In WordPress Admin, open WooCommerce > Orders, search for the order, and select its order number or customer name. The resulting Edit Order screen contains an Order details panel with the customer-facing order number and other transaction information. If a developer or support agent specifically asks for the internal order ID, inspect the order URL for the value used in /view-order/{ORDER_ID} or /order-pay/{ORDER_ID}, or retrieve the REST API id field. WooCommerce treats that internal ID and the displayed order number as separate values, so they may not match.
What you need before looking up an order
The documented WordPress Admin workflow requires an account with the Administrator or Shop Manager role. If you can sign in but do not see the Orders screen, your account may not have one of those permissions, or a site-specific role may have restricted order access.
- Sign in to the WordPress dashboard for the store.
- Use an Administrator or Shop Manager account for the standard WooCommerce order workflow.
- Have at least one search clue ready, such as the order number, customer name, date, status, or another value visible in the Orders table.
Open the WooCommerce order details page
- In WordPress Admin, select WooCommerce in the left-hand menu, then select Orders.
- Review the orders table. The default Order column shows the order number and customer name, making either value a useful starting point.
- If the list is long, use the search box in the upper-right. Enter the order number, customer name, or another value displayed in the table, then select Search orders or press Enter.
- Select the order number or the customer name in the matching row. WooCommerce opens the single-order Edit Order screen.
- At the top of that screen, locate the Order details panel. This is the fastest place to confirm the visible order number and inspect the rest of the transaction record.
The navigation path is therefore WordPress Admin > WooCommerce > Orders > select an order. You do not need to open a separate customer profile to reach the order details page.
What the Order details panel contains
The panel identifies the order and records the information normally needed to investigate fulfillment, payment, or checkout questions. Depending on the store configuration, it includes:

- Order number: the number displayed to staff and commonly used in customer communications.
- Payment details: information associated with the payment record.
- Order date and time: when WooCommerce recorded the order.
- Status: the current state of the order.
- Username and email: the account and contact information associated with the order.
- Billing details: the billing address and related billing information.
- Shipping details: the shipping address and related delivery information.
If someone asks for “the order number” or wants you to identify a purchase for a customer, the value in this panel is usually the value they expect. If they ask for “the internal order ID,” do not assume the same number is sufficient; use the URL or API method described below.
Order ID versus order number: the distinction that matters
WooCommerce documents an internal id property and a separate number property for an order. The number is the visible, customer-facing identifier shown in the admin order list and Order details panel. The ID is an internal identifier used by WooCommerce’s URL and API conventions.
On a default store, the two values can sometimes look identical or appear to increase together. That visual similarity is not a guarantee that they are interchangeable. A custom order-numbering extension can change the displayed number while leaving the underlying internal ID unchanged. An integration that needs the database or API identifier should therefore store the API id separately from the visible order number.

For a support conversation, ask which identifier the other person needs. “Order 10457,” for example, normally means the visible order number. A developer debugging a request may instead need the API id. Supplying the wrong one can make a valid order appear missing in an integration even though it is present in the admin list.

Find the internal ID in the WooCommerce URL
WooCommerce’s documented customer-order URL patterns use an {ORDER_ID} value:
/view-order/{ORDER_ID}/order-pay/{ORDER_ID}
When you have an order URL containing one of these routes, inspect the value in the position represented by {ORDER_ID}. That value is the internal order identifier used by the route, not necessarily the customer-facing number shown in the Order details panel.

How to inspect the value
- Open the relevant order or payment page in the browser.
- Click the address bar and read the full path, not just the page title.
- Locate the integer occupying the
{ORDER_ID}position afterview-orderororder-pay. - Copy the value exactly, without adding spaces or punctuation.
- Compare it with the order number in the admin panel only as a verification step; do not overwrite one with the other.
An integer in the URL that does not match the visible order number is not automatically an error. The documented separation between id and number makes that outcome possible and expected on stores that use custom numbering.
Get the ID from REST API output
For an integration, automation, or developer handoff, the REST API response is the clearest source for the internal value. WooCommerce’s order schema exposes both id and number. Use the id field when the receiving system explicitly requests the internal order ID, and preserve the number field for customer-facing references.

