Poplar trees generate in the Dappled Forest, a Overworld forest biome that the official release notes place near cold biomes. Poplar Leaves drop saplings, Wandering Traders can also trade them, and Poplar Logs craft into a Poplar wood set. These features are documented in Minecraft Java Edition 26.3, whose notes describe the Wilderness Bound update as released on September 15, 2026, and in Minecraft: Bedrock Edition 26.50.
Check your edition and version first
The poplar feature is documented in two official changelogs, and they do not cover exactly the same details. Use the table to see which edition supports what before you start searching.

Earlier development snapshot pages for Java 26.3 also describe the Dappled Forest and poplar trees. Treat those as background only and follow the released notes for current behavior.
Find poplar trees in the Dappled Forest
Poplars are tied to a single biome, so the search is a biome hunt rather than a crafting task. The official notes do not give coordinates, a fixed distance, or a guaranteed route, so plan on exploring.

- Explore the Overworld for the Dappled Forest biome.
- Use cold biomes as your starting clue. The notes say the Dappled Forest occurs near cold biomes, so explore the areas around the cold biomes you find rather than expecting the forest in one fixed place.
- Inside the Dappled Forest, look for standing Poplar Trees. In Java 26.3, fallen Poplar Trees also generate there.
- Note that the biome is described as a forest, so tree cover is the main visual cue once you arrive.
Get poplar saplings
There are two in-game sources for saplings, and both are stated in the Java 26.3 and Bedrock 26.50 notes. You do not need to keep searching for wild trees once you have one sapling.
Harvest them from Poplar Leaves
Poplar Leaves drop Poplar Saplings. The notes do not give a drop rate, a count per tree, or the tool or growth conditions involved, so do not plan around a specific yield.
Trade with Wandering Traders
Wandering Traders can offer Poplar Saplings in trades, as stated in both edition notes. The notes do not list the trade price or how often a trader offers them.
Plant a sapling to get more trees
Planting a sapling is the practical way to build a poplar grove. Each sapling grows into one of three leaf variants, chosen randomly:

- Red Poplar Leaves
- Orange Poplar Leaves
- Yellow Poplar Leaves
The official notes do not describe a way to choose the color before growth, so do not expect to guarantee a particular leaf color. The leaf colors are a visual difference only; the notes do not establish different gameplay uses for each variant.
Use Poplar Logs and the new Poplar wood set
The trunk of a poplar tree is made of Poplar Logs. The official Java 26.3 notes state: “Poplar Logs can be crafted into a new set of Poplar wood blocks.” The Bedrock 26.50 changelog says the same thing, so the log-to-wood relationship is consistent across both editions.
Gather logs first, then craft them into the wood set. The release notes do not list the individual blocks in the set or the recipe for each one, so confirm exact recipes in-game before you plan a build around a particular block.

The three colors belong to the leaves, so a red, orange, or yellow grove does not imply a differently colored set of planks or other wood blocks.

Other things that grow around poplars
Several features generate alongside poplars. They are optional, but they show up in the same areas you will be exploring.
Shelf Mushrooms
Shelf Mushrooms generate on or around Poplar Trees, and they also occur on fallen Poplar Trees. They come in two sizes:
- Small: Bone Meal can grow a small Shelf Mushroom into a large one (Java 26.3 notes).
- Large: Breaking a large Shelf Mushroom drops two Shelf Mushroom items (Java 26.3 notes).
- Cooking: Shelf Mushrooms can be used like other mushrooms to make stews, as both edition notes confirm.
- Trading: The Bedrock 26.50 notes say Wandering Traders can trade Shelf Mushrooms. The Java 26.3 notes do not state this.
Leaf Litter
Leaf Litter naturally generates on or around Poplar Trees in both editions. The notes do not describe a separate crafting or gameplay use for it, so treat it as decoration in the poplar areas.

Red Shrubs generate in small patches in the Dappled Forest and can be placed in the Composter, as both editions state.

What the official notes do not establish
Several things readers often ask about are not covered by the Java 26.3 or Bedrock 26.50 notes. Do not treat the following as confirmed:
- Fixed coordinates, seed-specific locations, or a search distance for the Dappled Forest
- Commands that locate the biome or a poplar tree
- Spawn probabilities for the biome or for trees within it
- Sapling drop rates, yield per tree, or growth conditions
- A method for choosing a leaf color before a sapling grows
- A full list of Poplar wood blocks and their recipes
If the game updates after these notes were published, check the newest changelog for your edition, since details can change.
If you cannot find poplar trees
Most missing-poplar problems come down to version or location rather than a bug. Work through these checks in order:

- Confirm your world. Poplars need the Dappled Forest biome to be present in your world. Explore further from cold biomes before deciding it is missing.
- Look for the right trees. In Bedrock, the notes state standing trees in the Dappled Forest but do not mention fallen trees, so do not rule out a poplar grove because no fallen trunks appear.
- Use other sources for saplings. If you cannot find trees, a Wandering Trader can offer saplings, and you can plant the sapling you receive.
A single player report that poplars were missing does not establish a general bug, so check your version and world first.
