If work stress is affecting your sleep, concentration, relationships, or ability to function, you can seek support through more than one route: ask for changes to the work conditions driving the strain, check whether your employer offers an Employee Assistance Program (EAP), and contact a qualified health professional when you need care. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, use emergency or crisis services. These options serve different purposes; a wellness exercise or short break is not a substitute for safer working conditions or professional help.

Start by identifying what is driving the strain

Stress can come from the work itself, the way it is organized, or personal circumstances—or several factors at once. In technology roles, pressure points may include repeated incident response, on-call demands, inadequate staffing or tools, unpredictable deadlines, difficult interactions, security responsibility, or being expected to stay available after hours. Not every technology job has the same risks.

A December 3, 2025 NIST NICE webinar presentation on cybersecurity work lists always-on expectations, lack of tools, stigma, overwork, deadlines, breaches, and “firedrills” as potential stressors. It is a presentation, not a representative workforce study, so it does not establish how common these experiences are across technology workers. The broader guidance from CDC/NIOSH also points to excessive demands and bullying as workplace factors worth addressing.

Try writing down the situations that reliably worsen the strain, what changes when they happen, and what might reduce the pressure. This is not a diagnosis; it is a way to make a conversation with a supervisor, support service, or clinician more specific.

Ask for a work adjustment and find out what support exists

Where it feels safe and appropriate, talk with a supervisor or another trusted workplace contact. CDC guidance recommends identifying the causes of stress, discussing possible solutions with coworkers or supervisors, and asking how to access workplace mental health resources. Depending on your workplace, HR, occupational health, or a union representative may also be a practical point of contact.

Make the request concrete. For example: “The current on-call pattern is affecting my sleep and concentration. Can we review rotation length, backup coverage, recovery time after incidents, and the support options available through our EAP?” You can also ask for a short-term adjustment while a longer-term plan is considered.

Possible work changes include adjusting workloads or schedules, improving communication, clarifying escalation and backup coverage, and strengthening teamwork. WHO’s workplace guidance discusses organizational measures alongside individual interventions. If the source of strain is an ongoing work condition, asking only how to cope can leave the cause untouched.

Understand what an EAP can—and cannot—offer

An EAP is one possible access point, not a guarantee of a particular service or outcome. CDC and NIOSH include access to EAPs among workplace support measures, but availability and terms depend on the employer and plan.

Before relying on it, check:

  • How to contact the program, its hours, and whether appointments are remote or in person.
  • Who is eligible, including whether household or family members can use it.
  • What services are offered, how many sessions may be covered, and whether there are fees.
  • What confidentiality means under the plan, what information may be shared with the employer, and which local rules apply.
  • Whether the EAP can refer you to longer-term care if you need it.

Do not assume that sessions are free, that a set number is included, or that confidentiality works the same way everywhere. Confirm the terms with the EAP or your plan documents.

Consider professional care when the impact persists

If distress is persistent, worsening, or substantially affecting sleep, concentration, relationships, work, or ordinary daily life, contact a qualified mental health professional or health-care provider. You do not need to label or diagnose yourself before asking for help. WHO’s guidance on mental health at work includes individual interventions and support related to return to work; individual care can sit alongside workplace changes.

When looking for care, ask about qualifications, availability, cost or insurance, language, remote or in-person options, and experience with occupational stress, on-call schedules, or traumatic work events if those are relevant to you. The right route depends on your needs and location; the sources cited here do not establish a particular directory, provider, or coverage arrangement.

Choose a support route by urgency and purpose

These routes can complement one another. Ask practical questions rather than assuming one is a replacement for the others.

Route Best suited to Questions to check
Workplace adjustment Reducing a work-related source of strain, such as excessive demands, unpredictable schedules, or inadequate support Who can approve changes? What can change now? How will the team review whether it helps?
Peer or manager support Talking through a work problem and identifying immediate next steps Is this person trustworthy and able to act? Is there another contact if not?
EAP Employer-linked support, which may include counseling or referrals depending on the plan Who is eligible? What is confidential? What services, hours, costs, and referral options apply?
Professional care Qualified assessment or ongoing support for personal or work-related distress Are the qualifications and approach a fit? What are the wait time, cost, location, and scheduling options?
Crisis or emergency help Immediate danger or an urgent crisis Which crisis line or emergency service is available where you are?

Fit matters as much as access: consider wait times, language, shift or on-call schedules, and whether a service understands the pressures relevant to your work. The sources here do not compare specific providers or plans.

Get urgent help if there is immediate danger

For people in the United States, CDC’s 988 guidance says confidential, free help is available 24/7/365 by calling or texting 988 or chatting at 988lifeline.org. If there is immediate danger, contact local emergency services. Outside the United States, use the crisis line or emergency service available in your country; 988 is not a global service.

What employers should do about work-related strain

Support should not depend only on an individual worker finding better coping strategies. CDC’s May 12, 2026 page, “Providing Support for Worker Mental Health,” states: “Changing workplace policies and practices are the best way to address burnout.” NIOSH similarly advises prioritizing organizational-level fixes before focusing on individual interventions.

For technology teams, that means listening to workers about workload and incident patterns, addressing staffing and tool gaps, setting workable expectations for availability, and reviewing schedules and recovery time. Supportive supervision, flexibility and control, training, and access to EAPs are also part of the NIOSH guidance. A webinar presentation from NIST NICE raises technology-specific stressors, but it does not show how prevalent they are across the sector.

WHO describes burnout as a syndrome resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed, with exhaustion, increased mental distance or cynicism about one’s job, and reduced professional efficacy. It is a work-related concept, not a reason to assume that every difficult period is burnout or to self-diagnose. The WHO’s mental health at work guidelines address workplace and individual interventions.

Keep broader figures in perspective

WHO’s 2022 overview estimates that 15% of working-age adults have a mental disorder at any point in time and estimates the global economic cost of depression and anxiety at US$1 trillion annually, driven predominantly by lost productivity. These are broad global figures, not estimates for technology workers or cybersecurity teams. They provide context for why workplace mental health matters, but they cannot tell an individual how common a particular experience is in their job.