Do not infer the API id by stripping characters from a formatted order number. Retrieve the field from the API response or read the documented URL value.
Search when you do not know the order number
The Orders table can be searched using information displayed in that table. Start with the customer’s name if the number is unavailable. If that returns too many rows, refine the query with the date or status shown by the order list.

- Go to WooCommerce > Orders.
- Enter the customer name, order number, or another visible table value in the upper-right search box.
- Select Search orders or press Enter.
- Open the matching row by selecting its order number or customer name.
Use date, customer, and status filters
If a search returns no obvious match, check the filters on the Orders overview. WooCommerce’s order-management guidance documents filtering by month, customer, and status. A date or status filter can hide the order you expect to see, so clear or broaden those filters before concluding that the order does not exist.
- Check the month or date range that contains the checkout attempt.
- Check whether the current status filter excludes the order’s status.
- Try the customer filter when several orders have similar numbers or names.
- Search again after changing one filter at a time so you know which setting affected the result.
Troubleshoot a missing order
The Orders menu or order list is unavailable
Confirm that you are signed in to the correct WordPress site and that your account has Administrator or Shop Manager access. The documented workflow is based on those roles. If your account is intentionally restricted, ask a store administrator to look up the order rather than attempting to bypass the permission boundary.

The order is not in the current list
Review the month, customer, and status filters, then search by another value visible in the table. An order can be absent from the current view because the list is filtered, not because WooCommerce deleted it.
The URL number and panel number are different
Keep both values and label them clearly. The panel’s value is the order number; the URL’s {ORDER_ID} value follows the internal URL convention. WooCommerce’s API likewise exposes separate id and number properties, so a mismatch alone does not prove that the order is corrupt.
A payment or checkout attempt failed
When escalating a payment or checkout problem, record the order number, current status, time of the attempt, and the checkout message. These details are the recommended starting information for troubleshooting. Include the internal ID only when the payment provider, developer, or support workflow asks for it.
A customer supplied a number that does not search
Ask whether the number came from a receipt, customer account page, payment link, or an administrator. Customer-facing references normally correspond to the visible order number, while a developer may have copied an internal ID from a URL or API response. Search using the customer name and date, open the matching order, and then report both values with explicit labels if necessary.

How to report the identifiers without confusion
Use descriptive labels in tickets, spreadsheets, and integration notes. A concise record can look like this:
Order number: 10457
Internal order ID: 8921
Status: [current status shown in WooCommerce]
Attempt time: [time recorded for the checkout attempt]The numbers in that example are illustrative labels, not a claim about a particular store. The important practice is to keep the customer-facing order number and internal ID in separate fields. If only one value is available, state where it came from—for example, “number shown in Order details” or “id returned by the API.”
For customer-facing communication
Use the visible order number from the Order details panel. It is the identifier a customer is most likely to recognize from a confirmation message or account page. Do not expose an internal ID unless the customer’s support process specifically requires it.
For developers and integrations
Send the API id when the receiving system requests an internal identifier, and include the number as a separate field for human reference. If you obtained the value from a URL, mention whether the route was /view-order/ or /order-pay/ so the recipient knows how it was identified.
Quick verification checklist

- Did you open the row by selecting the order number or customer name?
- Did you read the order number from the Order details panel?
- Did you confirm whether the request is for the visible

Bottom line for finding a WooCommerce order ID
Use WooCommerce > Orders to locate and open the order details page. The panel gives you the visible order number and transaction context. When the request is specifically for the internal ID, read the value used by the documented /view-order/{ORDER_ID} or /order-pay/{ORDER_ID} route, or use the REST API’s id field. Keep that ID separate from the API number and the customer-facing order number because WooCommerce documents them as distinct values.
