If you need a break from caregiving, start with a referral service rather than calling providers at random. In the United States, contact the Eldercare Locator online or at 800-677-1116, then ask your local Area Agency on Aging or Family Caregiver Support Program about respite, eligibility, cost and waiting lists. Those agencies can identify in-home help, adult day services, short-term facility stays and other local options. The right choice depends on the care recipient’s supervision needs, your schedule, transportation, language and accessibility requirements, and how the service will be paid for.

What respite care is and what it can include

Family Caregiver Alliance defines respite care as temporary relief from day-to-day caregiving tasks, lasting from a few hours to several weeks. The purpose is to give you time to sleep, work, attend appointments, handle errands or simply recover while someone else provides the agreed care.

Respite is not one standardized service. It may be arranged through a public program, a nonprofit, a private agency, a facility, a directly hired individual, or an unpaid helper. Availability, supervision levels, prices and eligibility vary by community.

Format Where care happens When it may fit Questions to resolve
In-home assistance The care recipient’s home You need coverage while remaining in the familiar setting Can the worker provide the required supervision or personal care? Are evenings, weekends and backup workers available?
Adult day services A licensed or organized daytime center You need several hours of daytime coverage and the person can travel safely to a center What transportation, activities, accessibility, meals and health support are offered? What happens if the person becomes ill?
Short stay in assisted living or a nursing facility A residential facility You need overnight or multi-day relief, or your home cannot safely support a temporary arrangement Does the facility accept respite stays, and can it meet medication, mobility, dementia or behavioral needs?
Directly hired individual Usually the home or another agreed location You want to select a particular person and set a custom schedule Who checks references, handles taxes and insurance, and provides a replacement during an absence?
Family, friends or volunteers Home, appointments or community activities You have a trusted network and the tasks can be clearly explained What training, boundaries, emergency instructions and backup plan are needed?

Some communities charge for private or nonprofit services; some offer volunteer help or subsidized places. A referral service can tell you which arrangements actually operate near you.

Start with a national or state referral service

Use the Eldercare Locator for a first call

The Administration for Community Living says the Eldercare Locator connects older adults, families and caregivers with local resources such as home care, transportation, caregiver training and education, meals and nutrition intervention, and respite support. Use eldercare.acl.gov or call or text 800-677-1116. Tell the specialist your county, the care recipient’s age, the type of help needed and when you need coverage.

The locator is a connection point, not a guarantee that a provider has an open place, accepts your payment source or can handle every care need. Ask for several local contacts and write down each program’s intake process, hours and next step.

Ask for your Area Agency on Aging or No Wrong Door entry point

Your local Area Agency on Aging can explain respite, caregiver education, counseling, support groups and other services. State and territory “No Wrong Door” systems provide entry points for older adults, people with disabilities, caregivers and families. The contact method is state-specific. For example, an Oregon ADRC number returned in the directory is 1-855-673-2372; that number is an Oregon example, not a national line.

Ask the agency to screen you for every relevant program, not only a service labeled “respite.” A caregiver program may help with training, counseling, a support group, information and assistance, or a referral to transportation that makes adult day care possible.

Contact the Family Caregiver Support Program

The National Family Caregiver Support Program funds states and territories to provide supports for family and informal caregivers of older adults. Local offerings can include respite, caregiver education, support groups, individual counseling and help accessing resources. The menu and eligibility rules are not uniform, so ask the local agency what is available in your area and whether there is an assessment or wait list.

Use specialized directories when they match your situation

  • ARCH National Respite Network: Family Caregiver Alliance and the Department of Veterans Affairs point caregivers to its respite locator and planning resources.
  • National Adult Day Services Association: Its directory can help you identify adult day programs, which you should then call to confirm schedules, transportation and capacity.
  • Veteran caregiver resources: The VA Geriatrics and Extended Care community-resources page links to the Eldercare Locator and ARCH. Use the VA directly to determine benefit eligibility rather than assuming a directory listing proves eligibility.
  • Disability and state organizations: State caregiver listings from Family Caregiver Alliance can reveal local organizations, but they are not a complete nationwide eligibility guide.

