To find games like a favorite, first identify what you want to repeat—such as tactical combat, exploration, co-op, story choices, atmosphere, or short sessions. Then use a store’s similarity listings and tags, add personalized recommendations or trusted human picks, and check each candidate against your platform and preferences. A recommendation is a lead, not a promise that the game will feel identical.
What should I play if I like a particular game?
Start with the part of the game you enjoyed most. “I like RPGs” may be too broad to guide a useful search; “I want party-based combat and companion stories” gives you a clearer target. A match might share a genre, but it could instead share a mechanic, mood, setting, pace, or multiplayer format.

Write down one or two qualities you want to repeat. This helps you judge whether a recommendation is relevant even when its genre or setting differs from your favorite.

How to find games like your favorite
- Open the favorite’s store page. Look for a “More Like This” shelf or the store’s equivalent. On Steam, the top 20 tags on a game are used to determine which games appear as similar on its store page. Treat the shelf as a starting point, not a quality ranking. Steam Tags
- Search for specific tags. Choose tags that describe the quality you want to repeat—a particular combat style or mood, for example—rather than relying only on a broad genre. Steam supports tag-based browsing and search filters. Its Discovery Update describes searching by name, tag, or description, with filters such as Steam features, operating system, and language. Steam Discovery Update
- Apply platform and feature filters. Narrow the list to the platform you use and features that matter, such as co-op or controller support where available. Filter names and options differ between stores; the Steam filters above should not be assumed to exist on every platform.
- Add personalized recommendations. On Steam, try the Interactive Recommender alongside tag browsing. Valve says it uses playtime histories to find games played by people with broadly similar habits, rather than directly relying on tags or reviews. Introducing the Interactive Recommender
- Check a human-curated source. Ask friends or consult followed Steam curators, specialist reviewers, or relevant communities. Steam says curator recommendations can appear on the home page and on genre and tag pages. Look for an explanation of why a game was selected and whether that curator’s taste matches yours. Steam Curators
- Inspect the candidates. Compare each game with the reason you started searching. Check its store description, tags, screenshots, and available gameplay footage, then confirm it fits your platform and desired features.
Steam tags and personalized recommendations find different kinds of matches
Tags describe games; personalized recommendations draw on player histories. Steam’s documentation says tags are applied by developers, players with non-limited accounts, and moderators, and that tag overlap contributes to recommendations and “More Like This” similarity. Less common tags can be more informative than very common ones, but a tag is still a signal to interpret—not proof that two games play alike. Steam Tags

The Interactive Recommender looks for games played by people with play patterns similar to yours. Valve’s 2019 explanation puts the idea this way: “if players with broadly similar play habits to you also tend to play another game you haven’t tried yet, then that game is likely to be a good recommendation for you.” Introducing the Interactive Recommender
Because the methods use different signals, it can be useful to try both: tags for descriptive overlap and the recommender for play-pattern matches. Steam’s interface and controls may change, so check the live storefront for current options.

How to compare a shortlist
Use a small checklist rather than judging candidates by a similarity shelf alone:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Appeal: Does it share the mechanic, tone, setting, pace, or social experience you named?
- Platform and features: Is it available where you play, and does it support the features you need?
- Reason for the match: Is the recommendation based on tag overlap, personalized play history, or a curator’s stated explanation?
- Range: Are the results older or newer, more popular or more niche than you want? Use popularity and recency controls if the recommender offers them.
- Supporting evidence: Do the game’s description, screenshots, and available footage fit the experience you are looking for?
What to do when the first results are poor
- Choose a different starting game. If your favorite combines several genres or unusual mechanics, start from another game that shares the one feature you want to repeat.
- Make the search more specific. Replace a broad genre tag with a more precise mechanic or mood tag.
- Switch discovery methods. If tag results are too literal, try a curator or personalized recommendations. If personalized results lean too mainstream, adjust toward niche when that control is available.
- Use human recommendations for very new games. A play-history-based recommender cannot surface a new release that nobody has played yet. Valve describes the Interactive Recommender as one discovery feature, not a replacement for Steam’s other methods. Steam Interactive Recommender released to all users
Using Steam’s Discovery Queue and other discovery features
The Interactive Recommender is not Steam’s only discovery route. Valve says it complements existing systems, including the Discovery Queue. If one route misses what you want, try another rather than treating one list as a complete catalog. Steam Interactive Recommender released to all users The Discovery Update also describes search and filters for narrowing what you see. Steam Discovery Update
