In the U.S., start with your nearest American Job Center (AJC): call, explain when the factory layoff or closure is happening, and ask for a dislocated-worker appointment. The AJC can connect you with job-search help and explain whether you may qualify for retraining support. If the layoff is announced but you are still working, ask about Rapid Response now rather than waiting for your last day.

Where can I find free job placement help near me?

American Job Centers provide free employment assistance. CareerOneStop lists nearly 2,300 centers nationwide, a count accessed in 2026 that can change. Use its American Job Center locator to find a nearby location, then call to confirm hours, services, whether you need an appointment, and what to bring.

When you call, say that you were laid off—or expect to be laid off—from a factory and give the closure or layoff date if known. Ask for a dislocated-worker intake or appointment. Useful questions include:

  • Can I get help with job searching, career counseling, or a skills assessment?
  • Do you offer résumé or interview workshops, hiring events, or job-placement referrals?
  • What documents should I bring, and do I need to register before the appointment?
  • Who can explain training options and whether I may qualify for WIOA Dislocated Worker services?

Services vary by location, so the local center—not the national directory—can confirm what is available to you.

What should I do if the factory has announced a layoff?

Ask about Rapid Response before your last day

Contact your employer, union representative if you have one, or your state’s Rapid Response or Dislocated Worker Unit. Ask whether there will be an information session or on-site assistance. The U.S. Department of Labor says Rapid Response can connect affected workers with reemployment services, training information, unemployment-insurance information, and other benefits. As the department puts it, “Services, resources, and benefits vary from state to state.” Find the relevant Rapid Response information and ask what applies to this layoff.

Handle unemployment and transition questions at the same time

Ask your state unemployment office or the AJC how and when to file for unemployment insurance. During Rapid Response or your AJC appointment, ask where to get information about health coverage, pension matters, and other transition issues. Do not wait until you have chosen a training program to start these conversations.

Can I get job training paid for after a layoff?

Possibly. The federal Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) Dislocated Worker program is designed to help eligible people return to work after job loss, mass layoffs, trade impacts, and economic-sector transitions. Contact your AJC and ask how your state determines eligibility, which career and training services are available, what documentation is required, and whether funds are currently available. Eligibility and funding are not automatic, and the program does not promise tuition or income support to every displaced worker. See the Department of Labor’s Dislocated Worker program information.

Check both your eligibility and the training program

CareerOneStop directs people to state WIOA-eligible training directories and recommends contacting a local AJC if they are unsure about eligibility. Start with the WIOA-eligible training program directory guidance, then ask the AJC to confirm whether you personally qualify and whether the specific provider and program may be funded. A program’s appearance in a directory is not a guarantee that you will receive funding.

Compare training before enrolling

Ask the AJC and provider to verify these details before you commit:

  • Whether the program and provider are listed as WIOA-eligible, and whether you meet local eligibility rules.
  • Total tuition, fees, equipment, and transportation costs, plus which costs funding might cover.
  • Time to completion, schedule, and any prerequisites.
  • The credential or license earned and whether local employers recognize it.
  • Local job openings and wages for the occupation, and provider completion or placement information where available.

Compare the actual options available in your area; national information cannot establish which course is best for your circumstances.

Could Trade Adjustment Assistance apply?

If production moved abroad or imports may be connected to the job loss, ask Rapid Response or the AJC whether Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) could apply to the employer and affected workers. A trade connection alone does not make every worker eligible. The Department of Labor explains the program and worker eligibility at Trade Adjustment Assistance. TAA is distinct from WIOA Dislocated Worker services and Rapid Response; ask which routes may apply rather than assuming one program replaces another.

What other local job-search support can I use?

CareerOneStop also points workers to local job fairs and workshops, public libraries that may offer résumé assistance or computer access, and other Department of Labor employment programs. Check CareerOneStop local employment help and contact each location to confirm current services, dates, and any registration requirements.