Prepare information before you call

Referral staff can work faster when you describe the care situation precisely. You do not need a clinical diagnosis to make the first call, but you should know what a helper must do and when coverage is required.

  • Care recipient: age, location, diagnoses that affect care, mobility, communication, continence, memory, behavior and ability to be left alone.
  • Tasks: supervision, bathing, dressing, toileting, transfers, meals, medication reminders, transportation, companionship or safety checks. Separate tasks that require a licensed professional from routine assistance.
  • Schedule: one-time appointment, recurring weekly blocks, overnight coverage, weekends, emergency backup or a planned multi-day break.
  • Environment: stairs, pets, smoking, mobility equipment, accessible bathroom, entrance requirements and any safety risks.
  • Your constraints: county or ZIP code, work hours, language, cultural preferences, transportation needs, maximum out-of-pocket amount and the date by which help is needed.
  • Funding: veteran status, disability programs, Medicaid or other public coverage, long-term-care insurance, employer benefits, grants or willingness to pay privately.

Keep a written care summary, medication list, emergency contacts and physician information ready for a provider. Share only what is needed during an initial inquiry, and use the provider’s secure intake process for sensitive records.

Factor What to ask Why it matters
Supervision and personal care Can staff manage wandering, transfers, toileting, feeding, medication reminders or challenging behavior? A service that offers companionship may not be equipped for hands-on or continuous supervision.
Staff qualifications Are workers employees, contractors or volunteers? What screening, orientation and training do they receive? The arrangement determines who supervises the worker and how concerns are handled.
Hours and reliability What are the minimum visit lengths, operating hours, cancellation rules and backup arrangements? A program that cannot cover your actual schedule will not provide dependable relief.
Location and transportation Is transportation included, optional or unavailable? Is the site accessible? Travel can erase the benefit of a daytime program if the person cannot get there safely.
Language and communication Can the provider communicate in the care recipient’s preferred language or offer interpretation? Clear instructions and consent depend on communication.
Emergency procedures Who is called for a fall, illness, missed pickup or unsafe behavior? How are incidents documented? You need to know what happens when the plan changes suddenly.
Cost and funding What is the total charge, including assessment, transportation, deposits, supplies, overtime and cancellation fees? Which programs or benefits may contribute? Local prices and subsidies differ; a quoted base rate may not be the final cost.
Capacity and wait time Can the provider accept a new client now, and how is the wait list managed? Availability can change faster than published directories.

Understand payment and eligibility before committing

Medicare is not a routine respite funding solution

Family Caregiver Alliance states that Medicare does not pay for long-term-care services such as in-home care and adult day services. That does not mean no medically skilled or short-term service can ever be relevant to a person’s Medicare coverage; it means you should not assume routine caregiver relief is covered. Ask the local agency and the specific benefit administrator about the service, duration and eligibility rules that apply to your situation.

Ask about public caregiver programs

Request a screening through your state or territory’s Family Caregiver Support Program and Area Agency on Aging. Ask whether the program serves the care recipient’s age group, whether income, relationship or care-level criteria apply, whether an assessment is required, and whether the program pays a provider directly or reimburses you. If funds are limited, ask how priority and wait-list decisions are made.

ACL’s 2024 caregiver resource fact sheet reported statewide Lifespan Respite Programs in 23 states. That is a dated fact-sheet count, not a verified total for 2026, so confirm current state participation through the relevant agency.

Consider other possible supports without assuming approval

Family Caregiver Alliance lists examples of supplemental supports that some programs may provide, including consumable supplies, emergency response systems and home modifications. These examples do not establish that a particular program will pay for them. Ask what the local program covers, whether it has a spending limit and what documentation is needed.

Veterans and people with disabilities may have additional routes

Veterans should contact the VA directly for benefit and service eligibility, then use the VA’s community-resources links to locate respite options. People with disabilities and their caregivers can ask the state No Wrong Door system about disability-specific programs. A directory referral alone does not establish eligibility for a benefit.

