To find photos without opting into an AI photo service, start with the photo app already on your phone. On iPhone and iPad, Photos search includes on-device analysis, although Apple’s separate Enhanced Visual Search sends an encrypted landmark-matching representation to Apple’s servers. In Google Photos, you can use classic Search without opting into Ask Photos, but Google does not say that classic Search always works entirely on your device or sends no data. Searching locally and keeping a photo library off the cloud are separate privacy questions.
What “without uploading” can—and cannot—mean
There are two different concerns: whether an app sends the photo itself to a service, and whether it sends any information derived from the photo. A feature may analyze an image on your device yet use a network request for a separate function. Likewise, turning off an AI search feature does not automatically turn off cloud photo backup.
So, if your requirement is that image pixels never leave your phone, check both the search feature and photo syncing. If your requirement is specifically to avoid a conversational AI feature, declining that feature may be enough—but it is not proof that every other search operation is offline.
Search with Apple Photos on iPhone or iPad
Use ordinary Photos search for objects, scenes, people, and places
Open Photos, tap Search, and enter a descriptive term, such as “motorcycles,” “trees,” or “apples.” Apple’s September 2019 technical brief described on-device analysis for scene classification, people and pets identification, and combinations of search terms; its examples include searching for “boat” and “beach” together. That document is a historical technical description, not a guarantee that every current Photos feature or model behaves identically. Apple’s 2019 Photos technical brief said the described processing and its analysis results stayed on the user’s device.

Understand Enhanced Visual Search before using landmark lookup
Apple’s Enhanced Visual Search support documentation describes a distinct feature for finding landmarks and points of interest, including when an image has no saved geolocation data. You can search a landmark name in Photos or Spotlight—for example, “Golden Gate Bridge” or “Arc de Triomphe.” The feature requires iOS 18, iPadOS 18, or macOS Sequoia or later, and is not available in every region.
Apple says Enhanced Visual Search does not send your photos or videos to Apple. Its documented explanation is that an on-device model creates an encrypted mathematical embedding, which is sent to Apple’s servers for comparison against a global landmark index. Apple says the image itself is not sent and that Apple cannot decrypt the request to learn the image information. This is a server-assisted lookup using a derived representation, not a fully offline process.

Turn off Enhanced Visual Search or check iCloud Photos
On iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Apps > Photos to turn off Enhanced Visual Search. Apple’s privacy information also directs Mac users to Photos settings for this control. Disabling this landmark feature does not disable iCloud Photos. Apple says iCloud Photos stores photos and videos in iCloud, protected in transit and at rest; if your requirement is that originals not be stored in cloud backup, check whether iCloud Photos is enabled separately. Apple’s Photos privacy information explains these distinctions.

Stay with classic Search
Google describes Ask Photos as an experimental, Gemini-powered feature. According to Google Photos Help, classic Search remains available unless you opt into Ask Photos, and users can switch between the two search experiences. If your goal is to avoid the conversational Gemini feature, do not opt in and use classic Search instead. Eligibility and availability may vary by region.

That choice should not be described as a guarantee that classic Search never sends data or always runs fully offline: Google’s documentation does not establish either claim. Google’s Photos privacy information for Gemini features says those features may process photos and videos, face-group labels, and account information. It also says personal data in Google Photos is not used to train generative AI models outside Google Photos. That is a statement about model training, not a statement that no processing or upload occurs.
Know what Google says about Ask Photos review
Google’s privacy information says Ask Photos queries may be reviewed by people after privacy protections, and describes an option to opt out of query review. Google says reviewed queries exclude photo pixels and the generated response. If you send feedback, it may include a transcript and information about the photos studied; an optional screenshot may show photos. Connecting to or sharing with another service can bring that service’s own policies and controls into play.

A privacy checklist before searching
- Choose the feature you actually need. General object or scene search is different from landmark lookup or conversational AI search.
- Check for opt-in features. Do not enable Ask Photos if you want to avoid that Gemini-powered feature.
- Check image backup separately. Search settings do not determine whether iCloud Photos or another cloud-sync feature stores your library.
- Read “on-device” narrowly. It describes where a stated analysis happens; it does not necessarily mean the phone makes no network request for any related feature.
- Check region and software eligibility. Enhanced Visual Search requires the specified Apple operating-system versions and is region-limited; Ask Photos access also varies.
- Do not assume all gallery apps behave alike. The cited Apple and Google documentation does not establish how every Android manufacturer’s gallery or third-party photo app processes searches.
