You can still find an entry-level technology job in Texas during a slower hiring period, but a single search for “tech jobs” is unlikely to work. Use WorkInTexas, employer career sites, and a local Workforce Solutions office together; test several role titles; compare each live posting with Texas wage and projection data; and choose training only to close a requirement that employers actually list.
Texas employment data show a mixed market rather than a complete shutdown. Statewide figures include every industry, while occupation projections cover longer periods and do not identify which openings are entry level. Treat the numbers as context, then let current postings in your metro area determine your next move.
What a slower Texas hiring market actually looks like
The latest statewide indicators point in different directions. The Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) Labor Market and Career Information dashboard displayed 14,469,300 nonfarm jobs and a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 4.4% for August 2026. TWC’s August 21, 2026 release reported 1,600 jobs added in July and 165,600 jobs added over the preceding year. Those totals include health care, government, construction, retail, and every other major industry, so they are not a count of entry-level technology vacancies.

|---|---|---|
| Texas nonfarm employment | 14,469,300, August 2026 | Broad statewide employment level; not a technology-opening count. |
| Seasonally adjusted unemployment | 4.4%, August 2026 | Shows the statewide labor market, not your odds for a particular occupation. |
| Monthly job change | +1,600 in July 2026 | A short-term change across all nonfarm industries. |
| Year-over-year job change | +165,600 through July 2026 | Indicates continued overall growth despite uneven industries. |
| Information industry | -10,900 jobs, or -4.9%, year over year through July 2026 | A warning that some technology-adjacent employers may be reducing headcount; it does not measure every technology role. |
| Professional and Business Services | +67,000 jobs, or +3.2%, year over year through July 2026 | Growth in a broad sector that includes many technical employers, but not a guarantee of entry-level openings. |
| Statewide job openings | 575,000 in June 2025 | A lagged, all-industry JOLTS observation useful for understanding cooling demand. |
| Previous openings peak | 1,096,000 in April 2022 | Shows how far openings had fallen from the post-pandemic peak. |
| Openings rate | 3.9% in June 2025, versus 7.6% in April 2022 | Another measure of reduced vacancy intensity; the report is not current to August 2026. |
| Openings compared with hires | Openings exceeded hires by 40,000 in June 2025; openings had exceeded hires every month since September 2024 | Suggests unfilled demand remained, even as the level of openings cooled. |
The openings figures come from TWC’s Texas Workforce Report and end in June 2025, while the employment dashboard and release are from 2026. Keep those dates attached to the numbers. None of these measures isolates new graduates, career changers, remote positions, or entry-level postings.

Are Texas technology companies still hiring?
Some are, but hiring is selective and uneven by employer, location, and role. The decline in the Information industry through July 2026 is not proof that every technology employer has stopped hiring; the increase in Professional and Business Services is not proof that every technical vacancy is expanding. A practical answer to “Are Texas tech companies still hiring?” is to check active requisitions in your target metro and verify that each one is still open on the employer’s own site.
Use statewide data to decide whether to broaden your search, not to predict one application. If your city has few software-development ads, include internal IT, computer support, systems administration, implementation, and technical operations titles. If support roles require experience you do not have, look for internships, apprenticeships, contract-to-hire positions, campus technology jobs, or customer-facing roles that list troubleshooting as a core duty. Apply only when the posting’s requirements and work arrangement fit your circumstances.
Role families worth testing
TWC’s Report on Texas Growth Occupations 2025 identifies software developers and computer user support specialists among occupations projected to add jobs in Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services. The figures below are occupation-wide estimates for that industry table, not promises of an entry-level offer.
| Occupation | Average employment 2022 | Projected employment 2032 | Change, 2022–2032 | 2024 annual median wage in the industry table | What to verify in live ads |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Software developers | 45,657 | 75,319 | +29,662, or 65.0% | $127,598 | Language and framework requirements, portfolio expectations, degree or experience screens, location, and whether the posting is genuinely junior. |
| Computer user support specialists | 20,701 | 30,726 | +10,025, or 48.4% | $57,270 | Ticketing systems, operating systems, networking basics, customer-service skills, shift coverage, certifications, and prior support experience. |
The wage figures are 2024 annual medians for all workers in the occupation within the cited industry table, not starting salaries. A projection from 2022 to 2032 describes a longer-term change and does not mean a vacancy is open today.
“While this report shows the most in-demand occupations in Texas for the 2022 through 2032 period, it is important to remember that each employer needs a unique combination of technical skills, education, work experience, and even soft skills for each of these jobs at each of their workplaces.”

