For startup funding in Manchester, begin with the GM Business Growth Hub’s Access to Finance team and its regularly updated funding roundup. The available routes include repayable loans, equity investment and narrowly targeted or sector-specific grants—not a single general startup grant. Free library and Business & Intellectual Property Centre support can help you prepare, but it is not itself funding.
Start by matching the funding to what your business needs
Before looking at individual schemes, define the amount you need, what you will spend it on, when you need it, where the business operates, its trading age and sector, and whether you can take on repayments or give up equity. These details help distinguish a grant competition from a loan or investment opportunity.
- Grant or award: May support a defined project or eligible founder, but eligibility, costs and deadlines depend on the specific call.
- Loan: Must be repaid. Check the lender’s current interest rate, fees, repayment schedule, security and personal liability before proceeding.
- Equity: Investment in exchange for ownership; assess the investor’s terms and the share of the business involved.
The Growth Hub roundup is a shortlist, not a determination that your business qualifies. Check the current programme guidance before applying.

Where to look for Greater Manchester funding
GM Business Growth Hub Access to Finance
The Access to Finance team helps Greater Manchester businesses explore funding options, improve investment readiness and connect with finance providers. Its roundup was updated on 22 September 2026; use it to identify possible routes, then follow the links to confirm current terms and application status.
#1 Best Overall
Start Up Loans for early-stage businesses
The roundup lists Start Up Loans of £500–£25,000 for aspiring entrepreneurs and businesses trading for less than five years, with local delivery by GC Business Finance Start Ups. Successful applicants receive 12 months of mentoring and ongoing support, according to the roundup. This is a repayable loan, not a grant; check current interest, fees, eligibility and repayment conditions with the provider.
NPIF II Smaller Loans
NPIF II Smaller Loans are listed at £25,000–£100,000 for North of England SMEs, delivered locally by GC Business Finance. The roundup gives equipment, expansion, recruitment and cash flow as example uses. This route is aimed at businesses seeking growth finance; confirm current criteria, rates, repayment terms and geographic rules with the lender.
Rank #2
GC Angels early-stage equity
GC Angels Early Stage Equity typically invests £25,000–£2 million in innovative, scalable Greater Manchester businesses, according to the Growth Hub. It is selective equity investment, not a grant or guaranteed offer. Review the current investment mandate, eligibility, due diligence process and ownership terms.
Grants and awards are often specific to a project or founder
Innovation competitions
The Growth Hub’s 22 September 2026 roundup listed the following calls, each with its own eligibility and project requirements. The stated deadlines below are those reported in that roundup; verify live status, closing time, applicant rules, eligible costs and any match-funding requirements on the linked competition page.
Rank #3

These are specialist opportunities, not general-purpose startup grants. The relevant call’s official guidance—not the headline amount—determines who can apply and what a successful project may claim.

Use free local support to prepare
Manchester City Council’s 3 August 2026 bulletin describes Build a Business in GM Libraries as operating across all ten Greater Manchester authorities. It offers workshops, one-to-one support from a local Enterprise Officer, business research resources and intellectual-property guidance. The council says library cards are free for UK residents.
The bulletin also describes BIPC Greater Manchester, based at Manchester Central Library and local centres, with one-to-one clinics, workshops, webinars, events and free access to a podcast studio and 3D printer. These are research and business-preparation resources, not funding awards. Check the council’s current information for access and appointment availability.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical application sequence
- Set out the need. Record the amount, purpose, timing, business location, trading age and sector, and whether debt or equity is acceptable.
- Get local guidance. Ask the Growth Hub Access to Finance team to help identify relevant current routes and consider library or BIPC support for market, customer and IP research.
- Classify each opportunity. Establish whether it is a grant or award, repayable loan, or equity investment, and compare the consequences before applying.
- Read the live programme rules. Confirm eligibility, deadlines, eligible costs, lead-applicant requirements and match funding directly with the current official programme page.
- Prepare your case. Keep a funding plan, project budget, cash-flow forecast, evidence of customer need and deadline list together. Treat these as useful preparation, not requirements unless the specific application guidance says so.
- Check loan obligations with the lender. Establish the current interest, fees, repayment schedule, security and any personal liability before signing or submitting an application.
