Start with the official announcement, then verify openings on the employer’s careers page and your state workforce portal. An expansion announcement can identify a facility, projected jobs and a likely hiring window, but it does not prove that applications are open. Use the steps below with your town, county and state; the official portal examples are for U.S. job seekers.

1. Use the expansion announcement to identify the employer and site

Look for the announcement on the state governor’s or economic-development agency’s website. Note the company, facility location, project status, estimated job count, expected hiring timing and any employer careers link. Search using the company name and town if the announcement is hard to find.

Treat projected positions as leads, not vacancies. For example, Michigan’s September 21, 2026 announcement described three expansions expected to create at least 243 jobs in total. It named planned facilities for U.S. Farathane in Port Huron, Wausau Supply in West Branch and Cooper Standard in Comins Township. The state said the figures represented business commitments to be formalized in performance-based agreements and could be amended or canceled. Read the Michigan announcement for its project-specific details; do not treat those figures as proof that jobs are posted or applications are open.

2. Search the employer’s official careers page

Search the company name with “careers” and the facility town, then use the employer’s own site to confirm that a listing is genuine and accepting applications. Filter for the plant location, but search several job families rather than only “factory worker.”

  • Production operator, assembler and machine operator
  • Material handler, logistics and warehouse roles
  • Maintenance technician and process technician
  • Quality inspector and supervisor

Some employers link directly to their careers pages from the expansion announcement. Prefer that official link over a reposted vacancy when you can.

3. Check the state workforce portal and local career office

Public workforce services can reveal postings and offer practical support. Use the portal for the state where the facility is located; names and available services differ. If you are outside the United States, use your country’s official employment service instead.

4. Search with location and role-specific terms

Combine the employer or town with a job title and a phrase that signals new hiring. Try searches such as:

  • “[company] production operator [town]”
  • “[town] manufacturing jobs” or “manufacturing jobs near me”
  • “[company] new facility hiring” or “plant opening jobs”
  • “[town] machine operator expansion” or “manufacturing hiring event”

Repeat the search for relevant roles such as assembler, maintenance technician, quality inspector and material handler. Set job alerts if the employer or portal offers them, and revisit official listings because new-facility hiring can roll out over time. Before sharing personal information or applying, confirm the vacancy on the employer’s careers site.

5. Compare the actual postings before applying

Read each current listing rather than relying on the expansion announcement for job terms. Compare:

  • Location and commute: Check the actual worksite, travel time and whether the posting refers to the new facility or another site.
  • Pay and benefits: Confirm the rate and benefits for the specific role. A project-level wage in an announcement does not establish pay for every opening.
  • Shift and schedule: Look for shift hours, weekends, overtime expectations and schedule details.
  • Qualifications and duties: Check required experience, credentials, physical demands and technical skills, along with any training offered.
  • Employment type: Determine whether the position is direct with the employer, temporary or contract.

The Michigan announcement, for instance, listed starting wages of $21.58 per hour plus benefits for at least 115 projected U.S. Farathane jobs and $22.00 per hour plus benefits for 92 estimated Wausau Supply jobs. Those were figures attached to the named projects, not confirmed terms for every role or evidence that applications were open. Its 36 projected Cooper Standard jobs were described as paying above the stated regional median. Check each live posting for the actual job’s terms.

6. Use labor-market data for exploration, not vacancy confirmation

State occupation data can help you compare career paths or identify related roles, but it cannot tell you whether a particular factory has an open position today. Indiana’s Top Jobs Indiana ranks occupations using demand and job-quality indicators, with data based on Lightcast and updated twice a year. For a current vacancy, check the employer and workforce listings directly.

A quick verification checklist

  • Is the facility in the town or commute area you can reach?
  • Does the employer’s official page show the position as open?
  • Does the application name the correct worksite and employer?
  • Have you confirmed role-specific pay, benefits, schedule and employment type?
  • Do you understand the qualifications, duties and any training offered?
