To find every Side Quest in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, sweep the map region by region, revisit towns and stables as your story progress changes, and record each quest’s trigger conditions beside its name. Use the Adventure Log as your save’s authoritative checklist. Published guides disagree about the base-game total: Zelda Dungeon’s catalogue and Piggyback each use 76, while the Zelda Dungeon Wiki lists 77. Treat that difference as a counting issue, not proof that your game is missing a quest.

How many Side Quests are in Breath of the Wild?

The safest answer depends on what you count and whether downloadable content is included.

Scope Published count Source and qualification
Base game 76 Zelda Dungeon catalogue, accessed 2026
Base game 76 Piggyback guide publisher, accessed 2026
Base game 77 Zelda Dungeon Wiki, accessed 2026; conflicting community-wiki count
DLC additions 14 Zelda Dungeon catalogue: 13 paid Expansion Pass quests and one free Xenoblade Chronicles 2 crossover quest

The 76 and 77 figures have not been reconciled by a published counting methodology. For a practical completion run, use the Side Quests shown in your own Adventure Log, then decide whether your personal checklist also includes the 14 DLC quests. Do not add Main Quests, Shrine Quests, or optional activities simply because they are objectives on the map.

That discrepancy is important when you compare percentages or compare two checklists. A guide that says you are at 75 of 76 is not necessarily contradicting a wiki that says 75 of 77; the two references may classify one entry differently. Your save file does not need to match a website’s denominator. Mark the entries you have actually discovered and completed, and write the scope and count at the top of your own list.

What counts as a Side Quest?

Side Quests are the optional quest entries tracked in the Side Quests section of the Adventure Log. They are separate from:

  • Main Quests, which advance Link’s central story and are handled separately in the game’s quest structure.
  • Shrine Quests, which lead to a shrine and are listed with their associated shrine in dedicated catalogues.
  • Untracked activities, such as many standalone challenges, treasure hunts, races, and collectibles that do not create a Side Quest entry.

Zelda Dungeon’s catalogue explicitly separates Side Quests from Shrine Quests and Main Quests. This distinction matters when comparing a website checklist with your Adventure Log: a guide may describe an optional activity even when it is not one of the numbered Side Quests.

If your goal is “everything optional,” keep a second list for shrine discoveries, map activities, armor hunts, and other tasks. Mixing those lists makes it look as though a Side Quest is missing when the entry was never intended to appear in the Side Quest tab.

A reliable region-by-region sweep

Regional organization is the most dependable way to expose quests you have not yet discovered. Zelda Dungeon’s catalogue arranges its base-game list by region and connects entries to requirements, map locations, and walkthroughs. Piggyback describes the same regional approach, using maps for quest givers and destinations.

1. Choose one region as your current audit

Start with a region containing a town, stable, or several named NPCs. Finish the audit before moving on. Mark each entry as discovered, active, completed, or not yet available. This prevents a quest that is waiting on a prerequisite from being mistaken for one you missed.

Use a separate page, note, or spreadsheet section for every regional heading in your chosen list. Put the quest title in the first column and leave room for the giver, exact starting spot, requirements, objective, and completion status. A waiting column is especially useful: it tells you why you cannot trigger a quest yet instead of sending you back through the same town without a plan.

2. Search the places where quests concentrate

  • Speak with residents in towns, including children and characters who move between locations.
  • Check every stable and its surrounding camp.
  • Revisit named NPCs after major story milestones.
  • Inspect houses and work areas rather than limiting your search to obvious merchants.

Do not assume that every NPC offers a quest every time you speak to them. Availability can depend on earlier quests, story progress, time of day, an item in your inventory, or a specific action.

When you enter a new settlement, make a deliberate circuit rather than relying on the map icon. Talk to each named person, enter buildings, and note where the character stands. Some triggers use a person’s home or workplace, so finding the right character in the wrong location may not start the entry.

3. Record the trigger, not just the title

A useful checklist has at least these fields:

  • Quest title
  • Quest giver and starting location
  • Prerequisite quest or story milestone
  • Time-of-day or schedule restriction
  • Requested item, number, or action
  • Destination and completion condition
  • Adventure Log status

Writing down the trigger means you can return later with a purpose instead of repeatedly talking to every NPC. Copy the wording of an objective as closely as possible. “Collect seven,” “deliver to a named person,” and “perform an action, then return” are different requirements even when they occur in the same area.

4. Re-sweep after progression

After completing a major Main Quest, opening a new area, or finishing a nearby Side Quest chain, repeat the conversations in that region. A previously silent NPC may now have a new entry, and a chain may expose its next step only after the preceding step is complete.

You do not have to restart the whole game to perform this check. Revisit the regions in which you just changed something, then use the Adventure Log to identify newly discovered entries. If a regional list still shows an undiscovered quest, carry its exact condition forward to your next suitable visit.

Why a quest may not appear

Most “missing quest” problems are availability conditions rather than errors. Check these gates in order.

