To find current parking, detours, and business access during road construction, check the transportation agency’s latest project update and map, then verify conditions through the local 511 service, posted signs, and the business itself. A detour for through traffic does not automatically mean a business is closed—but a driveway, parking space, or pedestrian route may change by work phase and time of day.
How do I find the detour and the latest road-closure information?
- Find the responsible agency’s project page. Search for the road, neighborhood, or destination with “construction” or “road closure.” Open the city, county, or state transportation agency’s page rather than relying only on a general search result or navigation app.
- Read the newest dated update. Check the update date, current construction phase, work hours, closure limits, and effective dates. Schedules can be tentative and may change with weather or field conditions; for example, Saint Paul’s project update says its schedule is subject to change. (City of Saint Paul, Payne Avenue Pedestrian Intersection Improvements)
- Open the latest map for your kind of trip. Projects may publish separate maps for regional detours, local business access, parking, and pedestrian routes. Choose the newest version: Saint Paul’s Grand Avenue Reconstruction page lists updated detour and local-business-access maps. (City of Saint Paul, Grand Avenue Reconstruction)
- Check the local 511 or equivalent live travel service. It can show current closures and traffic impacts. Alaska DOT&PF and MnDOT both direct travelers to agency project channels and 511 for updates. (Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities, Project Development and Businesses; Minnesota Department of Transportation, Helping Businesses During Construction)
- Follow signs and on-site directions. If an old map and current signs conflict, follow posted traffic control and ask the project contact or business for clarification. Do not enter a closed road or active work area because a map or navigation app suggests it.
Navigation apps can choose a route that is not the agency’s official detour. MnDOT cautions, “Apps often choose the fastest route, not the official detour.” (Minnesota Department of Transportation, Helping Businesses During Construction) Treat an app as a navigation aid, not confirmation that a route is open or permitted.
Does a road detour mean a business is inaccessible?
Not necessarily. A through-traffic detour may redirect drivers around a work zone while local access remains available by another approach. MnDOT explains that access for businesses can remain possible even when through traffic is detoured, though routes and signs may look different during construction. (Minnesota Department of Transportation, Helping Businesses During Construction) The specific arrangement depends on the project, phase, work hours, and safety conditions; a detour is not a guarantee that every driveway or entrance is open.

For example, the New Jersey Department of Transportation’s Route 70 traffic-mitigation plan includes driveway-access provisions under specified conditions, as well as turn restrictions and parking limitations. That is a project-specific plan, not a rule for other roadworks. (New Jersey Department of Transportation, Route 70 corridor traffic mitigation plan)

Where can I park while the road is closed?
Parking arrangements are local and may change as work moves. Use the newest project map and update, then confirm with the business before setting out. Ask where customers may legally park now, whether the suggested space is outside the closure, and how far the walk is to the entrance.
- In a 2026 update for the Hopland 101 project in California, Caltrans described street parking where construction was not taking place and additional nearby parking. These directions applied to that project area and update, not to roadworks generally. (Caltrans, Hopland 101 Project)
- In a September 2026 update, Saint Paul told visitors to park on a nearby street outside the closed section and walk to businesses. The notice also described pedestrian routes around work areas. (City of Saint Paul, Payne Avenue Pedestrian Intersection Improvements)
Do not assume that a closed curb lane, nearby side street, or work-zone shoulder is available for parking. Follow posted restrictions and use a location the project notice or business identifies as legal.

How can I confirm the entrance, delivery route, or accessible path?
Contact the business directly if the map does not clearly answer how to reach it. Hennepin County advises visitors to contact a business about access or parking changes. (Hennepin County, Nicollet Avenue reconstruction in Richfield) Ask specific questions:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Which entrance is open, and what address or approach should I use?
- Is vehicle access available during my arrival window, and are any turns restricted?
- Where is legal customer parking, and how should I walk from it to the entrance?
- Is there a step-free or otherwise accessible route, and is it open during the work?
- For a delivery, which vehicle approach and unloading arrangement are currently permitted?
Access can be limited even when a business is open. Hampshire County Council says that for some planned works, vehicles may not enter or leave properties in an active work area during working hours, while pedestrians are directed along footways. By contrast, a New Jersey DOT plan provides for driveway access under specified conditions. These examples show why access must be checked for the particular project and time. What should pedestrians do if a sidewalk or entrance is affected?
Use the marked pedestrian detour and follow instructions from traffic staff. Check the project map or notice for the alternative route if the usual sidewalk, crossing, or entrance is closed. Hampshire County directs pedestrians along footways and to traffic-management operatives; Saint Paul’s Payne Avenue update describes pedestrian routes around work areas. (Hampshire County Council, Planned Maintenance; City of Saint Paul, Payne Avenue Pedestrian Intersection Improvements) Do not walk through a barricaded work area or assume a vehicle entrance is also a safe pedestrian route.
