Before you search for a 25-character code, check whether your copy of Windows 10 needs one. A device activated with a digital license has no key you must enter, so there may be nothing to retrieve. If you do need a key, where it sits depends on how you got Windows: the PC and its Certificate of Authenticity, the box, a retailer email or digital locker, a Microsoft order record, or a volume-licensing portal.
Check activation status first
Microsoft’s activation page tells you whether Windows is already licensed, and that answer decides whether the search is necessary.
- Select Start, then select Settings (the gear icon).
- Select Update & Security, then select Activation.
- Read the status line. If it says Windows is activated with a digital license, you can reinstall the same edition later without typing a key. If it is activated and no digital license is named, your activation came from a product key, so continue to the route table below.

A Windows product key is a 25-character code arranged in five groups of five characters, in the pattern XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX. Microsoft uses this format to describe the key it refers to on its support pages. Anything shorter or longer is not a Windows product key.

Where to find the key, by how you got Windows
Microsoft ties the key’s location to the purchase route. The table below lists the common routes and what each one gives you.

The product key page is at Find your Windows product key. If you bought a boxed or digital copy, buy only from an authorized retailer, because a key from an unknown seller may not activate.

Why a digital license may show no key
Microsoft’s support page defines the situation plainly: “A digital license is a method of activation in Windows 10 and Windows 11 that doesn’t require you to enter a product key.” A missing key is therefore not a sign of a problem when the activation page confirms a digital license. Do not buy another key for a device that is already licensed.

Reinstalling a previously activated PC
Reinstalling a device with a digital license is the case where the key question usually disappears. Microsoft’s reinstall guidance is at Reinstall Windows with the installation media.

- Confirm the installed edition. Select Start > Settings > System > About and read the Edition line under Windows specifications.
- Create installation media and boot from it. Choose the same edition you noted in step 1, such as Home to Home or Pro to Pro.
- When setup asks for a product key, select I don’t have a product key.
- Finish setup and connect to the internet. Windows can activate online after installation.
When activation fails after a major hardware change
A significant hardware change, such as replacing the motherboard, can interrupt activation because the device may no longer match the license. Linking the digital license to a Microsoft account before a repair gives you a way to reactivate afterwards.
- Confirm the license is linked. Open Settings > Update & Security > Activation and check for a linked Microsoft account.
- Run the troubleshooter. Select Start > Settings > Update & Security > Activation > Troubleshoot. Microsoft’s guide is Using the Windows Activation troubleshooter.
- If an error code remains, use Microsoft’s Get help with Windows activation errors page to match the error to its fix.
- If no key, no digital license and no purchase record exist, Microsoft’s activation page describes buying a Windows digital license through the Microsoft Store. Work through every route above before buying.
Methods that do not reliably reveal a usable license
- Microsoft’s guidance does not validate BIOS or firmware commands, or third-party key-finder tools, as ways to reveal a usable, transferable license. Treat any such result with caution.
- A key displayed on screen is not proof that you own a transferable retail license. Check the purchase record for the copy.
- Activation does not depend on a key being visible in the interface. A digital-license device can be fully activated with no key on screen.
