A publisher paywall does not necessarily mean an academic paper has no legal free version. Start with the paper’s DOI or exact title, check Unpaywall and Google Scholar, then search a relevant university or subject repository. Before relying on a file, confirm which version it is and review the record’s licence or sharing terms: free to read does not automatically mean free to reuse.

Follow this search order

  1. Identify the exact paper

Copy the DOI if the article has one. Otherwise, search its exact title and author names; this helps distinguish it from similarly titled work.

  2. Check Unpaywall

Unpaywall’s browser extension can flag an indexed open version while you view an article page. MIT Libraries describes it as a way to find legally available manuscript versions and final published articles where sharing is allowed or the journal is open access. Utrecht University Library says Unpaywall indexes articles made publicly available through repositories. An absent result is not proof that no open version exists. MIT Libraries; Utrecht University Library.

  3. Search Google Scholar and inspect “All versions”

Search the paper’s exact title in Google Scholar. If “All versions” appears, open the results and look for a repository record or an open publisher page. Google says it groups versions when it identifies them and selects the publisher’s full authoritative text as primary when available. Its documentation also acknowledges technical indexing problems, so Scholar may miss a copy. Treat “All versions” as a lead, not a complete inventory. MIT Libraries; Google Scholar: Publishers.

  4. Search repositories relevant to the field

Try the authors’ university repositories and a subject repository or preprint server suited to the paper. MIT Libraries names arXiv, OSF Preprints, DSpace@MIT, PubMed Central and SSRN as examples. For biomedical and life-sciences work, PubMed Central may be a useful repository route; other disciplines have their own collections. UCL also lists CORE and OpenDOAR among routes to open research. A repository result still needs checking: the file may not be the final published article. MIT Libraries; UCL Library Services.

  5. Try another discovery service

If the first tools do not find a copy, try Open Access Button or CORE. UCL describes Open Access Button and Unpaywall as browser tools for finding legal open copies, and CORE as an aggregator of open-access research outputs. Utrecht also lists OpenAlex, Google Scholar and PubMed as search tools that may link to full text. Each depends on its own indexing coverage, so a miss in one service is a reason to try another. 6. Ask the author or a library

If you still cannot locate an open copy, check the author’s page or ask whether they can share a version. MIT Libraries notes that most publishers allow authors to responsibly share their own publications, but the permitted version and terms matter. You can also ask your library about an article request or interlibrary loan. Eligibility, cost and timing vary by institution and situation. Check which version you found

An open file may be one of several versions, and the distinction matters when you read, cite or share it.

  • Scanner type: Document
  • Connectivity technology: USB
  • With Auto Scan Mode, the scanner automatically detects what you're scanning
  • Digitize documents and images
  • Preprint: a manuscript posted before peer review. MIT Libraries says preprints are not peer reviewed, and the text may differ from the eventual article.
  • Accepted manuscript: the peer-reviewed manuscript accepted by the journal, usually without the publisher’s final formatting. MIT Libraries defines it as the article accepted after peer review but not in the publisher’s formatting; it includes changes made after review.
  • Version of record: the final article as published in the journal. Access to this version on a repository or author site may depend on the article’s open-access status and publisher terms.

MIT Libraries’ definitions are on its open-access article-finding page, updated August 11, 2026.

Verify provenance and permissions before using the file

Open the repository or publisher record, not just the download link. Check that the title and authors match, identify the version, and look for a stated licence or sharing conditions. Compare publication details and text if you have more than one copy, then cite the version you actually consulted.

Being able to read a file without a paywall does not by itself grant permission to repost, redistribute or adapt it. MIT Libraries notes that most publishers do not allow posting the final published version unless the article or journal is open access. The applicable terms depend on the work, licence, repository conditions and law; do not infer reuse rights from free access alone.

If no copy turns up

A failed search is not conclusive: Google Scholar documents technical coverage gaps, and other discovery tools also depend on what they index. Try a different repository or search service, then use an author or library request route. Do not assume that an unfamiliar PDF-sharing site is authorized; use copies linked from recognized publisher, repository or author records.
