Start with the funder’s eligibility rules, not the project description. Many biology grants require an eligible university, nonprofit, or other sponsoring organization; being able to submit a proposal as an individual does not mean every grant will accept you. Search official funder portals and relevant scientific societies, then confirm the applicant, host, location, and deadline requirements in the live call. Emergency funding is usually tied to an institution or specialty rather than available as a universal fund for independent researchers.

Can you get a biology grant without a university?

Sometimes, but “independent researcher” can mean different things: an unaffiliated individual, a researcher employed outside academia, or a university investigator whose work is independent of a senior colleague. A funder may treat those cases differently. The decisive question is whether the specific opportunity permits your applicant type and gives you a way to receive and administer the award.

In the United States, Grants.gov says individuals may apply only to opportunities that expressly allow individual applicants; most federal opportunities are intended for organizations. Grants.gov also distinguishes research grants from personal financial assistance. A listing on the portal is not evidence that an unaffiliated person is eligible.

NIH research-project funding generally runs through a sponsoring institution or organization, and NIH requires a designated principal investigator (PI). A host, collaborator, or fiscal sponsor may be useful only if the funding notice permits that arrangement and the organization can meet the funder’s requirements. Do not assume that adding a fiscal sponsor makes an otherwise ineligible application eligible.

Where to search, by funder and location

Use official portals and current opportunity pages as the source of truth. First filter for geography and applicant type, then check scientific fit and award mechanism.

Route Best fit Eligibility and timing to verify
Grants.gov (United States) Federal opportunities across agencies Individuals can apply only when a specific opportunity is open to individuals; most opportunities are for organizations. Check the listing’s applicant rules and active status.
NIH (United States) Biomedical and health-related research Match the question to an NIH institute or center and a specific notice. NIH identifies Section III of the notice as the place to check eligibility, including organization, PI, foreign involvement, and application-type rules. Contact program staff about scientific fit.
NSF BIO Core (United States) Foundational biology, from molecules and cells to organisms, ecosystems, and biomes The solicitation describes single- and multi-investigator awards and says full proposals are accepted anytime, subject to the solicitation, NSF policies, and available funds. It does not by itself establish that an unaffiliated individual may apply; confirm applicant eligibility in the solicitation.
BBSRC applicant-led standard research grant (United Kingdom) Investigator-led bioscience within the BBSRC remit The described 2026–27 opportunity requires an eligible UK research-organization base; overseas organizations and business-based applicants are not eligible under that call. Its listed application window is 1 May 2026 to 29 April 2027, so check the live listing for status and terms.
DFG Individual Research Grants (Germany) Defined research projects at German research institutions The programme is for qualified researchers who have completed academic training, as a rule doctorate holders, and is not a route for an unaffiliated researcher to conduct a project outside an eligible institution.

These are examples, not a complete directory. A researcher outside the United States should search their national research-funding agency and relevant field societies; a US-based researcher should also check whether a specialist foundation or society funds their subfield.

How to find an opportunity that fits

  1. Write a concise project summary. State the organism or system, research question, methods, location, approximate budget range, and desired start date. This makes it easier to judge whether a programme’s remit and scale fit your work.
  2. Identify likely sponsors by scientific remit. NIH is relevant to biomedical and health-related questions; NSF BIO supports foundational biology across scales. BBSRC and DFG are examples of national routes whose eligibility depends on an appropriate institutional base.
  3. Search official portals and current calls. On Grants.gov, filter by agency, topic, applicant type, and active status. For NIH or another agency, follow through to the specific funding notice rather than relying on a broad programme page.
  4. Read the full notice before drafting. Check applicant organization, PI rules, geography, citizenship or residency requirements, project type, allowable costs, proposal format, award dates, and any limits on application type. For NIH notices, pay particular attention to Section III.
  5. Ask a precise eligibility question. Contact the named programme officer or, if applying through an organization, its research or grants office. Give a brief description of your status and ask whether that applicant and host arrangement is eligible before investing in a full proposal.
  6. Calendar the complete timeline. Include the deadline, institutional approvals, required letters, review schedule, and expected award start. A call that appears open may still be impractical if its start date comes too late for your funding need.

NIH describes both major and smaller or shorter-term research mechanisms, but the notice determines which mechanism is suitable and who may apply. A smaller mechanism is not automatically an individual-researcher exception.

