In Minecraft Java Edition 26.3 and Bedrock Edition 26.50, Shelf Mushrooms generate on standing Poplar Trees and fallen Poplar Trees in the Dappled Forest. Look along trunks and logs, then break a mushroom to collect it. If you cannot find the biome, check Wandering Trader trades; a particular trader is not guaranteed to offer one.
Where Shelf Mushrooms generate
Find a Dappled Forest and inspect the sides of its Poplar trunks and fallen Poplar logs. The official Java Edition 26.3 notes say Dappled Forests can be found near cold biomes, which gives you a useful direction while exploring. The notes describe Shelf Mushrooms as growing on trees, not on the ground.
Mojang’s Java Edition 26.3 release notes and the Bedrock Edition 26.50 changelog both list the tree location and trader availability. These details are version-specific; later updates may change them.
How to collect one
- Explore until you reach a Dappled Forest. Search near cold biomes, as noted in the Java 26.3 release notes.
- Check the sides of standing Poplar Trees and fallen Poplar logs. Look closely around the bark rather than searching the forest floor.
- Break a Shelf Mushroom you find to collect it.
How to get more from a Shelf Mushroom
Shelf Mushrooms come in small and large sizes. Use Bone Meal on a small Shelf Mushroom to grow it into a large one; breaking the large form drops two Shelf Mushroom items, according to the official Java and Bedrock release notes.

The notes also say Shelf Mushrooms can be used like other mushrooms to make stews, but do not specify a recipe. They also mention a slight bounce, though that does not affect how you obtain the item.
Can a Wandering Trader sell Shelf Mushrooms?
Wandering Trader trades are an alternative if finding a Dappled Forest is taking too long. Check the trader’s available offers, but do not rely on every trader having a Shelf Mushroom in stock: the official notes list the trade route without guaranteeing an offer on each visit.
