Kodi does not have an official, verified ranking of 50 best video add-ons. Its catalog is a directory, and an add-on’s usefulness depends on the Kodi version you run, the service it connects to, and whether that service is available where you live. Use Kodi’s official repository first, then check the add-on’s source, compatibility and service terms before installing it.
What Kodi add-ons do—and does Kodi come with movies?
Kodi is media-player software, not a streaming service. It can play media files stored on your device or local network, while add-ons extend its functions. Some video add-ons connect to internet content, but Kodi itself does not provide movies, shows or streaming subscriptions. The Official Kodi Wiki’s Free content page states: “Kodi does not provide any video content or video streaming services.”
Add-ons serve different purposes. Kodi’s official add-on catalog separates categories such as video, music, programs, services and subtitles. Choose by task: a video add-on is not necessarily a general-purpose movie library, and a subtitle or program add-on is not a video source.
Why a “50 best Kodi addons” list can mislead
A catalog entry does not prove that an add-on still works with your Kodi release, reaches a particular service in your country, or is authorized to provide the content it exposes. Nor does being listed make an add-on a quality pick: the official catalog is not a ranking by reliability or popularity.

Compatibility is release-specific. The official catalog pages linked here include an Omega add-ons page for Kodi 21, while Kodi organizes its official repository around compatible releases. Check the catalog and repository for the Kodi version actually installed on your device rather than assuming an add-on will work on every release, including Kodi 22 Piers.

- Purpose and source: Identify the service or content provider the add-on connects to. A name or description alone is not enough to establish what it currently plays.
- Kodi compatibility: Confirm the stated release compatibility against your installed version.
- Location: Check the provider’s own documentation for geographic availability. A catalog listing does not establish that a service works in your region.
- Repository and maintainer: Find out who publishes the add-on and whether it comes from Kodi’s official repository or an external one.
- Maintenance: Look for a recent update or current documentation from the maintainer. Availability in a directory is not proof of active maintenance.
- Access requirements: Check whether you need an account, a separate subscription or another service’s credentials.
- Authorization: Confirm that the provider is permitted to offer the content where you are. Availability through an add-on is not the same as authorization.
How to install Kodi add-ons from the official repository
When a suitable option is available, the built-in add-on browser and Kodi’s official repository are the safer starting points. The repository is included by default, maintained by Team Kodi and organized around compatible Kodi releases. Labels can vary by Kodi version or skin, but the general route is through the add-on browser to the official repository and the relevant category.

- Open the add-on browser. From Kodi’s add-ons area, open the browser or install-from-repository option. The exact label and navigation can differ by version or skin.
- Select the official repository. Browse to the category that matches your task, such as video add-ons, and open a candidate’s details.
- Review before installing. Check the description, maintainer, compatibility information and any account or service requirements. If those details do not answer your questions, consult the provider’s own documentation.
- Install and test the intended function. Confirm that the add-on appears in Kodi and that its service works for your account, region and device. A successful installation by itself does not confirm content availability or authorization.
Kodi also allows manual ZIP installation, but its guidance says users must verify compatibility themselves. Use a ZIP only when you can identify and trust its source and confirm that it matches your Kodi release; avoid installers that conceal which repositories or add-ons they add. Are Kodi add-ons safe?
No source is a guarantee of safety. Team Kodi maintains and reviews submissions to its official repository, but Kodi says that review is not foolproof. External repositories may follow different standards—or offer no equivalent review. Kodi warns that third-party add-ons can pose risks such as unwanted code, file deletion or collection of personal information; those are general cautions, not proof against a particular add-on.
Before installing from outside the official repository, identify the maintainer and the source, read its documentation, and consider whether it asks for permissions or access that make sense for its stated purpose. Avoid packages from sources you cannot verify. Kodi’s full warning is available in its notice about additional add-ons.
Kodi also warns that some sellers bundle unsupported bootleg add-ons. Team Kodi says such add-ons and services are not endorsed, encouraged or supported. To access a streaming service, look for that provider’s own authorized Kodi extension or use its official service options. A VPN does not make an add-on legal, secure or reliable.

Which Kodi add-ons still work?
There is no answer that applies to every device, release and region. Check the add-on against the Kodi version you use, then confirm service availability with the provider and check for current maintainer documentation. If it is in an external repository, assess that repository separately; a working installation does not establish the source’s trustworthiness or the content’s authorization.

If an add-on stops working, first check for a Kodi or add-on update and review the provider’s service status and regional terms. If compatibility or the maintainer cannot be verified, remove the add-on and use the provider’s authorized alternative rather than relying on an unexplained ZIP or installer.
What about Kodi boxes and remote controls?
A remote control is optional; it is an input accessory for Kodi’s television-oriented interface, not a requirement of the software. Check that a remote works with the specific device running Kodi before buying one. Kodi does not endorse one hardware option over another, and the Kodi Foundation says it does not sell hardware. A box advertised as preloaded with Kodi or add-ons is not necessarily sold or supported by Kodi; verify the seller and what is installed.