What to do when funding is ending

Run an emergency search in parallel with efforts to preserve the existing project. Bridge awards commonly target a narrow funding gap, a defined completion task, or a route to renewed external support; they are not general-purpose grants for any researcher facing a shortfall.

Apologia Biology Dissection Complete Kit
  • kit contains all you need for the Apologia Biology course
  1. Contact your research office and department leadership immediately. Ask about internal bridge, interim, completion, or emergency awards and whether your status meets their rules.
  2. Ask the current funder’s grants-management contact about the existing award. Confirm whether rebudgeting, a no-cost extension, or a particular closeout schedule is allowed. Do not treat any of these as available until the funder approves or confirms it.
  3. Search field-specific societies and foundations. Check current calls for interim support, project completion, or recovery after a lost award; eligibility may depend on discipline, membership, employment, or prior funding.
  4. Define the smallest useful bridge objective. Specify what the requested support would preserve or complete—such as retaining staff, finishing a critical experiment, maintaining a colony, or completing analysis—and connect it to a credible next external application.

Examples of restricted bridge support

Programme Who or what it covers Details that matter
UConn EMERGE Bridge Support Eligible full-time University of Connecticut faculty whose externally reviewed grant has recently ended or is ending soon Requires a specific external-funding plan. Applications are rolling, and the guidelines were updated 16 July 2026. The programme cap is 20% of average annual direct costs for a six-month period; this is a UConn-specific limit, not a general bridge-award benchmark. Awards are limited and tied to the prior or pending grant’s budget.
OHSU Medical Research Foundation Emergency Interim Support Established investigators at the local institution who have lost national grant funding Applicants must explain current funding and pending revisions and provide a support letter from the department chair or institute director.
American Ornithological Society 2026 Bridge/Completion Grants Qualifying ornithological research after previously awarded funds were lost Applicants must be PIs employed by or affiliated with specified organizations and AOS members. Actively enrolled students cannot serve as PI. This is a field-specific call, not general biology emergency aid.
ASH ARCH Hematology researchers considering the current ASH route The programme page says ARCH succeeds the ASH Bridge Grant program. Check ARCH’s current eligibility details rather than relying on older Bridge Grant descriptions.

These examples show why it is important to search locally as well as nationally: eligibility can be bound to an employer, a specific scientific field, membership, or the loss of a particular kind of award. They do not establish a universal emergency fund or a general success rate for bridge applications.

Compare the real costs and timeline before applying

When you have more than one plausible opportunity, compare the conditions that determine whether you can actually use the award. Do not compare headline award amounts alone.

Thames & Kosmos Genetics & DNA Lab 10x2.5x11 inch
  • Investigate the building blocks of life and learn the ABC's of DNA!
  • Isolate plant DNA in a test tube.
  • Learn about biological inheritance.
  • Assemble a DNA model to see its elegant double-stranded helical structure.
  • A 48-page, full-color manual guides you through 20 experiments and teaches about the basics of genetics and DNA.
  • Applicant and host: Can an individual apply, or must the applicant be an organization? If a host is needed, will it accept and administer the award?
  • Location and field: Does the programme cover your country, institution, and biological subfield?
  • Personal eligibility: Are there degree, career-stage, citizenship, residency, membership, or faculty-status conditions?
  • Purpose and scale: Is the call designed for a new project, feasibility work, bridge support, or completion of an existing project?
  • Budget rules: Which direct and indirect costs are allowable, and what contribution or institutional commitment is required?
  • Practical timing: What are the deadline, review period, award duration, and likely start date? Will funds arrive before the gap causes the problem you are trying to solve?

For scale, the BBSRC opportunity listing describes standard research grants with full economic costs up to £2 million for up to five years and says BBSRC funds 80% of full economic cost. Those figures apply to that listed UK programme, not to grants generally; confirm the live opportunity’s terms and whether your organization is eligible.

Eligibility checklist

  • Does the notice permit your applicant type: an individual, university or nonprofit, or company?
  • If a host organization is required, can it receive the funds and meet the award’s administrative and compliance requirements?
  • Do you meet all degree, career-stage, citizenship, residency, membership, and employment conditions?
  • Does your question fit the funder’s mission and the specific opportunity’s scope?
  • Is the correct application mechanism available, and is the deadline still open?
  • For bridge funding, can you document the funding gap, time-sensitive need, institutional support if required, and next funding or completion plan?

Requirements vary by notice and programme. Recheck the official live page before applying because deadlines, status, eligibility, and available funds can change.