Use those role labels as a search experiment, not as a guaranteed ladder. Search several related titles and let the actual requirements tell you which family is reachable now.
A practical Texas search plan
1. Build a broad search in WorkInTexas
WorkInTexas.com is TWC’s online job-matching and workforce-services system. The Texas Economic Development and Tourism Office says it provides job postings, résumé functions, state applications, and education and training discovery.
- Create or update your profile and résumé so your location, work authorization, education, availability, and transferable skills are accurate.
- Run separate searches for titles such as
help desk technician, service desk analyst, computer user support specialist,IT support technician, technical support representative, junior software developer,QA analyst, andsystems support. Employers use different labels for similar work. - Set geography to a commute you can sustain. Run another search for remote or hybrid work only if you meet the posting’s residency and schedule rules; “remote” does not always mean “anywhere in Texas.”
- Save searches and revisit them. A single results page is a snapshot, not the whole market.
- Read the full posting before applying. Record required experience, education, certifications, tools, shift, pay information if supplied, and closing date.
Use the résumé tools as a way to organize evidence, not as a substitute for tailoring. Put the same terms that accurately describe your experience in a skills section and in examples of work you completed.
2. Verify the opening on the employer’s career site
Public job boards can be delayed, duplicated, or missing a hiring freeze. After finding an employer through WorkInTexas or another public listing, search the employer’s own careers page for the requisition number or exact title. Check the posting date, status, location, and application instructions before spending time on an application.
State agencies and public universities often require a specific form. TWC states that a résumé does not substitute for a required State of Texas Application. Follow the agency’s instructions exactly, attach documents in the requested format, and answer supplemental questions with examples rather than referring the reviewer back to your résumé.
3. Get free help from a local Workforce Solutions office
Texas has 28 locally managed workforce development boards that coordinate with TWC and operate Workforce Solutions offices. The state says job seekers can receive help with training and finding a job at no cost. TWC’s Jobs page also links to the American Job Center directory.

Ask the office serving your county or workforce area about résumé review, interview practice, occupational assessment, job-search workshops, supportive services, and eligibility for funded training. Bring a current résumé, a list of target titles, your weekly availability, and the postings that interest you. A staff member can help you distinguish a missing skill from a requirement that is merely preferred, but you still decide which roles to pursue.
4. Test demand in your own metro area
TWC’s labor-market information services include Texas LMI, Texas Labor Analysis, Texas Wages, employment projections, regional profiles, online postings, and Monthly Help Wanted Online. Texas Career Check supports career exploration. Use these tools to compare your county or metro area with another location before deciding that the whole state lacks opportunities.
- Count current postings for each target title in your realistic commuting area.
- Note how recently ads were posted and whether the same requisition appears on the employer’s site.
- List recurring tools and requirements across at least several current ads.
- Check local wage information and label it correctly: an occupational median is not an entry-level offer.
- Compare the local pattern with projections, remembering that a statewide forecast cannot replace an active local search.
5. Choose training to close a documented gap
TWC’s State Training Inventory collects information on Texas training providers and programs, including enrollment and graduation data where available. MyTXCareer can match occupations to your background and lets you request information about local training.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Start with a real requirement from several postings. For example, if support ads repeatedly ask for a ticketing system, basic networking, and a particular operating system, compare programs that teach those skills. Do not enroll solely because a course advertises a high-demand label.
For each program, record:
- Curriculum and whether it covers the tools named in your target ads.
- Total cost, payment schedule, materials, exam fees, and refund policy.
- Schedule, delivery format, location, and expected study hours.
- Eligibility for public funding or local workforce assistance.
- Completion, enrollment, and graduation information available through the inventory.
- How the provider defines employment outcomes and whether those outcomes can be verified.
The public sources establish ways to discover and compare programs; they do not establish that a particular paid credential is necessary for every Texas technology job.
6. Track applications so you can see the pattern
Use a spreadsheet or notes file with columns for title, employer, location, source, date found, closing date, required skills, your evidence, application date, response, and next action. This is a personal organization method, not a guarantee of more interviews.

