If you’re asking “Did my polling place change?”, check the official polling-place lookup for your current address and the specific election. Start with your state election office; if the result is unclear or conflicts with a mailed notice, map, or message, contact your local election office using contact information from an official government site. There is no single nationwide notification procedure established by the federal guidance cited here.
How to check whether your polling place changed
- Open your state’s official election website. The U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC) links to state and territory election offices through its Voter FAQs. Use the relevant state office’s link to reach its polling-place lookup or official local election office directory.
- Search using your current address and the specific election. Confirm the location and voting hours shown for that election. USAGov also directs voters to look up their polling place on its Voting on Election Day page.
- Check what kind of location the result describes. Your jurisdiction may assign you to a particular polling place, or it may use vote centers where eligible voters can vote at any center in the jurisdiction. Early-voting sites can also differ from Election Day sites. A nearby location is not necessarily valid for you; follow the rules and address-based result for your jurisdiction.
- Resolve conflicting information with the local election office. If the lookup is unavailable, a notice gives a different address, or you suspect a late change, use the official state or local government site to find the election office’s contact details. Ask which location applies to your address and election, and whether the office issued a correction or late update. The EAC identifies local election officials as the best source for practical registration and voting information.
Do not rely on a text, social post, map listing, or third-party website as authoritative unless it points to a current election-office source. Federal guidance points voters to official state and local sources; it does not establish that every jurisdiction uses every communication channel.
Why polling-place change notices differ
Election administration is decentralized, and states have different voting laws. The federal guidance cited here does not establish one nationwide practical procedure requiring every polling-place change to be announced by mail, phone, text, email, social media, or signs. Which channels are used, what details a notice must include, and how late changes are handled depend on the applicable jurisdiction and election.

Do not confuse a changed polling place with a registration change, a vote-center option, early-voting arrangements, or a change to the election date.

What a jurisdiction-specific rule can look like: Texas
A Texas Secretary of State advisory for specified 2025 elections describes requirements for counties participating in the countywide polling-place program. The advisory says participating counties must submit a communication plan explaining how voters will be notified of the change and new locations. It also says election notices must identify Election Day polling places and include location details such as the street address and any applicable suite or room number and building name. These are Texas program details, not a national template; the advisory cautions that its information may change because of legislation.
The same advisory describes a Texas countywide-program requirement for a computerized voter registration list capable of instantly verifying that a voter has not already voted at another polling place. That requirement should not be assumed to apply to every vote-center system elsewhere.

Is there a federal law requiring notices for polling-place changes?
The text of H.R. 7182, the “Minimum Notification Requirements for Voters Affected by Polling Place Changes Act,” is marked “Introduced in House.” It proposes individual notice at least seven days before a federal election when a registered voter is assigned a different location, by mail and telephone, and by text message and email if available. It also proposes general notices on a state or jurisdiction website, social media if available, and signs at the former polling place. For late assignments, the proposal would require reasonable efforts to let a voter who appears at the former location vote that day.

Those provisions describe an introduced bill, not a current nationwide mandate established by the bill text. Do not assume those channels or deadlines apply in your jurisdiction; check current state and local election-office guidance.

What national election figures do—and do not—tell you
The EAC’s 2024 Election Administration and Voting Survey report, released June 30, 2025, records 95,815 physical polling places for the 2024 general election. It separately reports 87,736 polling places for Election Day and 13,163 for in-person early voting; those categories may overlap within the overall total as defined in the report. The EAC cautions that prior reports undercounted polling places, so these figures should not be used to claim a year-over-year increase or decrease. They also do not show how many locations changed.
The EAC reported that more than 72% of voters cast ballots in person at a voting location in the 2024 general election, and that more than 158 million ballots were counted. These figures show the scale of in-person voting, not how often polling places change or whether voters receive or understand change notices. The reviewed federal sources do not provide a national statistic for those measures.
