To find tech work in Leeds, start with a role family and the live vacancy requirements, then build evidence that matches them. Leeds City Council offers digital apprenticeship and graduate routes, while its jobs and skills directory points to job-search, training and application support. These are useful local starting points, not a complete list of employers or a guarantee that a role is currently open.

Choose a technology role family

“Tech job” can mean anything from helping people use devices to designing software or analysing data. Leeds City Council’s Integrated Digital Service describes work spanning support, technology, data, cybersecurity, information governance, digital change and strategy. Its examples range from IT support to enterprise architecture, software development and data science. That is evidence of variety within one large public-sector digital team, not a census of Leeds employers.

Use role families to narrow your search, then compare the actual duties and essential criteria in current adverts. Titles can vary between employers.

  • IT and service support: helping users resolve device, account or service problems.
  • Software development and testing: building or checking digital services.
  • Data: working with data analysis or data science.
  • Business analysis and digital change: understanding needs and helping services change.
  • Infrastructure and platforms: areas such as cloud, networks, DevOps and digital workplace.
  • Security and governance: cybersecurity and information governance.

These categories reflect the role areas named by the council; they do not imply that every specialism has a current Leeds vacancy.

Compare the main local routes into digital work

Route Who it may suit What the council describes What to check
IT Talent Management Programme apprenticeship Applicants seeking paid work-based learning; the programme page says years of experience are not required. Two-year Level 4 apprenticeships combining work and formal training. Listed specialisms for the expected 2026 cohort were AI and automation, business analysis, data analysis, software development and software testing. The 2026 application and start dates have passed. Check the council recruitment platform for an open vacancy or a later cohort, and confirm the advert’s eligibility and requirements.
IT Talent Management Programme graduate route Applicants with a bachelor’s degree or higher. The expected September 2026 cohort listed AI and automation, DevOps, digital workplace and networks. The cohort details were subject to confirmation and the stated start date has passed. Verify whether a later cohort or current role is advertised.
Other council apprenticeships Applicants interested in paid work and funded study across different occupational areas, including digital roles. The council describes qualifications from Level 2 to Level 6; opportunities vary with service need. The council’s general conditions say applicants must be at least 16, live in England, not be in full-time education while undertaking the apprenticeship, and meet council values and behaviours. Confirm the specific vacancy’s criteria.
Direct vacancies Applicants whose experience, skills or qualifications match a live advert. The Integrated Digital Service profile describes a broad range of functions, but does not establish a current vacancy list. Check each employer’s live advert for essential criteria, location, working arrangements, hours, pay and any right-to-work conditions.

The council says successful apprentices may be able to move into a permanent role where a suitable opportunity exists. That is conditional, not a guaranteed outcome. The apprenticeship route combines paid work and study; compare the commitment and requirements with a graduate or direct vacancy before applying.

Find live vacancies and local support

Use Leeds City Council’s jobs and skills directory as a starting point. It signposts council vacancies, apprenticeship support, the Leeds Employment Hub for job or training help, the Leeds Learning Hub for courses, Jobshops for application support, and weekly job and apprenticeship alerts. The council says Jobshops can help with CVs, application forms and interviews. Check the relevant service page for current availability and eligibility.

Search more broadly than one council programme: use employer career pages and current vacancy adverts to see which role families are hiring and what evidence they ask for. The local sources here do not establish a comprehensive live vacancy count, salary range or hiring-growth figure, so rely on current adverts for those details.

Build evidence that matches the advert

Start with the essential criteria, not a generic list of technologies. The council advises applicants for its digital programme to check eligibility, gather relevant documents such as a CV and academic certificates, and identify skills, qualifications, experience and digital projects to highlight. Its process is online; shortlisting is against essential requirements, and shortlisted candidates are invited to an in-person group assessment and interview.

Examples of useful evidence depend on the role and are suggestions, not official guaranteed selection criteria:

  • Development: show a relevant project and explain what you built, your contribution and the decisions you made.
  • Data: describe a data task, the approach you took and how you communicated what you found.
  • Testing: explain how you checked a service systematically, recorded issues or considered different user actions.
  • Business analysis: give an example of clarifying a problem, understanding needs or communicating a proposed change.
  • Support: describe how you diagnosed a problem and helped someone resolve it clearly and patiently.

For each application, make the connection explicit: name the relevant experience or project and explain how it meets the stated criterion. Do not assume a project, qualification or skill is required unless the advert says so.

Use Leeds context without mistaking plans for vacancies

Leeds City Council’s 2026–2030 plan identifies Digital and Tech as a major growth sector. It says the council will work with the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, education providers and business partners to align skills and training with employer needs, and describes plans for digital-skills provision in community venues through 100% Digital Leeds. These are strategic commitments, not confirmation that a particular course, training place or job is available now.

The council plan describes Leeds as having around 812,000 residents, citing ONS 2023, and a £36 billion economy; it gives the wider city-region population as 2.3 million. Those figures provide context for the scale of the place, but they do not predict an individual’s job prospects.

Meet employers and explore opportunities

Leeds City Council announced a Careers in Leeds fair for Tuesday 3 November 2026, including a Digital zone. The announcement also describes a support zone with tailored opportunities for people with SEND and a quiet period. The date is upcoming as of 4 October 2026; check the event page for current attendance details or changes before making plans.

The council announcement presents the event as bringing employers together and describes the Leeds Apprenticeship Fair as having grown to be the largest in the North. Those are statements by the council, not independently established rankings or guarantees of what an attendee will find. Treat the fair as one opportunity to ask employers about roles, training and application timelines, alongside checking live vacancy pages.

Think about progression as well as entry

The council’s Integrated Digital Service profile says it has 600 staff and supports the council as well as providing IT services for NHS partners at the Leeds Integrated Care Board. Its areas include strategy and innovation, digital change, cloud and platform, programmes and portfolio, business services, technology, information governance and cybersecurity, and data analytics. This illustrates possible breadth within that service; it does not establish the size or structure of Leeds’s wider technology sector.

A council employee profile offers one example of movement between roles: Michal, a Service Centre Team Leader, says he started on the service desk and later moved into assistive technology work. His account shows one person’s path, not a typical or promised progression route. When weighing an opportunity, look for the development and next-step possibilities described in the specific advert or programme, rather than assuming that an entry role leads to a particular promotion.

A practical search sequence

  1. Pick one or two role families. Use the duties you want to do—not just a broad search for “tech”—to focus your search.
  2. Compare current adverts. Record each role’s essential criteria, qualifications, location, hours, pay, working arrangements and application stages.
  3. Choose a route that fits. Compare apprenticeship, graduate and direct-vacancy requirements, and check whether a programme or cohort is actually open.
  4. Prepare relevant evidence. Tailor your CV and examples to the advert’s criteria; gather documents the application asks for.
  5. Get help if useful. Check the council directory for Jobshops, employment or learning support and confirm current service details.
  6. Apply and follow the stated process. For the council digital programme, the published process includes online application, shortlisting against essential requirements, then an in-person group assessment and interview for shortlisted applicants.
