For a dependable answer on whether an NFL running back is playing, check sources in this order: the official NFL injury report, a current fantasy roundup for lineup context, then the NFL inactive report near the 90-minute pregame window. A weekly injury designation is not the final game-day inactive decision, so refresh close to kickoff.
Where to check a running back’s injury status
- Start with the NFL injury report. Find the player’s current team and the correct week and game. The NFL.com page lists the club, player, position, injury, practice status, and game status. The live page showed 2026 Week 4 information when checked, so confirm that you are viewing the current week.
- Use fantasy coverage for lineup context. A dated, current roundup can explain potential workload changes, replacement options, and fantasy implications. Check its publication or update time, week, team, and injury against the official NFL report. ESPN Fantasy’s Week 1 2026 roundup, dated September 11, 2026, said Sunday inactive coverage begins around 90 minutes before scheduled kickoffs. This is editorial context, not the official status record.
- Check the NFL inactive list on game day. Use the official inactive report as the final public roster confirmation. Recheck near kickoff in case an update appears.
How to interpret the injury report
Practice participation and game status are separate pieces of information. The NFL’s injury-report policy lists practice participation as Did Not Participate, Limited Participation, or Full Participation. Those labels describe practice work; none by itself guarantees that the player will be active for the game.
The game-status labels describe expected availability:
- Questionable: It is uncertain whether the player will participate. It does not mean the player is confirmed active or inactive.
- Doubtful: The player is unlikely to participate, but check the game-day inactive list for the final confirmation.
- Out: The policy defines this as the player will not play.
When NFL inactive reports come out
NFL Football Operations places the exchange of the club’s inactive list at the 90-minute pregame meeting. ESPN Fantasy describes Sunday inactive updates as beginning around 90 minutes before scheduled kickoffs. Treat that as a practical window for your final check, not a guarantee that every website updates at one exact second.

The weekly schedule depends on game day. For the 2026–27 season, the NFL’s important dates calendar says practice reports are due by 4 p.m. New York time, or as soon as possible after practice, on listed practice days. For Sunday games, those days are Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday; the weekly game-status report is due Friday by 4 p.m. New York time or as soon as possible after practice. The cadence differs for Thursday, Saturday, and Monday games.
A report can change: the NFL policy requires a club to report an injury or other event affecting availability after the Friday update and before the inactive-list meeting. Do not treat Friday’s designation as the final game-day decision.