Earlier Side Quests

Some quests are links in a short chain. The catalogue lists By Firefly’s Light as requiring both Find the Fairy Fountain and Flown the Coop. If either prerequisite is unfinished, the later conversation will not produce the expected entry.

Piggyback describes Koko’s sequence as four connected steps: Koko’s Kitchen, Cooking with Koko, Koko Cuisine, and Koko’s Specialty. Work through the chain in order; the later requests depend on what happened earlier. Record each step as its own entry rather than treating the four titles as one quest.

Main Quest progress

Some Side Quests wait for a story milestone. Piggyback’s example for Arrows of Burning Heat requires completing Seek Out Impa before speaking to Rola. If the quest giver has no relevant dialogue, verify that milestone before searching elsewhere.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Time of day

NPC schedules can be part of the trigger. Piggyback says Playtime with Cottla is triggered by speaking with Cottla between noon and 4 p.m. The By Firefly’s Light example requires visiting Lasli at home from 10 p.m. onward, in addition to its prerequisite quests.

When a guide gives a time window, use the game’s clock or a campfire to reach that period, then speak to the NPC at the stated location. Arriving at the right person at the wrong hour can look exactly like a missing prerequisite. If the character follows a schedule, wait until the person is actually in the specified building instead of speaking to them elsewhere.

Requested items

Other entries are gated by an item or require a precise delivery. Keep the requested ingredients, materials, or equipment available until the Adventure Log marks the objective complete. Piggyback’s examples include specific ingredients and materials rather than generic “bring supplies” instructions.

Read the item wording carefully and check quantities. If an objective names an ingredient, a similar-looking material will not satisfy it. Do not discard or sell a requested item until the log changes to the next objective.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Required action

Some objectives are actions, not conversations. Piggyback’s Flown the Coop example directs Link to return seven cuccos to their enclosure. If you only talk to the quest giver and leave, the entry remains unfinished. Count the requested targets, perform the action at the stated place, and then return if the objective calls for a final conversation.

Using the Adventure Log as your master checklist

Nintendo’s player guidance says to open the Adventure Log with the + Button to check what to do next. Use that screen after every discovery and completion rather than relying on memory.

  1. Press the + Button to open the Adventure Log.
  2. Open the Side Quest section. The Zelda Dungeon Wiki identifies Side Quests as the third Adventure Log tab; treat the in-game entries, not a website’s numbering, as the authority for your save.
  3. Read the selected quest’s current objective and location.
  4. Sort your external checklist into discovered, completed, and waiting-for-prerequisite entries.
  5. When an objective changes, update your notes immediately so a chain’s next step is not overlooked.

The Adventure Log is also useful for scope control. A website may include a Shrine Quest or an untracked activity in a regional walkthrough, but it should not be counted as a Side Quest unless it appears in the Side Quest section or the guide explicitly classifies it that way. Zelda Dungeon also notes that some extras are not listed in the Adventure Log, so absence from the log does not make every optional activity a missing Side Quest.

A low-spoiler method

If you want discovery without reading full solutions, use a source that exposes only the starting information. Zelda Dungeon’s catalogue offers an interactive-map view with quest-start details and location objectives on tooltips, while its linked walkthroughs reveal more complete solutions. Begin with the map view, then open a full walkthrough only when a prerequisite, route, or objective is unclear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical spoiler ladder is:

  1. Minimal spoiler: look up only the region and quest-giver location.
  2. Trigger help: reveal the prerequisite, time window, or required item.
  3. Objective help: reveal the destination and action without reading the full solution.
  4. Full walkthrough: use every step when a chain or puzzle is blocking completion.

This approach keeps the act of finding NPCs and solving objectives intact while still preventing schedule and progression gates from wasting time. If you are playing with a child or introducing someone to the game, the tooltip-level map is usually enough to guide the next conversation without exposing an entire solution.

How to audit all regions without losing track

Use a separate page or spreadsheet section for each regional heading in your chosen catalogue. Copy the quest title and add the trigger fields described above. Then follow the same loop in every region.

Town and stable pass

  1. Speak with every named resident at the relevant time of day.
  2. Enter houses, shops, inns, and work areas.
  3. Check the stable staff and nearby travelers.
  4. Record any quest that appears in the Adventure Log before leaving.

Progression pass

  1. Compare each undiscovered entry with its listed prerequisite.
  2. Complete prerequisite Side Quests first.
  3. Check required Main Quest milestones.
  4. Return during the specified schedule window.
  5. Carry the requested items and perform the stated action.

Completion pass

  1. Read the final objective in the Adventure Log.
  2. Confirm that the entry is marked complete rather than merely active.
  3. Remove it from your “to find” list only after that status change.

When a regional list says a quest exists but your log does not, leave it in a waiting column with the exact missing condition. That is more useful than treating it as absent. Add a note about the source and scope beside unusual entries so you remember why your total differs from another player’s total.