After several applications, review the evidence. If you are rejected before a conversation and lack a repeated requirement, adjust your résumé or training plan. If you receive interviews but no offers, practice explaining troubleshooting decisions, customer communication, projects, and situations in which you learned an unfamiliar tool. If many ads disappear before you apply, increase the frequency of your searches and verify openings directly on employer sites.

Hiring conditions and requisitions change faster than a ten-year projection. Keep a primary target and one or two adjacent families. For example, pair junior development with QA or application support; pair help desk with desktop support, field support, or technical customer service. Expand geography only as far as your commute, relocation budget, or remote-work eligibility allows.
Turn role names into a repeatable search experiment
Search strings should reflect how employers write ads, not how one résumé describes your goal. Run the same set of searches weekly and record what changes.
| Search family | Example titles to test | Questions to ask before applying |
|---|---|---|
| User and IT support | Help desk technician; service desk analyst; computer user support specialist; desktop support; IT support technician | Is prior ticketing or customer-support experience required? Are nights, weekends, or on-call shifts part of the schedule? Which operating systems, devices, and network tasks appear repeatedly? |
| Software and applications | Junior software developer; application support analyst; QA analyst; test technician; implementation specialist | Is the role labeled junior but asking for several years of production experience? Which languages, databases, testing tools, or client-facing skills recur? |
| Technical operations | Systems support; NOC technician; data-center technician; technical operations associate | Does the schedule include rotating shifts? Are hardware handling, monitoring, Linux or Windows administration, or security procedures required? |
| Technology-enabled customer work | Technical customer support; product support specialist; onboarding specialist | Is troubleshooting central to the job? Does the employer provide product training, and are communication or sales targets part of the role? |
For every ad, check six items: required versus preferred experience; education or certification; tools and skills; schedule; work location; and whether the employer gives a salary range or advancement information. A title that sounds beginner-friendly can still screen for prior experience, while a less obvious title may provide a realistic first step.
Compare software development, support, and other paths before committing
No statewide tool ranks the best path for every person. Make the decision with the same criteria for each role family.
| Comparison axis | What to measure | Why it matters during a slowdown |
|---|---|---|
| Local openings | Number, freshness, and employer diversity of postings in your workforce area | A projection cannot help if there are few current requisitions you can reach. |
| Entry requirements | Years of experience, education, certifications, portfolio, background checks, and work authorization | Separates genuinely accessible roles from ads using “junior” as a title only. |
| Recurring skills | Tools and tasks appearing across several live ads | Shows which skills are worth practicing or demonstrating first. |
| Training burden | Time, total cost, schedule, eligibility, and opportunity cost | Prevents an expensive course from becoming a substitute for targeted evidence. |
| Work arrangement | Commute, relocation, remote eligibility, shifts, on-call duties, and travel | A technically suitable job is not practical if the schedule or location is impossible. |
| Pay information | Advertised range where available, plus local occupational wage data | Keeps occupation-wide medians from being mistaken for a starting offer. |
| Training-provider transparency | Curriculum, eligibility, outcomes, completion data, and verifiable employer connections | Lets you judge a program on evidence rather than marketing language. |
Make an entry-level application credible
Selective hiring increases the value of specific evidence. Your application should let a recruiter see what you can do without assuming that a course title proves competence.