Vet a provider before the first visit

After a referral, speak with the provider’s intake person and, when possible, the actual supervisor. Ask these questions in one call and request written answers to costs and cancellation terms.

  1. What services do you provide, and which of my requested tasks are outside your scope?
  2. How do you assess the care recipient before accepting the case?
  3. Who will come to the home or supervise the center? Can I meet the person in advance?
  4. How are workers screened, trained and supervised?
  5. What happens if the assigned worker is sick, late or not a good fit?
  6. What are the minimum hours, recurring schedule, holiday policy and cancellation charges?
  7. How do you handle falls, medication concerns, wandering, abuse allegations or other emergencies?
  8. Can you provide references or a formal complaint process?
  9. What records, consent forms and emergency contacts do you require?
  10. What is the complete cost, and which funding sources do you bill or accept?

For a facility or adult day service, ask to tour the site during operating hours. Observe whether staff can explain the daily routine, how visitors are monitored, how accessibility is handled and where private information is stored. For in-home care, verify who employs the worker and who is responsible for payroll, taxes, insurance and replacement coverage.

  1. Define the break. Write the date, start and end time, location, tasks and the result that would make the break successful.
  2. Gather referrals. Call the Eldercare Locator or local agency, then contact at least two plausible programs or providers so you can compare capacity and terms.
  3. Share a care profile. Provide mobility, communication, behavioral, dietary, medication and emergency information relevant to the requested service.
  4. Confirm funding. Get the hourly, daily or session cost in writing; ask about transportation, assessments, deposits, cancellation fees and any public-program contribution.
  5. Arrange an introduction. Schedule a meeting or trial visit while you are present. Explain routines, hazards, preferences and what the helper should not do.
  6. Run a short trial. Begin with a limited block rather than an overnight or multi-day absence. Check how the care recipient responded and whether tasks were completed safely.
  7. Update the plan. Correct unclear instructions, add backup contacts and confirm the next visit before you leave.
  8. Review after the break. Ask what worked, what failed and whether the same worker or program can reliably cover future dates.

When the usual plan does not work

No provider has immediate capacity

Ask the referral agency for a wait-list date, another service format and a volunteer or short-term option. An adult day service may cover daytime hours while a friend or paid worker covers evenings. Recheck availability because openings and staffing change.

The care recipient refuses outside help

Start with a short visit framed around your appointment or errand, involve the person in choosing the helper and preserve familiar routines. A trial with you present can reveal whether the objection is to a particular task, person, time of day or location. If refusal creates an immediate safety risk, contact the appropriate medical or social-service professional.

The care needs exceed the service

Tell the agency exactly what changed. Ask whether a higher-supervision worker, adult day health program, short-term facility stay or clinical assessment is appropriate. Do not ask an unqualified volunteer or companion to perform lifting, medication administration or other tasks they cannot safely provide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The cost is unaffordable

Ask the Area Agency on Aging or Family Caregiver Support Program about subsidized respite, volunteer services, support groups, counseling and other assistance. Ask providers whether they have sliding-scale places, minimum-hour rules or nonprofit partners. Confirm every payment decision directly; a general directory does not promise funding.

You live far away

Use the local agency in the care recipient’s ZIP code, not only the agency where you live. Ask for a home-safety assessment, transportation information, an emergency contact process and a written schedule that a nearby person can verify. Keep copies of the care plan and provider contacts in a shared, secure location.

Build support beyond a single respite visit

Respite works best as part of a support plan. Ask the same local agency about caregiver training, individual counseling and support groups, because learning safe transfers, communication strategies or behavior-management techniques can make daily care more manageable. Arrange a backup person for missed visits and identify who can authorize emergency decisions when you cannot be reached.

Reassess after a hospitalization, fall, new diagnosis, change in mobility, new wandering behavior or a major change in your work schedule. A service that was adequate for two hours of companionship may no longer be suitable when supervision or personal care needs increase.