Base game or DLC? Set the scope first

Before counting, write one line at the top of your checklist: Base game only or Base game plus DLC. Zelda Dungeon’s catalogue reports 14 additional Side Quests from downloadable content: 13 supplied by the paid Expansion Pass and one free quest tied to the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 crossover.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

That produces two practical targets:

  • Base-game audit: compare your log against the 76-quest catalogue count, while remembering that the Zelda Dungeon Wiki reports 77.
  • Expanded audit: complete the base-game sweep, then add the 14 DLC entries covered by the catalogue.

Do not silently combine the DLC entries with the base-game number. A checklist that says “90” without explaining its scope can be impossible to reconcile with a guide using 76 or 77. Keep a separate DLC column, and mark the free crossover entry separately from the 13 Expansion Pass entries if that distinction matters to your collection.

Choosing between published checklists

The two detailed guide formats described in the available sources serve different needs.

Feature Zelda Dungeon catalogue Piggyback guide
Base-game count 76 76
Organization Regional catalogue Regional Side Quests chapter
Maps Interactive map and quest-location information Maps of quest givers and destinations
Quest detail Individual walkthroughs linked from entries Quest instructions and regional explanations
Spoiler control Map tooltips can limit information; full walkthroughs reveal more Uses guidebook maps and walkthrough text
Counting caveat Catalogue uses 76; its associated wiki reports 77 Uses 76

Use the catalogue when you want a searchable, location-first sweep and adjustable spoiler exposure. Use the regional guide format when you prefer a single structured reference with maps. Whichever you choose, transfer unresolved prerequisites and timing conditions into your own checklist and verify completion in the Adventure Log.

A physical Piggyback guidebook is an optional purchase, not a requirement. Its publisher says the Side Quests chapter covers all 76 quests with regional maps. Online catalogues and maps provide free alternatives; if you buy a book, check the current edition, stock, destination marketplace, and whether its coverage matches your DLC scope. Do not assume an older or different-platform listing uses the same count.

What to do when your checklist and log disagree

The guide lists a quest, but the log does not

Check whether the entry is a Shrine Quest, Main Quest, DLC quest, or an untracked activity. If it is a Side Quest, test its prerequisite, story milestone, time window, location, item requirement, and action in that order.

The log has a quest, but the guide does not

Check the guide’s scope and edition. It may use the 76-count catalogue while your source includes a differently classified entry, or it may omit DLC. Keep the in-game entry on your personal list regardless of the published numbering.

The NPC has no dialogue

Leave the area, advance the time, finish the prerequisite, and return to the NPC’s stated location. For scheduled characters, being near the correct building is not enough if the character is elsewhere at that hour.

The objective seems complete, but the quest remains active

Read the exact objective again. A delivery may require a particular recipient, a collection may require a specific number, and an action objective may require returning to the quest giver afterward. The cucco example requires seven birds returned to their enclosure, not merely found.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You finished the quest but cannot find it in a guide

Record the exact title from your Adventure Log and compare the guide’s regional and DLC scope. A title may be grouped differently, or a community list may use the alternate 77-quest count. Do not delete a completed entry just because its numbering differs.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find every Side Quest in Breath of the Wild?

Choose a regional checklist, search towns, stables, houses, and named NPCs, and record each quest’s giver and trigger. Revisit regions after story milestones, then confirm every discovery and completion in the Adventure Log.

Which Side Quest am I missing?

Compare your Adventure Log with a region-indexed list and inspect entries marked unavailable. Check prerequisite quests, Main Quest milestones, time windows, NPC locations, requested items, and required actions before assuming the quest is absent.

Are there 76 or 77 Side Quests?

Zelda Dungeon’s catalogue and Piggyback each state 76 base-game Side Quests, while the Zelda Dungeon Wiki lists 77. The counting difference is unresolved, so use the entries in your own Adventure Log as the authority for your save.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How many Side Quests does the DLC add?

Zelda Dungeon’s catalogue lists 14 additional DLC Side Quests: 13 from the paid Expansion Pass and one free Xenoblade Chronicles 2 crossover quest.

Is a Shrine Quest the same as a Side Quest?

No. Shrine Quests and Main Quests are separate categories. Keep them on separate lists unless a guide explicitly classifies an entry as a Side Quest.

Why is an NPC not giving me a quest?

The quest may require an earlier Side Quest, a story milestone, a particular time, a specific location, an item, or an action. Test those conditions in that order and return to the NPC at the stated time and place.

Do I need to buy a guidebook?

No. The Zelda Dungeon catalogue and interactive map provide online alternatives. Piggyback’s physical guide is optional; verify the current edition, availability, and DLC coverage if you purchase it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

For a complete, low-frustration sweep, audit one region at a time, write every prerequisite and schedule beside the quest title, and revisit NPCs after progress changes. Keep base-game and DLC counts separate, treat the 76-versus-77 disagreement as a cataloguing difference, and let the Adventure Log decide what your save has actually discovered and completed.
