 24 months, Mac from $699 over 12 months, Apple Watch from $249 over 12 months and iPad from $449 over 12 months. Approval and account terms apply, and a monthly payment changes timing rather than the purchase’s total price.
| Category example | Starting price used | Term shown by Apple | Simple price ÷ term estimate |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone | $699 | 24 months | About $29.13 per month before tax or other charges |
| Mac | $699 | 12 months | About $58.25 per month before tax or other charges |
| Apple Watch | $249 | 12 months | About $20.75 per month before tax or other charges |
| iPad | $449 | 12 months | About $37.42 per month before tax or other charges |
Those calculations use the listed starting prices and divide them by the stated term; they are not a guarantee of your approved payment. Before accepting financing, confirm the exact total, taxes, eligibility, and whether accessories are included.
Certified refurbished products
Apple’s Certified Refurbished program says products receive full functional testing and a one-year warranty, and it advertises savings of up to 15%. The catalog observed in 2026 listed a refurbished iPhone 16 with 128GB at $659. That is $140 below the $799 listed starting price for a new iPhone 16, but inventory and prices can change.
Refurbished is most useful when the exact model and storage meet your needs and the item is available from Apple’s certified catalog. Confirm the condition, included equipment, warranty terms and return policy at checkout. Do not assume every older model or third-party listing has the same testing or warranty.

Education pricing and limited-time offers
Apple’s iPad shopping page lists education pricing and a limited-time education offer. Eligibility, dates and availability can change, so verify the live terms before including the discount in your budget. Do not count an offer you cannot document at checkout.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A step-by-step buying method
- Write the job in one sentence. For example: “I need desktop software for school,” “I need a portable reading and note-taking screen,” or “I need notifications on my wrist.”
- Choose one category. Start with iPhone, iPad, Mac or Watch based on that job. Only add a second device after the first requirement is funded.
- Set two ceilings. Record your maximum device price and your maximum all-in price, including tax, accessories, connectivity and coverage.
- Pick the minimum acceptable configuration. Specify storage, size, connectivity and essential accessories before looking at promotions.
- Use the current starting price as a floor. If the required configuration exceeds your ceiling, change the category, choose a certified refurbished option, or postpone the purchase rather than pretending the base model will suffice.
- Compare two or three suitable models within the category. Check task support, configured price, portability, screen needs, battery expectations, storage and connectivity. Avoid comparing an iPad’s price with an iPhone’s price as if they were alternatives for the same job.
- Check savings in a fixed order. Get a trade-in estimate, inspect carrier requirements, check verified education eligibility, and then review financing. Keep the undiscounted total visible while doing this.
- Calculate the total amount paid. Add the device, tax, required accessories and any service commitment. For financing, multiply the approved payment by the number of payments and include upfront charges.
- Verify live availability and terms. Apple’s lineup, inventory, carrier credits, trade-in values and promotional offers are volatile. Recheck the product page immediately before ordering.
Budget scenarios that avoid common mistakes
Up to about $300
The current Apple US starting point in this range is Apple Watch SE 3 at $249. It is appropriate only if your main goal is a companion watch and you already have a compatible iPhone relationship. A new iPhone, iPad or Mac is not represented by the current listed starting prices at this ceiling.
Recommended Free Tools
$449 to $698
This range reaches the base iPad at $449 and, at the top, the MacBook Neo and iPhone 17e at $699. Decide whether you need a touch-first tablet, a phone or desktop software; the devices solve different problems. A certified refurbished iPhone 16 128GB was listed at $659, subject to stock changes, creating another phone option near the upper end.
$699 to $898
You can consider iPhone 17e, iPhone 16, iPhone 17, MacBook Neo, iPad mini or iPad Air depending on the exact ceiling. At this point, storage, accessories and tax can push a nominally qualifying model over budget, so use configured totals rather than the headline price.
$899 to about $1,200
This reaches iPhone 17, iPhone Air, iPhone 18 Pro, iPad Pro and the lower end of the higher-priced categories. Spend the difference only when a feature or workflow requirement is explicit. A higher tier bought for an unneeded capability is not a saving.
More than $1,200
You can evaluate premium configurations, including MacBook Air from $1,299 and iPhone Duo from $1,999. At this level, the risk shifts from underbuying to paying for capacity or form factors you will not use. Compare the configured model with a lower tier plus the accessories you actually need.
Pitfalls and how to correct them
Using a monthly payment as the budget
A small installment can hide a large total and a long commitment. Correct this by writing the cash price and the total of all scheduled payments beside the monthly figure.

Assuming “starting at” is your final price
The base configuration may not include the storage, cellular option or accessories your work requires. Correct this by configuring the device before comparing it with alternatives.
Counting an unconfirmed promotion
Trade-in, carrier and education offers have eligibility rules and can change. Correct this by using the offer only after Apple or the carrier confirms your exact device, account and dates.
Comparing unlike categories
A low-priced Watch, iPad or iPhone is not a cheaper version of a Mac. Correct this by returning to the one-sentence job statement and choosing the category that can perform it.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Ignoring refurbished inventory changes
A certified refurbished model can be excellent value, but a specific storage or color may disappear. Correct this by checking current stock and having a new-model alternative that still fits your ceiling.
Leaving recurring costs out
Cellular service, protection and required accessories can change the ownership cost. Correct this by placing one-time and recurring costs in separate lines of your budget.
When to recheck the numbers
Refresh the prices immediately before publication or purchase. Apple can change the lineup, starting prices, trade-in estimates, carrier promotions, financing terms and refurbished inventory. The figures in this guide describe Apple’s US storefront as observed in 2026; they are not a guarantee for another country, a later date or a different tax jurisdiction.
The durable method is simple: identify the task, select the correct device category, configure the minimum model that does the job, calculate the all-in total, and treat every discount or financing offer as conditional until verified.
