Start with the official grant page for your robotics program and the regional partner serving your team. Then check each grant’s location, team-status, and eligible-expense rules before counting it toward your budget: some awards can pay travel, while others cover registration only.
Start with your team’s program, location, and costs
There is no single grant list that applies to every student robotics team. Funding depends on the competition program, country or region, whether the team is new or returning, and sometimes the school or nonprofit supporting it.
Before searching, write down:
- Your program, such as FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC), FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC), or VEX.
- Your country, state or region, and city if a local program may apply.
- Whether the team is a rookie or veteran under the grant’s definition.
- The school or nonprofit that can sponsor or administer funds.
- The costs you need covered: registration, robot parts and tools, travel and lodging, or other expenses.
For FRC and FTC, begin with FIRST’s team-grant guidance and your local FIRST Program Delivery Partner. FIRST describes sponsor-selected awards, sponsor grants administered through a FIRST application, grants identified with local partners, and pooled grants for categories such as new FRC teams, FRC sustainability, or FTC rookies. For VEX, begin with its funding page, which directs teams to different resources for the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Availability and terms vary by region.

- Travel may be allowed: FIRST says unrestricted grants for U.S. FRC teams can cover miscellaneous costs, including travel. Pennsylvania FIRST’s Philadelphia team support grant also lists competition travel among possible uses, subject to its recipient and location requirements. See FIRST’s grant guidance and Pennsylvania FIRST’s grant page.
- Registration-only support: NASA’s 2026–2027 FRC sponsorship pays an eligible team’s first Regional or district registration and is sent to FIRST. It is not general travel funding. The application closed September 30, 2026, so it is not an open opportunity as of October 4, 2026. Details are on NASA’s 2026–2027 page.
FIRST Team Grants require a Donor Intent Form, and allocation and treatment of unused funds can depend on the particular award. Confirm whether the grant pays the team, the school, or an organization directly, and whether reimbursement is required, before assuming it can cover a particular bill.

| California FIRST / Argosy Foundation new-team FRC grant, 2026–2027 | Rookie FRC teams in California that are starting in 2026–2027. | $3,000 per team; described as unrestricted for registration, parts, travel, or other team needs. A request does not guarantee an award. | First come, first served while funds last; the page lists October 12, 2026 as the final deadline. Check remaining funds and the live application status at California FIRST. |
| Pennsylvania FIRST Philadelphia team support grant, 2026–2027 | Eligible Philadelphia FIRST teams and coaches, subject to the page’s school/nonprofit, student-registration, and event-participation requirements. | Expected award ranges are $1,000–$1,500 for FTC teams and $5,000–$7,000 for FRC teams, depending on applicants and awardees. Permitted uses include parts, tools, uniforms, registration, travel, and other appropriate team expenses. | The page says some state funding was expected but not yet received, so a disbursement timeline could not be promised. Review payment, recordkeeping, reporting, and current application details at Pennsylvania FIRST. |
| Pennsylvania FIRST FTC grants, 2026–2027 | Eligible Pennsylvania FTC rookie or veteran teams for an initial grant, or eligible FTC veteran teams for renewal; see the live criteria. | Initial grant: $4,000, plus tuition for up to two FIRST Certified Professional Development courses, up to $600 each. Renewal grant: $1,500, plus one course, up to $600. Check the page for eligible expenses and conditions rather than assuming these amounts can fund travel. | Application status and full terms are on Pennsylvania FIRST’s team-grant page. |
| NASA FRC sponsorship, 2026–2027 | U.S. FRC teams only. The program prioritizes rookies, defines a rookie as a team new to FRC that has not competed in an official FRC event, and has a Year-Two route for teams that were rookies and received NASA sponsorship in the 2026 season. No veteran grants are offered this season. | Covers an eligible team’s first Regional or district registration; NASA sends the funds directly to FIRST. A Year-Two applicant must have secured $5,000 in corporate funds and agree to mentor a robotics team. The page does not state an award amount. | The application closed September 30, 2026. Required obligations include an educational institution sponsor letter, student entry and exit surveys, an annual report, and bringing a completed robot to competition. See NASA’s grant page. |
| FIRST 2026–2027 FRC Team Support Grant and 3M grant | The need-based FRC Team Support Grant is primarily for teams outside the United States and is intended to help secure the remainder of the FRC registration fee. The 3M application is listed for FRC and FTC teams. | The portal does not state an award amount for these listings. Neither should be treated as general travel funding without terms that expressly allow it. | The portal lists the 3M application window as September 17–October 17, 2026. Check the live status and each application’s terms at FIRST’s application portal; applying does not guarantee an award. |
Geography can be decisive. For example, California FIRST’s Argosy Foundation award is for new California FRC teams starting in 2026–2027, while NASA’s cited sponsorship is limited to U.S. FRC teams. NASA’s page also says it cannot sponsor teams outside the United States or teams in other robotics programs.

Build a focused funding search
- Make a one-page team profile. Record the competition program, team number if applicable, location, rookie or veteran status, school or nonprofit sponsor, and the specific funding need.
- Search the official program and regional partner pages. For FIRST, check sponsor-hosted and pooled grants and contact the local Program Delivery Partner where appropriate. For VEX, follow the funding link for your location rather than assuming one grant applies worldwide. The starting points are FIRST’s guidance and VEX’s funding page.
- Break the request into cost categories. Separate registration, parts and tools, travel and lodging, and other needs. For every grant, note which categories are allowed, the amount or range, deadline, whether funds are limited, who receives payment, and reporting duties.
- Ask the school or nonprofit about administration before applying. Confirm its rules for donations, reimbursement, travel approval, and handling a grant payment. NASA’s sponsor-letter requirement and Pennsylvania FIRST’s recipient and recordkeeping rules illustrate why the institution may have responsibilities beyond signing an application.
- Track applications separately from awards. Record the submission date, decision date if known, amount requested, and status. Do not treat pending applications as confirmed budget revenue: California FIRST and FIRST’s portal both state that applying does not guarantee funding.
- Prepare materials the opportunity actually requests. Common useful items include a clear, itemized use-of-funds budget and school or nonprofit support information. Also plan for receipts, event participation, surveys, and reports when those are conditions of a grant.
Plan for the work after an award
Some funding comes with deliverables, not just an application. NASA’s 2026–2027 grant requires an educational institution sponsor letter, student entry and exit surveys, an annual report, and a completed robot brought to competition. Pennsylvania FIRST’s local grants include recordkeeping and reporting requirements, along with student-registration and event-participation conditions for the Philadelphia opportunity.
