If you’re a U.S. veteran looking for affordable therapy without VA benefits, start by checking whether a VA mental-health service or Vet Center applies to you, then compare local community providers and ask each one about its actual fees. Not being enrolled in VA health care does not automatically close every VA route, but eligibility and costs depend on the service.

First, clarify what “without VA benefits” means

People use that phrase to mean different things: they may not be enrolled in VA health care, may be unsure whether they qualify, or may not qualify for a particular VA benefit. Those situations are not interchangeable. The VA says some mental-health support is available without health-care enrollment, but that does not establish that every veteran qualifies for every service or that routine appointments are free. Ask about your specific service, eligibility, cost, and appointment availability.

Check VA and Vet Center options

Ask a VA medical center about mental-health care

The VA’s mental-health page says, “You don’t need to be enrolled in VA health care to get care.” That statement applies to the access routes described on the page; it is not a blanket guarantee of eligibility for all VA services. Contact a VA medical center or ask in person which service may fit your circumstances and whether it has a fee. The VA page also lists free services, but confirm the cost of any routine care directly. VA mental-health services

Ask whether a Vet Center serves you

Vet Centers provide no-cost community-based counseling to eligible people, including some family and couples counseling. Eligibility depends on military experience and can include members of the National Guard and Reserve, as well as family support in qualifying situations. Call 1-877-927-8387 or use the Vet Center locator to ask whether your service history qualifies and whether the local center offers the care you need.

Find local community care and verify the listing

FindTreatment.gov lets you search for treatment facilities by ZIP code or location. Depending on what you need, use filters for mental-health care, veterans, telemedicine, payment assistance, or a sliding-fee scale. The locator is a starting point, not a live guarantee of openings, services, or current prices: its FAQ says facility information is updated annually and advises calling before visiting. Ask providers what you will actually pay

There is no nationally standardized sliding-scale rate or guaranteed payment program in the cited guidance. SAMHSA recommends asking providers about the options below; availability and eligibility vary by provider and location. SAMHSA: How to find low-cost treatment

  • Sliding-fee scale: Ask whether the fee depends on income, what documents are required, and whether the rate changes after an initial period.
  • Grants or charity care: Ask whether help is available for counseling and who can qualify.
  • Payment plans: Ask about the amount due per visit, any balance carried forward, and the terms of the plan.
  • Community health centers and state agencies: Ask whether they offer behavioral-health services or can refer you to a lower-cost local provider.

Before booking, get the expected price per session, any intake or assessment charge, and the provider’s current opening and wait time. These details are specific to the facility and may not appear in a directory listing.

Consider Cohen Veterans Network if its eligibility and locations fit

Cohen Veterans Network serves post-9/11 veterans, active-duty service members, and families regardless of discharge status or service experience. The organization says uninsured care may be available at no cost after a case-by-case review; that is not a universal price guarantee. Its FAQ reported 23 clinics serving 22 states and the District of Columbia as of May 2026, so coverage is limited and can change. Check the Cohen Veterans Network directly for the nearest location, telehealth coverage, current openings, eligibility, and the cost you would be expected to pay.

Cohen Veterans Network Care for post-9/11 veterans, active-duty service members, and families; uninsured care may be free after individual review. Area served, format, eligibility, current openings, and your individual cost.