- 【No Drill Mounted】Cable management tray can be assembled in as little as 3 minutes or less-simply. Side clips easily clampe the edge of desk, pass through the holes on the sides, and secure excess cables with baskets. Desk cable management supports inward or outward installation to meet your needs in different scenarios, and provides you with great convenience when collecting and organizing wires.
- 【Rubber Pad Protects Desk】Wire organizer under desk built-in soft rubber pads on the clamp protect your desk from scratches, so you will not damage your furniture or office.
- 【Sturdy and Beautiful】Cord management under desk is made of high-quality carbon steel and holds about 15 lbs. The wire basket has 2 holes on each side of the tray to enable your cables to pass freely. Cable baskets are suitable for desk thickness use from 0.4" to 2.4".
- 【Space Saving & Keep Organized】Desk cable management tray holds all your power cords, outlet strips, USB hubs and computer transformers hidden from your feet, and the data cables will not enter the vacuum cleaner to keep your desk clean and tidy. Desk wire organizer is also suitable for use in the kitchen and outdoors.
- 【Reduce Safety Risks】Cable tray under desk keeps all plugs away from your kids, no more worry about tripping. Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.
- Translate experience into tasks. Retail, campus, volunteer, laboratory, warehouse, and administrative work can demonstrate troubleshooting, documentation, customer communication, process discipline, or data handling when you describe the action and result accurately.
- Show a small, relevant work sample. A support candidate might document a mock ticket workflow, device setup, or troubleshooting guide. A development candidate might explain a small application, tests, version-control workflow, and the decisions made. Label personal work honestly.
- Mirror the posting’s vocabulary only when it is true. If an ad asks for a ticketing platform you have not used, do not claim it. Describe comparable systems and explain how you learned them.
- Make logistics explicit. State your city, willingness to commute or relocate, work authorization, availability for listed shifts, and remote-work constraints.
- Prepare concise stories. Be ready to describe a problem, the information you gathered, the steps you took, the result, and what you would change next time.
- Follow every application’s instructions. A complete State of Texas Application, supplemental response, or work sample can matter more than an attractive résumé that omits required fields.
What to do when the search stalls
You find very few postings
Check whether the issue is the title, geography, or timing. Add adjacent titles, search nearby workforce areas, inspect employer sites directly, and use Monthly Help Wanted Online and regional profiles. Do not infer that Texas has no technology hiring from one empty search.
You see postings but fail automated screens
Compare your résumé with the required qualifications, not every preferred qualification. Correctly include matching tools, job titles, and outcomes; remove generic skill lists that you cannot support. If a required credential is genuinely missing across many ads, ask a Workforce Solutions office whether an eligible training option exists before paying for one.
You receive interviews but no offers
Ask yourself whether you can explain the technical basics, customer impact, schedule fit, and examples of learning. Practice with a local workforce office, then revise one weak answer at a time. Keep applying to roles whose requirements you meet rather than moving automatically to a more advanced title.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →A posting asks for “entry level” and several years of experience
Treat the requirements as a screening signal. Apply if you can demonstrate equivalent work and the employer describes flexibility; otherwise, search the same organization for support, implementation, trainee, internship, or contract roles. Never misstate years of experience.
You are considering a paid boot camp or certification
Pause and compare the program with current ads and the State Training Inventory. Calculate the full cost and schedule, verify eligibility and outcome definitions, and ask a Workforce Solutions counselor about public assistance. A paid credential is one option, not a universal prerequisite established by the state data.
How to keep your information current
The evidence behind this guide spans different periods: August 2026 dashboard values, a July 2026 employment release, a workforce report whose JOLTS discussion ends in June 2025, and occupation projections for 2022–2032 published in 2025. Before making a major relocation, borrowing, or training decision, refresh local postings, wages, and monthly employment information. Record the date you checked each source so you do not treat an old vacancy or projection as a current promise.
Bottom line
Finding an entry-level tech job in Texas during a slowdown is a process of narrowing uncertainty. Start with WorkInTexas and employer sites, use free local workforce help, measure demand in your own commuting area, and compare several role families against the requirements in live ads. TWC’s projections show longer-term opportunity for software developers and computer user support specialists, but they do not guarantee an opening or an entry-level wage today. Let current evidence, targeted skill-building, and a disciplined application log determine where you invest your time and money.
