Start with the official Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) website: itat.gov.in. Use its Case Status facility when you have a case identifier, and check the relevant bench’s cause list or pronouncement list when you need to find a hearing or recently delivered decision. For official use, an online copy is not a substitute for a certified copy obtained from ITAT.

Choose the right ITAT search route

What you need Where to start Useful information
Progress or details for a known case Official Case Status Appeal number, filing date, assessee name, or acknowledgement number; some routes also require a bench and appeal type, and the form displays a CAPTCHA. ITAT official site
Whether a matter is scheduled or a decision has been pronounced Bench-level cause lists and pronouncement lists in ITAT notices Check the relevant bench and date, and look for later notices because lists may be revised. ITAT official site
Finding a decision by order-related search Order Search or Pronouncement Search on the live ITAT site Government documentation identifies these as ITAT website functions, but the current dedicated Order Search filters are not established here. Verify the live page controls. Income Tax Department notifications

Search case progress with Case Status

Open the ITAT website and select its Case Status facility. The official form lists four search routes: appeal number, date of filing, assessee name, and acknowledgement number. Choose the identifier you have; select a bench and appeal type where the form asks for them, then complete the displayed CAPTCHA. The page and available controls are on the official ITAT site.

If a name search does not identify the matter, try an appeal number, filing date, or acknowledgement number if you have one. Make sure the selected bench and appeal type match the case details available to you; the form’s selection requirements vary by route.

Check cause lists and pronouncement lists

For a case you expect to be heard, or one that may have been decided recently, inspect the dated lists and notices for the relevant bench on ITAT’s website. A cause list helps locate scheduled matters; a pronouncement list helps locate decisions announced for a bench and date. Check for a newer notice before relying on a list, since lists may be revised.

ITAT describes itself as a quasi-judicial institution established in January 1941 that specializes in appeals under the Direct Taxes Acts. Its homepage also notes that its orders are final, with an appeal to the High Court only where a substantial question of law arises for determination. See the ITAT homepage for the Tribunal’s own description.

Use Order Search carefully

Government documentation identifies Order Search and Pronouncement Search as functions of the ITAT website. The present filters and exact behavior of the dedicated Order Search are not established here, so do not assume it supports a particular combination of party name, date, appeal number, or other fields. Start at itat.gov.in, locate the live search function, and use the controls shown there.

Verify third-party results against ITAT

Legal research databases can help surface a judgment when you have only a party name, citation, court, statutory section, or date. Their indexes are supplementary discovery tools, not the Tribunal’s official case record. Once you find a likely decision, compare its case details and order with ITAT’s official site or notices before relying on it.

When you need a certified copy

For official use, follow ITAT’s certification process rather than treating a downloadable or database copy as authenticated. The Tribunal’s Terms & Conditions state: “Only the certified copies of the order obtained from the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal would be considered to be the authenticated copy of the order for official use.” Read the ITAT website terms and obtain the certified copy from the Tribunal.
